GX-1 compared to EP-3

Yupe ..... very good at ISO1600  In good conditions, even 6400 is acceptable!

With regards the shake part. When using dSLR, the right hand tends to be able to grip and hence help with steadying. Sometimes, the right (esp if it is your dominant hand) can literally shoot one hand ....... :)

With these "little" cameras, it is practically impossible to grip comfortably with the right hand so I tend to "rest more" on the left and lightly squeeze with the right. Anyway just my way, I am sure you'll find a way to suit yourself :)

Thanks. Will try it out. But still getting the lvf2 to give me a 3 point support. (cough...excuses) lol

OP, I think the thread below may shared the same sentiments as you except you go into more details with various posts and also being very objective.

My take on the GX1 vs. EP3 debate [Page 1]: Micro Four Thirds Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

I am looking forward to hear from you on ISO performance but we all know the G3/GX1 sensor will definitely be cleaner at high ISO but what I would like to see are some comparisons (if possible) and if high ISO performance is really significant enough. One other thing I am interested to know if the cleaner pictures from GX1 compromised by lesser detail at high ISO?

Good link!

Just wondering whether output from G3 and GX1 similar ...... I guess if can tweak the EP1 sensor to get EP3 output ....

comparison of high iso

Cool. Looks like the GX1 is really good at high ISO.

Indeed! GX1 looks 1 stop better with RAW.
Looking for OOC Jpegs too

yes, GX1 is better in ISO, but the rest cannot compare with EP3.

why EP3 better?

1) better colour and WB, excellent jpeg colour.

2) Built in image stabilser
althought GX1 has better ISO, say 1 stop better than EP3, but EP3 has 3-4 stops advantage in IBIS. example, if in low light GX1 need to bump up ISO to 3200 to prevent camera shake, ep3 only need to use ISO800 or less to achieve the same.
image quality EP3 at ISO800 is definitely better than GX1 at ISO3200.

3) EP3 has better screen, screen also more responsive, unlike gx1 must press hard which may lead to camera shake.

4) EP3 has Better looks, more retro and better built. with leatherette will be even better look.

5) more choice of Picture orientation, etc.

well its always like that, when u buy iphone4s, you see others galaxySII and other phone better in screen and battery life, but in the end, the best phone is the one you have and gonna use and work around the perceived shortcomings and enhance the advantageous features...so the best camera is the one you decided to buy and use for the next one to one and a half yrs before you upgrade and the same exercise of comparison will repeat itself again, so enjoy the present!

I believe the problem arises is when people cannot accept that technology is always improving and that the current "phones" they have may not be the better one anymore.

Worst still is when they are so biased that they can no longer be objective.

There are alot of impulse buyer out there who think the latest is the best and regret after knowing their new toys is less versatile than the older toys. Worst of all, they cannot accept the fact.

In Psychology, this is what we termed the "Possession Syndrome". People will tend to think that what they have currently is the best and will find all mean to justify why it is so, despite evidence contrary to it.

i recently bought the GX1 too, also have ep3, EPL1 and G3.

yes, i must also agree with you on the above points. EP3 is indeed a better camera.

Mostly agreed, though better looks is subjective, I think GX1 is pretty smart looking, EP3 is retro.
Lack of IBIS depends on the lenses being used. If it's olympus or legacy or pany without power/mega OIS, then pt 2 applies. I uses much primes, manual and af but seldom see the need to bump up iso more than 1600. Pic orientation is that a advantage? :dunno:
I find the OLED of EP3 a little difficult to judge the colors compared to other pens LCD. Just my 2 cents of previous owning of EP3.

Totally agree with you on this one. I don't think EP3 is pretty at all. GF1 is prettier in my eyes. As to GX1, never really see one yet, don't know ...

Wow the fight between m4/3 user finally happen...and I thought the reason why I choose m4/3 format is to conveniently change between Oly and Pany without worried about lens compatibility...now I'm still shooting with my EPL-1 which only let me down in misfocus part and slow AF in low light....patiently waiting for upgrade justification and hoping by reading the thread I can be sure which camera should I choose.... but perhaps it's time to choose another system....?:-)

When I picked up G3 n ep3 side by side, I was disgusted by the look and handling of ep3.

I actually like GX1 and EP3, both are differently nice, and at times depends on the lens that's mounted on it, modern lenses surely GX1, vintage ones no doubt EP3. G3 though doesn't appeal to me that much except that swivel screen and EVF, but then the EVF hump really kills the looks. G3 is more functional then GX1. Oh well, can't have all i suppose. Looks is secondary for me anyways.

Based on the photos posted, I gather the following:
1) EP3 has better white balance
I gather that EP3 has more accurate white balance in certain conditions. This was evident in the 3rd photo. However, if you were to really look at the pics, the focus points for GX1 and EP3 were different. Not sure how both metering works but it could have resulted in the differences in white balance.
2) EP3 has sharpening set higher on default
I personally do not like sharpening to be set at such a high level unless I am shooting in raw too. If I only shoot in jpeg, I prefer to sharpen in photoshop. If you shoot in both raw and jpeg and like how "sharp" EP3 is, just set your sharpness +1 or +2 and you will get the same effect.
3) EP3 has colors which offer more punch
Whether this is a pro/con depends on individual. I have taken quite a number of photos which GX1 and find that the colors are quite representative of the scene. However, it is a fact that more punchier colors look better to most. If you really like the EP3 type of "punch", you can also achieve it by increasing the saturation settings and maybe decreasing the contrast setting. I just tried +2 and -2 respectively and the photos looked really punchy but I wouldn't do this unless I have the raw file.

Nonetheless, I am still blown by the low level of noise by GX1, esp if you shoot raw. Am waiting for the raw review as Steve said in his comments that "Be sure to check out the RAW comparison tomorrow where the GX1 sharpens up considerably."
