I'm a Minolta user. But I have to say the pentax had a fast auto focus. I was pretty impress with it. If I ever switch it may be a Pentax.

Ditto.

Never Nikon

That's a good review. Held the Pentax at Comex and almost put down money for it asthe price was quite attractive. Good features, esp the built in image stabilization but I felt there was a little shutter lag and the focusing was just a bit slower than Canon, which are minor points. While it is frankly a great camera that beats the likes of the D50, I feel Pentax is a little late in coming out with the K100D and playing catch-up as competitors have upped the ante with higher megapixels. Six megapixels may be more than what most hobbyists will probably need but in my opinion, if you need to do big time cropping, blow up for large format or want to sell your picture as commercial stock more megapixels are certainly welcome.

In built shake reduction is a good feature if super zoom lens (500mm) lens is used.....:)

mmm..I don't know why everyone wants to hype on the 6MP. For my istDL, I normally set it to 4MP to keep the size of the file smaller. Also, 6MP is sufficient to print A4 size already...
I think the manufacturers are pressured to keep the megapixel coming because they became the victim of their own of marketing hype. There is a market for large MP cameras for professionals but the mass market would most likely not need it.
Even my 6MP Lumix FZ7 I only set it at 4MP also...
But after I bought the K100D, I decided to leave it at 6MP because at the same time, I also bought a 250Gb hard disk! :bsmilie:

ok...for those who thought the K100D is the solution to everything, they'll be disappointed.
I was a little ambitious in pushing the camera through its paces, so I began trying to take images without flash indoors (Bishan National Library). For the less bright lighting areas, the images were generally blurred in default "Auto Pict" mode. I did not experiment with faster shutter speed because I knew the images would be very dim then. Some did turn out ok.
Perhaps if I was a little more photo-savvy, I can achieve more using the manual modes...

I also kept the ISO range from 200-800, choosing not to use 1600 and 3200 as I find the noise a tad too much for my liking.

Daylight images were great as expected. Moving closer to "Feng Wei" standard in this environment...heh heh. Overall the weight of the camera was a bit of an irritation especially since I haver gotten so used to the featherweight istDL.

But boy does this camera focus very quickly. Some images in the dark which the istDL would have problems locking focus was no problem for the K100D...

Didn't the Shake Reduction (SR) helps in low shutter speed - to aviod blurr image ?

Question:

does the pentax k100D have AF assist lamp?

is it difficult to auto focus in low light?

Hey man, my standard is quite low. You better target at some higher levels ;)

Cheers and happy shoooting.

Well, if you pop the built-in flash up, it can serve as AF assist lamp under low light condition. Of course an external flash can do the same too.

The AF in low light has improved alot on K100D (over all previous Pentax dSLR cameras). But I'd suggest you to wait for several more days and see what Pentax'd come up with the rumored K10D

as I said, do not expect miracles. Photos I took in darkened areas continue to be blurred.

The antishake in my Lumix FZ7 was quite easy to test but not so for the Pentax. That's because its a DSLR, hence its ccd is more sensitive and more responsive.

Anyone can give me some directions as to how to test and confirm the SR is working?
eg. what setting to use, etc?
