G11 and S90 Arrival and Prices in SINGAPORE !!!!!

To me the LL high-ISO image from the LX3 doesn't look the best that the camera can do (maybe slightly OOF?). The Spanish comparison, from www.quesabesde.com/noticias/canon-powershot-s90-panasonic-lumix-dmc-lx3-comparativa,1_5784 , shows the LX3 superior in detail, although oversharpened. IMO the LX3 edges out the S90 in terms of detail, though it produces an unpleasant texture. The S90 is more filmlike, but detail is inferior.

LL's own LX3 review shows better detail in the high ISOs.

So the qn remains, when do we need an LX3 then? Any thoughts to share?

Maybe for people who wants a UWA (24mm) will look into LX3? Extra 4mm could make a different right? (put aside the ability to attached more accessories for LX3)

ermmmm...

when you want to have more powerful flash (external flash)? to diffuse or bounce :dunno:
and when you want to use CPL and ND+8 filters?

is there any reason to own both??? ;)

Some of my friends own 2 DSLR for convenience sake (don't need to keep changing lens). ;)
I am not sure for you but for me, there are certain moments when I just need a P&S instead of lugging my DSLR everywhere. :bsmilie:

Hi, my qn is more aim at those who already have DSLR with UWA (or other lens) and therefore if they want another cam, would they have consider LX3 or S90. As it seems, S90 appears to have the slight edge over LX3 for now.

Guys, I know the range is f/2 - f/4.9. I'm interested to know how fast the maximum aperture falls as you zoom - which the websites and manual don't seem to have.

The reason is, I'm interested to know how far you can zoom and still have a large aperture (say f/2.8).

OK, on the Net, found these data:
"For example, at 60mm, LX3 has f/2.8 max aperture while S90 has smaller f/3.5."
"2.0@28mm-2.5@35mm-3.2@50mm-4.5@85mm-4.9@105mm"

Combined:
28mm 2.0
35mm 2.5
50mm 3.2
60mm 3.5
85mm 4.5
105mm 4.9

Not too bad, though wonder what kind of DOF control that means.
More data from http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1033&message=33082251

LX3 ------------(S90)
24.0mm @ f/2.0
27.7mm @ f/2.1 (S90 28mm @ f/2.0)
29.6mm @ f/2.2
31.9mm @ f/2.2
34.7mm @ f/2.3 (S90 35mm @ f/2.5)
41.3mm @ f/2.5
47.9mm @ f/2.6
--------------- (S90 50mm @ f/3.2)
52.1mm @ f/2.7
56.8mm @ f/2.8
60.0mm @ f/2.8 (S90 60mm @ f/3.5)
--------------- (S90 70mm @ f/4.0)
--------------- (S90 85mm @ f/4.5)
--------------- (S90 105mm @ f/4.9)

Seems that the S90 aperture more or less matches the LX3 from 28mm to 35mm, after which it trails (by less than a stop).

IMO, since Cathay selling at $700, thus I feel slightly expensive.
The cleaning kit can be very cheap, so i feel basically the battery is cost $39. If you feel the battery worth the price, then is ok to grab the deal.

The original Canon battery NB-6L costs $59 at Cathay Photo.

thats cheap.
better buy 1 original battery than 2 unreliable 3rd party (Divipower i assume) at $30 each.

Yes, I mean, if they have an UWA on DSLR, but do not want to carry their DSLR all the while, so maybe they will consider LX3 (with 24mm) to substitute their DSLR with UWA.

Of course, there could be the case, where someone only have DSLR with medium to tele lens, while trying to purchase LX3 to cover the UWA region, and vice versa.

True but would you buy either 1? And your preference will be?
Imho, I will go for S90 due to all the pros bro Garion have mentioned above (even though I don't like the scroll wheel and flat surface buttons).

my take on LX3 (i own LX3) and S90 (tried in shop only):

1. LX3 has got very poor WB estimation in artificial light ending up with either more magenta in skin tone or blue tone in whites. S90 seems to be doing better.

2. LX3 has a higher 2.5 fps. I shot kid's expressions using Shutter priority mode and burst mode, managed to capture a few 'golden' faces. Skeptical if S90's 0.9 fps can do the same job.

3. LX3 is has too odd shape making it not pocketable at all. Though even when I bring my ixus out, I hardly put it in the pocket, so might do the same for S90. S90 has got a more appealing form.

4. More juice out of the LX3 battery.

5. LX3 has 24mm. Though an advantage since I sold my Sigma 10-20, but its short-coming is the lack of zoom! Hate that every time I wanna take a portrait shot. So positive or negative point? Step back to get wider shot or jump over the fence and trample over the pond just to get a closer shot of the man-eating white tigers? I vote for more zoom even if its 3.8x, its still more versatile (more walkabout-able), face it...its S90.

6. Noise control and details. Both very much on par. Up to individual preference. I prefer LX3.

7. LX3 fiddles around a small thumb-joystick which accesses almost all shooting settings, but I have always adored the turn-wheel concept and control ring (despite it controlling only one function) of EOS, G-series and now S90. Wheels are always better, just look at how successful an ipod is!

