Hiya.. am thinking of getting the Ixus 800IS as well. Cos we are expecting our kid soon and it would be great to have a camera like the 800IS with you when you need it and to capture those precious moments.

However, although being a Canon supporter, I am pondering for compactness and image quality, how does the 800IS measure to the Nikon S3 or the Casios?

Hope someone can give me some insights??

There is no comparson to Nikon, I am afraid. Casio is a different animal altogether.

www.dcresource.com is a good place to do comparison of the cams you are interested in.

S3 has good image quality. It's not as good as the 800IS in other ways. quoted from www.dcresource.com Camera performance was average in most areas, with decent but unremarkable startup, focus, and shutter lag numbers. Shot-to-shot speeds, battery life, and the P3's continuous shooting mode were average as well. While the camera has an AF-assist lamp, I was frustrated with the difficulties I had getting the camera to focus in low light situations.

Thanks Mpenza and Felixcat for your feedbacks.

Mpenza, so from that statment above, I reckon you own a S3 huh... Do you guys know how well the 800IS performs in a night-indoor environment? I know inevitabily, you may get the darken round edges with Flash but how does the 800IS handles low-lighting condition esp in the scenario I sited? How about low-lighting outdorr scenes?

I also read that someone commented that there is no AV function but its a PnS camera so its not expected of the 800IS to have this feature as well correct?

Since Mpenza pen me your feedback on the S3, I would probably give it a miss... the other interesting model is the Z600 from Casio.. Well, I reckon the Casios uses s/w stability more than lens stability.. am I right? Would wonder how is this compared with the 800IS though... Will do my research as well but I really appreciate your comments. :) Thanks

low light AF of the Ixus 800 is pretty good, and to add to that, I shoot without the AF assist on as I find it too distracting.

Ricleo,

Thanks for your comments.

Do you have anything or hear anything on the Casio Z600?

Think I got the wrong model... I was looking at the review of P3, a higher end model.

Casio doesn't have anu stabilisation. Their anti-shake works by boosting the sensitivity of the sensor to ISO1600. 800IS has real mechanical stabilisation built into the lens.

I just noticed that my Ixus 800IS produces this dark edge at the bottom-right corner. I took many different photos but it appears in all the photos. Is it a defect or something I have to live with? :dunno:

was this taken at the tele end or wide end?

Yikes...the vignetting looks quite bad...does this happen to all ixus800?

Hmm, I'm not surprised to see the darkening but certainly surprised at the severity. What are your settings? I did wide angle shots with flash and got darkening too but not as severe as yours.

Didn't bother to do detailed tests on this cam as it's just a "fun" cam to me. For all other general situations, the cam has served me well.

Read my other post in this same forum:

"saxo74,

The darkening of the 4 sides with flash light happens to IXUS800 also. I think it's the lack of flash power or whatever. I'm quite surprised when I saw it. But have to remind myself it's a "toy/fun" camera. Can't expect too much. There is also quite a bit of barrel distortion at the wide end.

But image quality wise, I really have no complaints. I bought and love it more than other brands. Other than size/weight, IS and extra zoom, everything else on the 60 should be the same as the 800."

the ixus i had experienced slight vignetting at the corners as well, but i've never shot at a white wall using the flash before, so have never experienced something the results you got before.

Did you use the flash in full auto + red eye reduction with the preflash function? Maybe the camera cut power to the flash when the exposure from the preflash was overexposed (due to the effect of the white wall), causing a more severe than usual vignetting.

Note that the flash is on the top left corner of the camera, very close to the lens assembly, hence the effect of the vignetting when using flash can be expected to be stronger on the botton right part of the image due to the shadow cast by the flash assembly.

Anyone care to post some flash pics taken with the ixus800? Just like to see how's the vignetting issue with some real world pics.

Was considering getting this cam.:)

vignetting in real world flash pics is really quite unnoticable, unless you have a subject (like a wall) which covers the whole of your image. All my flash shots involves shots of me and my friends, hence it's not really convenient for me to post those.

When I experience vignetting, it's usually those shots I take which involve big skies in landscape shots.

Hi, I read on dpreview that the sharpness settings of the camera should be tweaked so that the images don't look so blur. Does anyone know how to do this?

Hey guys,

Where & what's the best price/package for this Canon Ixus 800IS?

newkidontheblk: at least your dark edges look more balanced than mine!

anyway, I have checked with Canon, and they give me the (lame) reason that the flash is too near, etc. Reasons I don't really accept since my previous Ixus did not give me such a problem. Now new Ixus, worse than the previous? Why the design flaw? Since he say it's not hardware problem, I complain complain also no use, right? Their attitude is that there is nothing they can do, I just have to live with this. ok LOR.

GOT MY BRAND NEW TOY!!!

Enjoying it and I was testing about the camera's vignetting.. apparently its not as bad as the image posted.

Like the compactness, and speed of the camera on top of the image quality.. really like it alot.

I have a question on the SD card though.

Was thinking of getting a 1GB 120x speed SD card, however, I am unsure if it will really benefit in terms of speed performance and battery performance.
Well, for a DSLR it would benefit the speed but the IXUS being a consumer camera, may not respond to a faster speed card as the bottle neck might be at the processor and interface.

For example if you have a DDRII RAM 677MHz pluged into a mother-board with RAM interface speed of max 533MHz, the RAM 677MHz will be clocked down to 533MHz.

The 1GB 120x speed SD card is 2x the price of a 2GB normal speed SD, approximately SGD84.
SO basically I am asking to check if anybody KNOWS the technical setup or may have tested a 120x speed versus a normal on the Ixus 800IS. Cos don't want to spend 2x the price for the speed if I am not gona reap the returns of the investment. ;P If its pointless, then I might as well get a 2nd Battery correct? :)

Hope someone can shed some light. I've also post this question to Canon technical team as well. :)
