Image and sharing thread - Sigma 120-300 OS HSM Sports

I think I have access to all areas. Gonna be at the pit straights area with access to the sky suite. Ya Friday only hehe

Number 1 & 2 looks abit soft on the subject?
Number 3 is very good.
Bokeh are very nice and smooth.

did you guys ever try use better beamer with your telephoto lens?

mine? if u commenting mine...
yah.. it is soft.... + 2x tc shoot at F/5.6
action is fast also... diff to freeze their action

looks like the shutter speed is fast enough to freeze the subject.
but somehow i feel the image for #1 & 2 could be sharper like #3.
could it be the speed of AF?
mind sharing how was the AF speed performance using with 2x?

lens AF speed is fast, actual shutter i need to go home check.
subject distance is very very far.
performance with 2x is okay. i have many good photos with it.
but if subject distance is very far then it is difference.
like photo 1 n 2, it is infinity focus.
photo 3 is bare lens, no tc used, shoot at difference location.

i took some images of birds in flight in SBWR yesterday, will share photos later tonight.

i think the lens AF and C-AF tracking was excellent with the 2X TC, both canon and sigma, with canon winning out overall in IQ for having less CA, sharpness are similar.

i also tried AF accuracy when stacking TCs, i wld say it is ok for static objects, but unsuitable for tracking birds in motion. looks like a crop camera is still good for using the Sigma + 2X to get more reach compared to stacking extenders, in good light of course.

definitely a crop sensor is better for more reach than using or stacking extender.
but then when u have crop sensor,u will still think of further reach and stack the extender to it..lol

FF, add a 1.4x tc = 168 - 420, add 2x tc = 240 - 600.
APS-C 120-300 become 192-480, add a 1.4x tc = 268.8 - 672, add 2x tc = 384 - 960.

Own both FF & APS-C is best! LOL
Can choose what camera is suitable for the shoot.

But for better high ISO performance, APS-C size should limit to 12MB, FF to 18MB.
More than this ISO performance is noisy.

This is what a bird shooter share with me.

this is a very poisonous thread...

thankfully I don't shoot birds or sports if not I think sure take out card swipe liaos =X

I do wonder if this lens plus the new D400 or 7D2 (if they ever get announced) will make a very good "budget" sports setup.

if waiting for the 7D2, might as well pull the trigger for a 70D hehe... available right now with better IQ than 7D, same AF abilities as 7D

70D tracking is little bro of 1D series?
7D tracking is inherit of 1D series, just the ISO performance is not really good.

70D has the same AF as 7D, the same 19 cross type AF points, only thing it loses to 7D is plastic body, 7FPS and 98% VF coverage compared to 7D's magnesium alloy, 8FPS and 100% VF coverage

but of course the 7D is much cheaper now second hand at 800+ vs 1.3k for 70D

from the DPreview samples, the 70D looks like it improved on 7D's image quality

I don't think high ISO performance is directly related to file size. We can still shoot high ISO(within the acceptable range) in high MP.
I would say that it is the amount of crop that matters. I had prefer a non crop image shot at ISO 1600 over a full crop shot at ISO 400 on a crop sensor.

ok i'm gonna share some image from my first birding attempt at Sungei Buloh, please be gentle on me haha

even with 600mm of focal length i felt the birds were too far away, most of them had to be cropped at least 50-70%
