Hey guys, acrylonithrill's method WORKS (to a certain extent, worth experimenting). I tried it earlier, did not set CWB with that thing but used my regular R72 CWB. Results were reasonably ok.

Hope tomorrow's weather is good, I'll shoot some shots with CWB set with that thing and let you guys know.

vortex, ark19 I think this is a good temporary solution for you guys. Maybe if results are satisfactory, can forget about waiting for the arrival of the R72 :bsmilie:

Anyone has a spare of that thing and want to donate it. I don't have a spare, else I have no where to keep my filter if I use mine. :bsmilie:

Took some shots this morning with CWB set with the filter cap with the CP5700. Seem to get different results as I got yesterday. Set CWB in bright sunlight as well as overcast, but still not same. :dunno:

CWB set with the cap in bright sunlight on the CP5700 have a very green cast, in overcast a deep red cast. Maybe it's due to the light spectrum that the cap allows thru' to the camera's sensor which is of a different spectrum as the R72.

I think I'll try again with the D70.

Anyone of you guys going to try this out? Please post your findings.
Thanks

Is this bright enough for infrared?
Taken at 1/30s, ISO 100, F2.8

Thanks guys... There's 1000s of items that can experiment with... Never stop experimenting... btw, I'm overseas now... Coming back to singapore next year... till then see a date for an "unconventional-IR" shooting...

Sorry seeyf, can't see much of IR effect there. Care to share what you shot with and what is the object?

The websites on infrared mentioned taking a picture of a remote control to see if your camera is suitable for IR but did not mention how bright the picture must be.

So I want to know if my camera is suitable for taking IR pictures.

You don't need to take a picture of the remote control firing. As long as you can see the remote control bulb blinking in the LCD display, it means that the camera's CCD is sensitive enough to IR and there is a very good chance that the camera is suitable for IR photography.
What is the camera in question by the way?

OK. Thanks

Camera is Nikon Coolpix 8800.

Hi Seeyf,
I'd tried the R72 filter on a 8700 and the results was b/w photos.
If 8800 and 8700 is using similar ccd, most prob you can only obtain b/w IR photos.

Teerex,
I was searching thru the net for a IR solution and came upon an article
which states that a 2711 Deep Red acrylic is good for IR transmission. Woke up too late so can't check out the acrylic supplier.

Anyways, went to TK to buy a cheap 67mm filter to get the "ring", the salesperson managed to dig out an old filter and sold it to me for $5  Even took out the filter glass for me. And the gist of this story is, the filter container is the one that acrylonithrill is talking abt :)

I'm getting a dremel to cut the plastic cover to fit into the ring.

Vortex, the Hoya filter is a 67mm 85A ;)

ark19,
I was having the idea of looking for a piece of deep red acrylic plastic to work as an IR filter. Have been looking for some shops that makes plastic boxes or deals with plastic sheet to try to find one. Can you let me know if you find any acrylic supplier?

I think the 8700 and the 8800 uses the same CCD as the 5700. I also use the 5700 for IR and I can only get mono IR results as you have mentioned.

I'm not having satisfactory results with the filter container case as acrylonithril used. Perhaps now that you have it, you could try and see what results you get.

Thanks for you info.
Hoya 85A, it's a blue filter isn't it?

Hi Teerex,
seems we are all desperate for a little piece of semi-opaque glass call R72
I'll try to check out the acrylic. If it can be found, maybe offer it to the rest as a subsitute for R72

Hmm.. that Hoya 85A is a orange-brown colour. But can see that it's a very old filter. even had fungus on it  Anyway, won't be using the filter.

Try to cut it to size, but stopped as the small saw that I have can't cut in a circular path. Will try to buy a dremel later.

Notice that the center of the filter case has an artefact due to injection molding, so don't think it'll be good for shooting. But for temp solution.... will suffice i guess.

Hey guys... The acrylic board thing actually you can cut to your Cokin size or Lee size... But the prob is, how thick should the board be? 5mm, 3mm? Thicker or thiner?

Hi acrylonithrill,
the filter that I bought has a glass thickess of 2mm.

Tried local artshops but they either have opaque or transparent acrylic sheet.
Not common to have semi-opaque...

sungei rd those "5-Gold Shops" have or there's this Acrylic shop in an ulu ulu corner of Bras Basah, 2nd level just above the food court?

Buffing machine? To polish the edges of the plastic?
Actually a good sanding of the edges with wet abrasive paper should do the trick ;)

A dremel with polishing bit can also be used http://au.dremel.com/html/home_fr.html

Good to hear that you are in action already.
Do they have more of it ??.
This is a sq filter right, what size ?.

buffing machine to scrape off the low-pass filter :P

Hi IR guys,
Excuse the quality (camera sat on car roof at work)
Trying the EF 50mm 1.8 lens (MUCH lower exp time <2sec  )

13123IR.jpg

I might guess that with the other lens I used the hot spot is more prone
due to exp times of >8 sec :dunno:
