I agree, the whole idea of the micro four thirds is to make it as compact as possible, adding a grip defeats the purpose, besides, they said they will be making a tele lens, and Panasonic already has one

When you use a slightly longer lens with adaptor mount, holding the E-P1 may become uneasy. Why not make an optional E-Px grip that can convert the E-P1 to a dSLR frame. :bsmilie:

We did test e-p1 with 50-200 mm zuiko, and we are holding the lense rather than the body. Handling can be a bit tough if you need to zoom and doing manual focus. :bsmilie:

I think they made a version called the GH1 by sacrificing the IS in favor of a grip. heh. Hey it even has an LCD that swivels, and is branded Panasonic instead. How cool is that!

Seriously, tho, I don't think the E-P1 was designed with a handheld long lens shooter in mind. It's really more like a logical evolution of the E4xx bodies, and does wonders with shorter lenses.

I don't know man... I have stayed off DSLR (even the E4xx) because they are just too bulky. I own a few digital minicams since and use my Contax G2 for any serious endeavours. I wouldn't have considered the E4xx, was disappointed when the G1/GH1 surfaced but the E-P1 just clicks for me.

Evolution or revolution, E-P1 is what started me looking at more serious digital cams again. I'd get one today if its available already.

That's why. Imagine you take the standard E-P1 as it is on a normal light trip. And let say you have to a more important event so you required a bounce flash, a couple of medium lens.
Just slot the compact body into a custom EP grip (of course it has to be better colored and design), and there you go a dSLR. Take it out and you get back the compact

Maybe the grip can support dual battery to extend the power.

I don't get what you mean.If we take the E-P1 on a trip, than have to a more important event?

and having a grip still will never ever make the E-P1 a DSLR since there is no prism and no mirror

with the E-P1, Olympus can continue to brag about having the world's smallest DSLR, for QUITE SOME TIME;)

Technically, without the Single Reflex Mirror (SLR), it's not really a dSLR... That's what "powers" your OVF to begin with.

yup... technically not a 'slr'... erm.. how bout smallest digital interchangable lens camera?

yeah.. haha read it this morning... alot of pages... lots of menus... think it would be better if you had one to fool around with.. hehe..

Hmm...it seems Oly still hasn't adopted an Infolithium battery equivalent. Ah, well. No biggie, but it would've been a nice touch.

just now,i was thinking of not getting the E-P1 due to lack of a small "EVF",but now I want it again,I'm going bonkers in addition to being unable to sleep :D

It should be good, less shake, just like a Leica M rangefinder

They made a statement a long time ago with the small OM SLR :-)

True ... and for those of us who are used to small rangefinders and SLRs, like the Olympus OM, no problem without grips. These have optional grips, but I never bothered, they just make the camera bigger and bulkier, defeating the purpose. For my bigger cameras, I do prefer them to have some sort of grip, even if 3rd party.

Camera handling has always been "left hand balance, right hand fire". Traditionally, that is. The introduction of ergonomics for the right hand allowed a better grip for stability, but that does not mean that the right hand now grips the camera totally. Only scenario I see that the E-P1 has a disadvantage is where one wants to use wireless flash set up and have to try and balance with a 12-60 fitted with MMF-1 into the E-P1 and hand holding a FL-50R at the same time. That would be a tricky balancing act.

Otherwise, even when using a 35-100mm lens with the E-P1 via MMF-1, you still cradle the set up with your left hand (and finding the sweet spot to balance on your left hand) and shooting and controlling the camera with your right. That way has proven to eliminate shake since... long time ago...

I guess only with light lenses, or m43 lenses, that is where the E-P1 is a "one hand operation" set up.

Anyway, for a larger set up, I will go back to my E-3.

I'm curious,is Olympus working on a EVF for the E-P1 or going to work on 1?

I'm not sure if an EVF attachment would work on the EP-1. It would depend if the flash contacts allow for the info to be channeled, like how Ricoh does for the GX100.

I'm personally not a fan of EVFs, the technology is very much improved now (e.g. G1 over older Sonys) but the colors just don't look right. My only concern for an EVF would be if the LCD on the EP-1 makes it too hard to MF in low light. But I guess that would be a problem with an EVF as well since its also essentially a mini lcd? :P
