GX-1 compared to EP-3

i am both a olympus and Panasonic user. have epl1, ep3, GF1, G3 and GX1.

here is my opinion on Olympus
better colour,
nicer OOC jpeg,
built in image stabilser well implemented for both short and long focal length.
Reliable metering and white balance
better video output with the new models like ep3
Hugely customizable and flexible controls
soft touch screen on ep3, can take pic easily rather than press hard.
Wide range of Art Filter effects encourages creative experimentation
international warranty.

I've read quite a few comments about Panasonic having better menu system compared to Oly but I dont quite understand why so maybe I am missing something. Oly's super control panel (came disabled by default which I dont understand why but after enabled) is so nice and fast as compared to Panny's Q. menu so is there some hidden menu that I'm missing from Panny's interface? The "recent MY settings" on Panny is a nice touch but that's about it from what i gathered.

guys... so whats the advantage of pana m43 system over the oly's then??... been hearing about oly's strengths... lets hear about pana's?? (besides high iso noise performances)... hee... pardon me, i have short experiences with m43 system...

is it true that Gx1's raw pics are better than EP3? Whereas, EP3's jpeg pics are superior to GX1? pls advise

Hard to tell from where this thread is headed to. (almost like a brand war)

I suggest you look over the Steve Huff review linked in this thread.
However, Steve H. does a real world review, in other words, a "if I picked up the camera and used it AS IS" review, so you must look at it in this context.
If you want a base equivalent starting point on picture files and work up from there in PP then look at other sites (DRP; IR)

From Steve H.'s review, Panny has very conservative metering (there is a strong preference of panny to preserve highlights; nothing new here; Been like this since GF1).
The water/oil tank photo is at least 1/3 stop different (same settings; but ISO160 vs 200).
Steve, does point this out in the replies that it was a 'AS IS' look at how the cameras handle when used 'AS IS' as most users would.
So if you tweak a +1/3 or +1/2 bias to exposure always on the Panny, that makes it the same as the Oly in exp. A simple +1/3 in PP can do it as well.
At the risk of blown highlights (same risk the Oly is running)

Here are the full size ISO 200 and 160 jpegs from imaging resource.

EP3 : Digital Cameras, Olympus PEN E-P3 Digital Camera Test Image
GX1 : Digital Cameras, Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 Digital Camera Test Image

As you can see color representation is different on both cameras. Which is more pleasing? Which is more correct?
I like the Oly pop in colors, but the mannequin seems a bit to magenta if I compare it to the typical ones I see around Orchard Rd. So Panny colors seem more accurate.
See how well the G3 (another Panny camera) scores against the Oly EPL2 and others in color accuracy :
Color - Panasonic G3 Digital Camera Review
Accurate does not mean pleasing in most cases :)
GX1 photo is also larger at 16mp vs 12mp, so you need to downscale the GX1 photo or upscale the Oly one to have a more objective comparison on whether the extra resolution is worth it.
So the Panny is not bad when a user wants an 'accurate baseline' to start off with.

Of course, if the user wants, he/she can look at sample review like the ones in IR, and study the color histogram between the oly and panny, to find out roughly what color bias and tone curve needs to be used to get to as close as the Oly colors.

For RAW, its not out yet in DPR, but have a look and play around with the G3 results.

IMO, if the user does PP on his/her photos (RAW or JPG), the differences in exposure/color/contrast are generally not a big deal.
Since this is a photo forum, I'd think most folks here do PP to some extent (simple or complex).
In fact I use Picasa and just click the "Auto" Tuning and that works fine in most cases.
Just a "S" in the tone curve in PP will yield the necessary contrast and 'pop' in a Panny photo.

Just buy the m4/3 camera one feels worth it and like better.

Very fair and well written comments with links to support too. I think we should stop this before it becomes a brand war (hope not) .
I believe whichever m4/3 we use , regardless ep3 or Gx1/G3, they are capable cams and good in their own ways. Taking pics are fun with any of them.
Maybe we can forcus on other things like straps, cases or bags instead of keep comparing cams, which is quite pointless as both brands will keep coming out newer and better cams :)

Totally agree. Oly n panny are both good cams. All cameras are a compromise where you learn the issues with them and work around them. Heck. The m4/3 format itself is a compromise.

There's no such thing as a perfect camera or system. Cost, size, weight, IQ, video perf, lens selection are all different. Canon, Nikon, pentax, sony all have compromises.

Buy what you feel comfortable with and find a joy shooting. If not you will always complain. !!

:D Totally agree with you

I will post my strap bought from HK later...

