I think I may have found the root cause of my 7D misfocusing problem!

This is my 4th digital SLR, and I had the 350D, 30D as well. Now, I also have the 50D and D300 at my disposal.

Guys, it is not the noise that we're having concern, and of course at a high ISO like these, noise is common.

The point of contention is not the amount of noise, but rather the quality of noise, that is causing concern to both the tech and I.

actually the amt of noise is also dependant on what is the raw convertor you are using. :)

I've gotten my 7D exchanged for a replacement unit. The techicians weren't able to solve the misfocusing issue when I use auto AF selection, as he cited a algorithmic problem which could not be calibrated.

The 2nd body I've gotten did not have such an issue at all, and we tested various AF points, and they were spot on, although the centre AF pt tends to be slightly sharper than the rest, which is understandable given that it is double crossed.

Now, I'm a happier man...at least for now...

Woohoo, Congrats K on getting a new replacement set. Hope this new one is trouble free for u.
Have a good trip :thumbsup::)

I also just had my 7D back. Will subject it to some rigorous testing over the weekend and report on the outcome later.

After more than a month at the service center and 5 visits there, the Canon 7D AF is still in the pits. 25% shots taken with center spot AF are out of focus for mysterious reasons. The same lenses when mounted on my 450D give 100% hit rate.

I am going crazy.

What the hell is Canon QC and CSC thinking? @#)*&$%(!$&S^

Out of curiosity.... can't you kindly ask for a replacement unit ? Seems to me that 5 visits to CSC is excessive and a outright waste of your time ......

Yes, I am going to demand that. They better get me a copy from the latest batch. Otherwise, I will keep exchanging the bodies until I get something satisfactory. I am no longer putting with this f**king s%%t.

I've porcessed some of the shots I've taken using AI servo high speed continuous, it seems that normal service has resumed, and the sharpness seems acceptable to me.

Here are some of the pics I've taken of my son running with the ball.

Somehow, I feel that the 'film-like' rendition of the images take some getting used to for me.

What's that? Good or bad? :bsmilie:

Did you see this guy's auto area AF results? It works without a hitch. I think CSC still hasn't learnt how to calibrate the 7D AF sensor to get it fully working. Nicholas said that individual AF point can be calibrated separately so I suspect he does not know how to get everything to work together. It's CLEARLY NOT an AF algorithm problem.

Must my 7D be sent in another month for him to master the calibration process? This is sick.

Why not ask them for a loaner while they fix the problem since it has been over a month?

I am tired of this. Since there is another copy of 7D (belongs to CS) that exhibits AF issues, I will get them to play with their own copy until they have fully mastered it before they do anything on customers' cameras.

Haha, I believe that their 'own' copy is the one I exchanged for this new one. :P

I'm just happy that the AF is working fine now, and about the 'film-like' quality of the images esp in ISO higher than 1600, it is not bad la, just different from what I used to get from 30D. I'm not talking about noise here.

Ooops... :embrass: Glad you are happy with 7D AF now. Actually, I am OK with it too. There is nothing inherently wrong with 7D AF algorithm, accuracy and consistency... if one can find a perfect copy. Sigh.

In any case, Nicholas and the CSC team clearly need to master the 7D AF calibration procedure. I have written an email to him on this issue. I am sure if they pass me the AF software and calibration procedure, I'll be able to do a better job. :bsmilie: Too bad, it's proprietary.

I think I know what you mean by 'film like' quality now. Due to the 7D high rez, image noise appears as very fine grain at high ISO. It is indeed pleasing to the eye. This is why I find ISO 6400 on 7D to be totally acceptable:

just a generic question from the guys having AF issues with the 7D. When did you buy your unit? Is it when it 1st came out or just recently. I heard that the 1st batch was the one having the problems but the succeeding ones have no problems.

That is my suspicion too. I can tell you that when it works, the 7D is an absolute delight to use. :bsmilie:

Personally, my advice is to get it from Cathay Photo (no, I don't work there) because they have a large inventory and their stock sell very quickly so there are better chances of getting a copy from their latest batch. You can also test the camera on the spot if you know what to look out for. :D

I agree with you wholeheartedly, the 7D is absolutely a joy to use, as it is easily the most versatile camera I ever owned. :)

yeah i hope latest ones will have no issues.

I'lll probably buy one again when the price drops next year and when the issues have been resolved.
I have no problem with it not being full frame.

Sell off my 5d2,24-105 F4 and 7-200 F4 IS and get a the 7D , 17-55 2.8 and 70-200mm 2.8 IS.
Same low light performance, same value but with more advanced features and better controls :D

7D's Auto ISO in MANUAL mode is a very good feature that a lot of reviewers fail to mention.
Fix your Aperture and Shutter speed and the ISO changes to maintain exposure.
It allows you take the best quality action shot in uneven lighting. A lot of times in with places uneven or changing lighting (Like a Stage presentation )i discover that i could have taken a shot with a lower ISO setting.

I hope they bring it to the 5D2 as firmware update.

bro how sure are u that the 5dIII wldnt have all the 7D's features and better??? i think unless u want that 1.6x factor, stick with your 5DII man...and correct me if im wrong...5DII has a FF sensor, shldnt it work better at higher ISO compared to 7D??

I'm very sure that as far as features are concerned, the 7D serves as the standard flag bearer for the next generation of EOSes that will be coming our way in the next year or two, including the 5D MkIII, or whatever it may be called.:)
