In the name of "Portfolio Building"

Not stopping people shooting free to get portfolios.

My advice for such case:

1. That newbie or whatever go shoot free, please do not give them any images, shoot is free but images must charge. Per image bridal shop is charging $80, so you can charge them the same rates.

2. List down the details in contract, failing to do so you may end up in bad situation.

3. Always ensure even shoot free, tell them a must to hire an make up artist, it helps. (Imaging shoot free for portfolios, but bad make up cannot produce good results).

4. Good to states the duration, you wanna wake up 2am for them??

5. Since it is free, and most likely no contract, you are entitled to shoot as you want, disappear as you want. If you think you have enough shots, wanna stop, please stop. Do not need to listen to them.

PLEASE REMEMBER SHOOT IS FREE BUT IMAGES IS NOT!!!

point no 5, should be modified to I shoot at my own 'FREE' time(since its gonna be free anyway) and FREE will and anything I wanna shoot...

I think can start a new website for freebies like Freesnap.com.sg for all new photographers who are dying to do for sake of exposure and doing free for clients. ;p

Lol. Freesnap, that's hilarious. Would make a great tongue-in-cheek site.

Something like 99designs for photography?

For those who haven't seen it, check out Jessica Hische's Should I Work for Free? chart for some helpful tips :p

Surprise no one see this way.

If you are there and do what you want and dont require to take anything unless u want, it's not a bad deal actually. Go and have a holiday and take a couple of shots for the couple and give them one or two shots in exchange may not be a bad deal.

But if you are there to take the shots and u are expected to perform, then this is bad.

Ok, joke aside, passion is only there is u are not hungry and have a nice warm bed to sleep on at night.

We like it or not, it does cost us some money to live.

Require more money if u want things beyond basic in life.

I do admire those could make a lost and still provide their service. Sadly, they probably don't know if they are making a lost.

That's the reason I started the free business talk to help people to understand.

My point is that, just because the guy / gal on the other site of the equation behaves in a certain unprofessional manner, it does not mean you have to do the same. Make a long "terms and conditions" for the service(s) you are providing, add remove terms and conditions as you go along and learn. If the client is not happy with your terms and conditions, just walk away and smile (because you know why you put every term and condition there, so don't fall into the trap of having to relearn an already learned lesson). If you go and shoot, stop, start, I tired, I not happy, I think I don't want to give you photos, etc then who knows what kind of unpleasant situations you may find yourself in, even if you are right (let alone having your name dragged here and there). Just my two cents.

Hmm then how about newbie photographer ask for free model(newbie too)?
will it be consider as taking advantage on model?

That becomes a TFCD, both parties contributes their efforts and talents on a collaborative creative effort/results.

The cheapos fishing for free shoots in the name of 'portfolio building' are people out to exploit photographers.

Recent cases on clubsnap were one Apple Ng trying to to get newbie to shoot her son birthday party in hdb flat, for 'portfolio and exposure' (portfolio of hdb aunties eating nasi lemak at home screaming at their kids?), Vietnamese couple come to Singapore for tour wanting photographer to shoot them for few days from day to night over a long list of locations, all in the name of giving photographers chance to build 'portfolio' and putting words like 'pre-wedding' to lure newbies. (Pre-wedding and wedding seems to be magic words that make newbies go crazy, most of the time they don't even have a wedding gown). Commercially there are car companys trying to get newbies to shoot cars at $3 per car plus on top of that the photographer still need to do data entry work. Many, many of these. And of course, the latest one is this thread, one Ms Joanne Chng wanting a photographer to shoot her holiday but she only willing to pay for air ticket - she is very heng her thread never ended up on HWZ like Apple Ng's thread... The crowd there don't pull punches.

If you don't respect yourself, these people won't respect you and they will keep coming and coming to try their luck. Maybe some even for amusement, just to see what they can get.

Anyway, if there's any desperate freebos "shooters" (sorry, you're are NOT FIT be be called a Photographer) who did responds to these bloody cheapos, congrats to them on digging their own grave. I would like to tell them, go burn in hell and don't spread the fire here.

These Cheapos asking for "free" shoot is a downgrade of oneself personality, but Freebos responding to the free/cheap calling are a disgrace to the whole community. :sticktong:sticktong:sticktong

In the very first place many camera toting 'so called photogs' claiming to be photogs want to capture images good enuf to be used in their portfolio to impress clients to earn big bucks and along the way need food in the stomach to provide energy otherwise brain malfunction and eyes go blurry, arms and legs go weak which in-turn make the images go unsharp and then blame it on every situation and everyone except hungry stomach for lack of food. Therefore my analysis, the above-mentioned photog will need to do for low low price for the main culprit aka food.

KXN.. if TS willing to pay, their first stop in cs should be here Photography Services Directory or Wedding Portfolios

If come across any cheapo thread like this, ask them to post their own pics here .... see worth doing it or not.

TFCD is a collaboration term for photographer and model to create portfolio.

IMO, if you are a newbie photographer, shouldn't go around offer TFCD in the first place, you should put efforts in your foundation of photography first, as TFCD you should provide results for yourself and the models.

TFCD is like a test, do you don't study the textbooks first and revise whatever you have learned before sitting for a test?

Can you be certain that you able to produce portfolio worth materials for yourself and the models at your current stage? If you can't, most likely you find very difficult to get decent models.

anyway, learning about shooting portrait, you can start with people around you, don't have to plan for a shoot, more like some impromptu takes, and you can do as many time as you can as long a camera is with you. and very easy to find subject to pose for you since not much stress to you and your subject.

hope this help.