Sorry for the poor photo image, taken by my blackberry.
Bought from HK at LCX, I think about HKD180+... any bro know where to get similar straps in Singapore? Thanks and HAPPY NEW YEAR! Peace!!! =D

Today was the best weather to date since I laid hands on the GX1. I spend the morning by the beach with kids.

In good light, the GX1's OOC jpgs was great. I have no issue with any of the colour rendition including skin tones. The greatest strength of the GX1 has to be colour accuracy and every tone was well rendered and well saturated. If anything the GX1 rendered the reds better than the EP3. There was 4 very different shades of red to pink today being worn, and it was well rendered in most situations by the GX1.

Yesterday there was slight overcast. In comparison to today's pics, the skin tones tended towards overly yellow (but it could be because I was increasing "Saturation" +1 in the camera). In one pic where the usual hawker center's table was rendered near orange with the usual red plate getting an orangish tone when in reality it was a pale yellow and the plate, being old, was a washed out red. At one point I was manually choosing "Daylight" instead of sticking to "AWB", and I feel the results were better. Maybe my main grouse of the GX1's OOC jpgs is not that of the way it renders but more of the AWB itself with regards to colour.

Today's session reinforced one strong point of the GX1. The AF was fast. And accurate. I had only one misfocused shot. One other prominent point I noticed is the GX1's spot metering seem more spot on than the EP3's. With the EP3's spot metering, I tend to get the pic "less exposed" than I wish but not so with the GX1. Most of the exposures today were satisfactory.

The GX1's default NR is 0. I reduced it -1. I am not too sure whether this contributed to better sharpness or even better tonal graduation but pixel peeping comparison with the EP3 (default to "Auto" and "Low") showed less noise in the shadows for the GX1. All ISO were below 400. I have yet to use the i.Dynamic or i.Resolution feature in the GX1. In the EP3, I never use the "Auto Graduation" feature.

...... The Forced On Flash is actually a fill-in. I have the GF1/GH1/GX1 and all have the same problems. My XZ1 takes great flash pictures.

....

Hmmm .... interesting comment. It did occur to me that the "Forced ON" flash option sounded like "Fill-in" but I doubt so. Fill-in don't tend to over expose, unlike what the GX1 is doing.

With Oly's SCP, it is logical but involves more steps. First, press "OK". Then "Left/Right" to get to where you want. Another "OK" (second one). Then "Right/Left" to item and another "OK" (third OK).

With Q.Menu, press "Q.Menu". Then select item on screen. Then directly select item again (also 3 equivalent OKs). But definitely less of the "Left/Right" compare to Oly's SCP.

SCP is NOT customisable but Q.Menu is. And easily - just like Firefox's Menu :)

Thanks for the "user review".
May I know did you set the camera in "Normal" or "Vivid" setting?
I tried using the i.D and i.R but I found not much of a difference... any tips on using those functions? When to set low, high, etc
Thanks!

Nice straps .....

Decent pic from Blackberry as well ..... :)

But maybe you want to start another thread on GX1's accessories ........ because I really think this is OT on this thread - no offence meant here :)

Thanks for the "user review".

Thanks!

My previous experience with "Vivid" on the G1 was horrible to say the least. So far, it has only being less than 2 weeks with the GX1 and today was the first day out in good weather so .......very limited experience :) My preference is either "Standard" or, when taking people, "Natural".

Again, from what I can see. The strongest point of the GX1 seem to be high ISO sensitivity and very little noise so I work around this key feature. The other point I notice is that with bad lighting or higher ISO, there is a tendency for decreased saturation so I am trying to Customised 3 different sets of Menus for these setting. Don't think I have got the best settings yet .... :(

What about yourself?

This is the "Equipment" part of Clubsnap Forums. I think this is where equipment are meant to be discussed. I also believe that in discussing and sharing, we actually learn more about our own equipment. Personally I feel it is more pointless to talk about straps, cases, bags etc because those are more fashion than equipment related (no offense meant here - just that I am more interested in the actual hardware that creates the image than the image of the hardware created by the accessories .....).

Anyway, as in any forum, whatever forum, there should be discussion. And as in any discussion, there would be opinions. And where there are opinions, there tend to be emotions and egos involved. Unless the forums are between robots. Personally, I have learned to avoid getting personal. I have tremendous respect for some people here because of their knowledge, and I do respect most people here, including yourself.

If there is actually a brand "war" going on here, then I tend to think it is between the more juvenile . I do think that quite a few of us here actually own both Panny and Oly cameras :)

Many tend to forget that there is another aspect of the comparison, that is the Video part..

Anyway, now that I have EPL3 (though not EP3) and GX1.. I liked them both, going to put a zoom on one and a fast 45mm prime lens on the other and I have a companion travel lens package. Both capable of taking good photos and video as well.