8. HD video on LX3! Love it on my HDTV.

9. No gripes over the handling of both, since I grew from ixus. No issues with the rear turn wheel of S90 since I rest my fat thumb on the thumb rest all the time.

10. External bounce flash (using SB600 & SB800) gives very close to DSLR-ish outcomes. Direct flash is just something I will never use! I rather have noisy pictures than have direct flash killing the picture. LX3 edges with hotshoe accessory.

11. Appearance. Subjective but LX3 of course! S90 looks like another incarnation of ixus.

12. Special features such as dynamic B+W, pinhole effect or nostalgic effects. I think most image software has filters for it. But I do like the dynamic B+W out of the LX3.

13. LX3 ver. 2.1 has a zoom resume capability which I am loving so much! Not sure if S90 has it. I had a defective zoom lever on my ixus.... call that a phobia!

14. 1cm Macro on the LX3 is definitely useful at times, but the AF can be rather cranky at that distance.

15. Lens caps are a bitch! Swing here and there, dunks in the soup when taking a food picture. I prefer the cap-less S90.

16. Lanyard or wrist strap doesn't matter. But a lanyard adds bulk to the LX3. Wrist strap can be changed to a neck strap too. Or even better, go strapless! So both are on par.

17. Pwned-ness. This is a rather nonsensical point, totally subjective, but LX3 has a good track record of retaining its RP even one year on, and yet not being replaced buy a newer model with more fancy technology. With Canon's style, I just feel that before the warranty of my S90 expires, there will be a S95 or S100 etc. with HD video and or a fancy remote flash capability. Then I will really feel pwned.

At the end of the day, I love the LX3, goes in my bag everyday 24/7, but still yearn for the slightly more zoom and compactness of the S90. That's why might just get the S90 and play for a few months, then maybe sell the other which sits on the bench...

You have a few good point.

Just to confirm with you, for the latest firmware of LX3 (2.1), it is still not able to zoom while taking video right?

But, we can zoom (to, say 50mm) before start taking video? After start, cannot zoom in and out anymore?

Thanks.

actually, from a video point of view, we really hate zooming during a shoot. we all know how "well" the zooming trigger works in compact camera or camcorder, they are simply a b**** to use! u can never get a proper nice zoom going on. so ya, no zooming during video? that works fine for me. Am also considering getting either the LX3 n S90. Currently, LX3 leads the battle.... with a silly GF1 trailing juz that bit behind.. haha :sweatsm:

Well, not everyone feel zooming is a chore during video taking. In fact, I like zooming, I feel zooming while taking video is useful and able to convey certain message.

I will try the s90 1st...I will buy either one. Not yet decide...

Hmm

For travelling overseas to a place with nice scenic, you have LX3.
For any other ocassion, you have S90.

Sounds familiar, just joking.

My take. Once again, in terms of priority.

1) Before you buy any cam, be it DSLR FF, APSC, 4/3, compact, handphone and you intend to shoot JPEG, please look at the white balance. Anything about noise and detail is not as important! Different manufacturer has different colour for skin tone, sky, 5s exposure for night sky with lights. It is A LOT OF DIFF, really.

(My friend's Sony A900 give a Purplish Tone compared to my D90 when we shot the night sky at the sea side. I am not sat the purplish is bad. Try a 5s exposure at the night sky with a bit of light from the fore ground)

2) Amount of Zoom or how wide, in mm. 24mm vs 28mm is a lot of diff... is not maciam like 4mm. Technically not correct. If you insist on using mm, well 4mm out of 105mm not a lot of diff. <4%. 4mm in 28 mm is >10% diff! Trust me lah, a lot of pple in DSLR world pay a lot of $ just to get that 4mm. I am 1 such idiot.

3) Controls and intelligent modes (for Point n Shoot). Can almost conclude the newer the cam, the better. Imagine a face recognition that really works in say LX5? Haha!

4) Comfort in Holding the cam, the Grip! (LX3 clear winner with grip). This will improve yr shots in terms of fraction or even a few F Stops. (If u dun know whats F Stop, dun bother) S90 grip not that fantastic, to the extend that the front turning ring not that easy to use.

5) F Number (If u dun understand, its not important)

6) Ehh noise and detail. If u dun pixel peep, LX3 and S90 not a lot of diff. In fact, each has its own characteristics but the diff is minute compared to above.

Conclusion, look at point 1 and decide what you want! If cannot, ignore point 1 all together and move to point 2.

agree!
i love zooming on a camcorder.
Silent, smooth and stable!
zooming adds Emphasis to the subject.

damn... u hit the sore spot of LX3's video! Can't zoom in video mode.
Only manual zooming (moving forwards and backwards with the cam)! LOL

illustrating my point #2,
shot this using normal burst mode on Shutter Priority.
used with digital zoom (additional 2.8x here) just to get up close,
despite severe quality deterioration, when resized to sizes for web viewing or onto mobile phone screens, very acceptable.
applied a little post-processing.

I second this sentiment. The current LX3 price is about the same as last year's.
