It's here! Olympus E-P1 "Digital Pen" m43 system

Has anyone noticed that even though the G1/GH1 and E-P1 all subscribe to the m43 standards, the way they cope with legacy Four Thirds lenses is different.

The G1/GH1 can only autofocus with Panasonic's own Four-Thirds lenses and only with the newer Olympus Four Thirds lenses that are designed for contrast detection AF. With the older Olympus ZD lenses, only manual focus is possible.

See their compatibility list here:
http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/connect/g1.html

The E-P1 on the other hand can autofocus with every ZD lens, new or old, that I have and tried. It would a bit slower in autofocusing with the older ZD lenses that are not designed for CDAF but will at least still do so.

I am wondering whether this is achieved by the firmware/hardware in the camera body or in the MMF-1 adapter.

Thanks for pointing that out, as I was thinking of the DMW-MA1 adapter.

Notice that quite a few (at least 3) E-P1 users are already selling their E-P1 on the B&S section. Is there any problem with this camera?

Confirm not because of the MMF-1, because I am using the Panasonic adapter and I am still able to auto focus with 50mm f2..

I don't think it's the camera. I saw a lot of LX3 in B/S section too. I think it's because of the BBB syndrome and after trying out, the users probably find it's not really what they wanted so it ended up in B/S. E-P1 is serious poison. Must control :bsmilie:

Thanks bro, for the info. I personally think, besides the cheaper price, it goes better with the black Oly 4/3 lenses.

how much cheaper is the pana adapter? i understand the oly one goes for 248-260?

oso, still possible for the 14-35 or 12-60 to be upgraded in the future (via firmware or whatever) to use contrast detect AF? or maybe they'll come up with mk2 versions for those

i certainly hope so, those two lenses are interesting

I don't know the price of the Oly adapter, is it more ex than the Pana one?
I agree that the Pana one goes better with black lens
:)

The FL-36 is not very heavy but it would definitely be more top heavy than the FL-14 which is designed for the E-P1. For me, it is still acceptable as I already have one and am only using it when absolutely necessary.

An alternative flash to the FL-14 is the DWM-FL220 from Panasonic for the G1/GH1. It can bounce... the swivel-head mount allows for 60 degrees of up/down and 78 degrees of right/left movement. ;)

Hi, i check with cathy photo the flash is $299 and cannot bounce.

If you shoot with an Four-Thirds macro lens eg the ZD 50mm f/2.0 Macro, ZD 35mm f/3.5 Macro, Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX, Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX... then very good ! As good as with Olympus DSLRs ;)

Thanks tomcat. By the way, I noticed you do IR photography, too. Is that possible with the E-P1? Have you tried?

Don't know why so many sites say can swivel and bounce:

:dunno:
Would have to physical check a unit out to see if it can or cannot bounce.
Anyway, it is expected that Panasonic flashes and accessories would be more expensive than those of Olympus. It has always been so.

there is definitely nothing wrong with this camera.. :)

maybe some users are expecting more from the e-p1..
eg. high res lcd, fast af, smooth continuous af etc etc etc..

or simply... just BBB poison

Well, maybe a bit cheaper. :bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie:

DMW-MA1

Not sure if can use it for updating 4/3 lenses but I don't see why not if Pana uses the same way to update their products. Doesn't matter to me as I already have a 4/3 system. And yes, the 12-60 is a good piece of glass.

If you really want cheap, then get the third party adapter from Chiif... $100 only ;)

I'll be very surprised if the Panasonic version is cheaper than the Olympus one as all their equivalent accesories have been more expensive.

i think maybe only can turn left and right. if you shot vertical, turn to left/right to bounce...just a guess

just a note, the viewfinder tat olympus gives, it's not very good comparing to my ricoh gv2 and some voigtlander ones.

the frame lines are much dimmer and slighty distorted and dim. not a deal breaker, but thought some might like to know.

if i were to use, i would use my ricoh gv2, though it's 28mm..

Which size of viewfinder would you recommend for the E-P1?

I think the M43 to 43 adapter from Chiff has no electronic contacts.

Actually the Pana M43 45-200mm f/4.0-5.6 is competitively priced. ;)

was at parisilk holland v.. they have the zoom lens and pancake kits available.. 3 each i think. no double kit though. not allowed to try also..

Since the E-P1 has shutter blades too, means the shutter lifespan will have to be taken into account like a dSLR.
