I understand how Bokeh1.8 feels.

Very much the same as Gaints vs Elves.

Both have its advantages and disadvantages.....

Chances is wat Bokeh1.8 need..

Keep on fighting for your passion !
by offering free services in an important event such as someone's wedding and making use of that occasion for amassing his own personal experience?

outstanding.

wat the threadstarter need to do is to learn the ropes. how so?
try to look for a job as a P.A! how so?
make cold calls to fotography studios and such. learning how to make cold calls is a survival skill at times. :bsmilie:

owning a DSLR does not make you pro.

talking is nothing. you can join NATO if you want. but i strongly advice you to start buliding a portfolio.

its not that the pros dun wish to hire you. its because you don't have any works for them to take reference. and its a risk to hire someone new in photography. reason being you do not have the basics.

u are basically new in this forum. and suddenly u come saying FREE photography services.. and u are unlucky enough for me to come across this thread because i am one who strongly against free services.

i even pay allowances to my assistances. and i tell them, i pay you to learn. not the other way around. so u better learn.

bulit a portfolio.

can i PA you for weddings? Seriously and i dun want any pay.
I've done more than 10 weddings so far on my own, for friends, friends referals and i do find myself improving each time, but somehow, i find the improvement slowing down.

REally need to find a shifu more than anything else.

by taking allowance..u will be under pressure to learn and do better....

not with just some normal pics

bokeh1.8 (do you shoot with prime lenses?? :) ),

your just do it attitude is good, but you don't have to offer free services to attract people to allow you to learn and gain a portfolio.

in the best case scenario, all is good and all the parties are happy. the couple might think you are so good, they tell their friends you are good and should be charging $$$.

in the worst case scenario - well, let's just say that even if you are offering free services, there might be couples who might have unreasonable expectations.

as suggested by other forummers, you could look for a willing mentor and do some shoots as a second photog.

my very first few weddings done close to a decade ago were no-fee affairs for relatives - ok, they still gave me angbows. I even didn't use my own camera - i borrowed a single camera and hammerhead flash and learnt about 1/40 f5.6 bounce flash from my school mate.

then i did second photography for about two years on and off for friends and strangers (advertising at singaporebrides, which Kuang suggested) whenever the opp arise, to build a photojournalistic wedding portfolio.

i would say you will have much more fun doing second photography to a main photog. will pros take you in? i'm sure some are happy to mentor you.

I am just a student trying to learn.. my relatives are all married.. cousins still need to wait 5-10 years more..

my friends are all too young.. what can I do? I dun mind tagging along to a pro.. but will any pros even consider to take me in?

maybe its just me.. I can feel that most of the replies are very harsh.. and some even wanted to see my portfolio.. but what's the point? you are like attacking someone who wants to learn and nothing else..

I'm tired of all these comments.. I shall close this thread.. (mods, can do this for me? I dunno how to.. thanks)

but I have to emphasize. all of these is not aimed at targetting or upsetting the "rice bowl" of professionals.. I'm just shooting out of love for photography..

sorry to cause any misunderstandings that I want to be pro or whatsoever. I have never wanted to do that.. sorry to make you all feel that I sound confident.. (maybe I am not too good with words, ha ha..)

regards,
Bokeh1.8

When I said abt your portfolio, it is for us to help u. Yet you are taking things so sensitively, I wonder what u are going to do when you have to face your client and they sue you. Trust me, I have seen photographers being sued before. Now that is harsh

You're saying someone will sue him for a job that he did for free?

Maybe not. But the risk is very real for paid jobs, no matter how low. Either this or they smear your repu, demand for refunds etc.... Anything goes.

Once you are doing this for real, and i really mean the real stuff hundreds of weddings/events be it cheap or expensive, you will know this line is no sugar.

When he is doing it for free, it is unlikely that he will be sued. But imagine a paid job, confirmed that he can be sued and I have seen it before. However, dunno whether successful or not.

What I am trying to say here is that it is better for the pp to be harsh here rather than kena from the customer regardless whether paid or not paid. The responsibility is still his. My cousin's wedding was taken by a professional photographer. He did not know that I am also a photographer. That photographer spoilt all the shots. Can u imagine how bad it was? Pics like 70s or faces are dark. The lucky thing was I took abt 60 shots and those are the gd ones only.
