Impressions on the K100D

Hi
About the K100D's SR function, there is one issue mentioned in the manual.
If the lens used is not an "A lens or beyond", one needs to tell the camera the focal length through the menus.
Can anyone clarify what this means and how do I know what length to key in?
Thanks

BTW, in the quiet of the night, I took an image using auto mode and SR off . Noted the exposure time. Then I took it again with 3 times longer exposure time (picture was slightly blurred). Then I took the same shot again using SR on and the image looked much sharper and ........i heard the SR mechanism. came only at the point when I the picture is taken which means the SR does not work yet when shutter is half pressed.

But here is another interesting observation. The above was taken with auto ISO.
When I forced the ISO to 200, the image taken without SR is better than the one with SR although I ccould here the mechanism working.
Strange.

Pentax A lenses and later have electrical contacts at the lens mount. By this it is able to relay info to the camera on aperture and lens data. The reason why you would need to set lens focal length for the M lenses and older is because there is no electrical connection for the camera to determine what lens is attached. Presumably the SR is intelligent enough to vary when different focal length lenses are attached and but would require manual input for the old lenses.

the focal length that you are using to take the shot... the degree of compansation to correct shake is a function of how much you "zoomed".

maybe you wanna post some photos of your test shots? hmmm....strange, i also do not understand why for iso 200 image taken without SR is better...by right should be reducing the f stops by 1 or 2 and hence should be better....

Thanks...I would assume Sigma lenses are also good here? :)

yes... there should be an indicator (a line) to tell you the current focal length.

Hope I am not hijacking this thread.

I have just gotten the K100D after reading this thread and the many reviews on the internet! Thank you.

From a PnS camera --> S2 IS and now transitioning to DSLR, an a Pentax one, there's so much I need to learn from you guys.

Can I check how you guys protect the beautiful screen that K100D has?

And what flashes do you use with this K100D? Only the ones they mentioned on the reviews and Pentax sites?

You can juz go CP and buy the screen protector.

actually any screen protector will do! Buy one of the correct size and cut to desired dimensions.

Don't need a screen protector lah. I've been shooting with my D/Ds for more than 2 years, no problem with scratches. I even use my PDA (which has a 3.7" big screen) without any screen protector. Used to be a big fan of screen protector (and handphone/ipod skin cases), but nowadays I use them all barenaked :D

Any protector will degrade the wonderful LCD screen, just like using a cheap filter on an expensive lens :)

Greetings,

May I know where did you get the K100D and what is the price?

Thankx,
Way

:))

OK... maybe the screen should just go "naked".

I got this from Alan Photo and I have totally forgotten to ask about the flashes... How much does one cost anyway? How much did you pay for them?

'naked' is better ;)

The AF360 flash costs for around $250 to $300 but less than $200 on the second hand market. Don't know if the new 540 flash is available yet. That one will cost you probably at least $600. You can try some Sigma ones, which cost less and perform quite well.

There are a couple AF360 at yahoo auction right now. You might consider to give them a shot.

Good luck,

I bought mine at the recent comex.
The official price is $1269 and maybe a little cheaper if you buy from Alan Photo.
There is also a guy in the forum called TongEh who seems to be selling it for $1100 and if you top up another $100, he even throw in a Canon CP510 printer (normal $169).
