Read some where OS should be off when mounted on monopod/tripod

Yes,it should be unless manufacturer says not needed; like Canon's teleprimes...they have a built in tripod sensing technology.

haaa no la... i won't bring out all the gear in a single outing unless there is a need.... prob stick with the long lens + TCs and wide angle / macro for usual outings hehe

wah bro! your back is gonna break. LOL

true, temperature and humidity are a factor, but i think it applies more for gaffer tapes. For vinyl wrap, you just need a hair dryer and the bonding agent will loosen up and vinyl goes back into the original straight lines without distortion. If million dollar cars like ferarris and lambos can be safely wrapped in vinyl wraps (high heat from engine and rain/sun exposure), I think a few stripes on lenses will survive well :p

I have also stuck matt black vinyl on certain high wear parts of the camera bodies, works great for protection against wear... not so good protection against drops of course. For drops a lens coat will be better for sure.

With your experience on other bodies,it could be temperature/humidity related, causing those vinyl stickers to distort n erode away.

Ya, I tried that too.

IQ is still bad, is like my lens have astigmatism.

any fliters on? poor quality filters cause image quality issues. If IQ is just bad and there is no front and rear focus issues, really, just bring it back to sigma for a swap on a new piece.

if it is not front/rear focus issues, lens calibration won't help

are your shots posted here shot with filter ON?
personally i prefer to shoot without filter.
just have to be more cautious in handling the lens.

mine are filters off, still waiting for my B+W that is currently on its way to SG hehe... i got a Vivitar multicoated 105mm filter. no image degradation on the bare lens, but seems to impact when using a 2X TC.

Really? Damn I was hoping after calibration everything will be alright.

No i did not use any filters, I have no intention to use filters of the sport lens too.

I am still new to this, so Im not sure if it is a front/rear focus problem, I have also call up Sigma and made an appointment tomorrow morning, lets see what Sigma have to say.

If not i will push to change a new piece.

check your images, if you know what your focus point was (best if centre focus point), see if any details infront or behind your subject is clearer than the area you focused on.

best to test this on a tripod with some fixed targets to eliminate human error. if you see consistently the subject is focused in front or behind, den it is a problem that can be fixed by calibration. That's what the usb dock is for, or what the sigma service centre is for.

If nothing is in focus, they will probably have to send the unit back to Japan for fixing, and i would want a swap instead of a repair since the lens is new, and will be away from you in japan for at least a few weeks for repairs.

That said, the Sigma service staff are actually very nice. see if you can get them to put the lens/body on their test rigs/charts and demonstrate the focusing accuracy in your presence.

Thanks for the advice, I will test it out when I'm home later.

I read good reviews on Sigma services too, hope they can solve my problem.

Now I'm afraid that they tell me that there is no problem at all,and the photographer's skills is the problem.

That will be embarrassing. lol

Don't worry too much. Even though I own lots of the high-end bodies & lenses, I am also no better than you. I am still learning to take good photos.

I had issues with my 1D3 and only can shoot in 'one shot' mode..AF Servo mode, the lens goes crazy. Didnt have issue with my 60D. I wonder if you have same issue as mine last time...

Now that you mention, I shoot mostly in AF Servo mode, as im shooting birds. Even when the bird is still.

Hmm, damn I might be wrong about the lens, it is my skills... hahaha

That's true. But modern IS/OS/VC/VR technology is able to detect whether the camera is set on a tripod and automatically turn itself off. However, this is not a fail safe practice therefore getting used to the practice of turning off one's version of stabilization is best.

I ran into this issue Saturday night when taking some city-scape photos of MBS and area. I set my camera + 24-105 lens on a tripod with IS set to "ON". I forgot to turn it off and didn't realize it until the next day when I was back home. According to the the Canon 24-105 f/4 IS technical report, the lens has "no restrictions" when used together with a tripod. I translate that to mean that it has tripod detection. Regardless the photos turned out well even at 100%.

All Canon L lenses have tripod detection built-in from the year 2000 onwards.

I leave the OS on when using my tripod with a gimbal head. I find that when using this lens at 600 5.6, there is still potential for camera/lens shake when depressing the shutter button.

upgrade your Gimbal and tripod..lol

haaa somehow I think it is the tripod collar that may not be sturdy enough, or perhaps the 2Xiii not tight enough with the lens. Seems ok when using 300 2.8 bare, just a little shaky when using with the TCs.

tripod and Gimbal seems solid enough to me. ok la.... not using for long exposures, just gonna use it when i wanna camp longer time at particular locations. probably gonna bring it for the F1 night race this month hehe... not sure if I can handhold the lens and camera the whole evening.
