All sifu(s), should i bring along a monopod or tripod for high speed action photography? Please advise.. Thank you everyone..

i usually leave the image stabiliser on as it also compensates for up down movement. i don't use a monopod as i feel it restricts movement.

better to shoot at walk around area. mine from last yr:

i used tamron 28-300vc. 70-200 i think should be fine.

Some pix I shot @ last yr's Formula Drift Sgp '09. So here's just a hand full of shots from me of the Top 16 shoot out on Sun, the skies opened up that only added to the spills and thrills.

All pix untouched, hand held on D3 with 300mm prime, only slightly cropped.

Wow 300mm prime, sounds very restricted. Did you have to keep changing lens? I can't imagine 300mm prime to be very versatile, although it surely has it's purpose.

I decided to buy 70-300mm lens on friday, so I don't have to keep changing lens. It does have it's problems at full 300mm zoom, so i'll limit it down to 250mm to be on the safe side.

From where I was shooting 300mm on FF is about right, I did have a 80-200 & 24-70mm f2.8 on the side to swap ;)

If so, free hand will be good enough?

Hey vince, were you shooting from the hospitality level where the judges were?

As for the question on hand-holding versus mono/tripod, hand-holding is definitely possible and, personally, I also find hand-holding easier as the cars aren't exactly travelling in 1 single direction all the time.

See you guys there! :)

no filters used. but i just bought a nd4 filter to prevent the aperture from getting too small when shooting slow shutter speed in daylight. :)

I don't see the logic in that. Using an ND filter should force the aperture smaller, eg from F8 down to F5.6.
Using an ND filter would require a longer shutter speed with fixed aperture, or smaller aperture with fixed shutter speed.

Must we use lens hood for that day or just a UV filter will do?

Not sure where the judges were but I was shooting from 2nd level

I prefer to shoot hand-held than monopod, more flexible as I do not like to be restricted with the pod ;)

errrrr no leh, the ND filter will require a larger aperture for a given shutter speed, so you have a shallower DOF and avoid going into the f/22 range and suffer from diffraction. f/5.6 is a larger aperture than f/8 btw

yes, an nd filter will force a bigger aperture given the same shutter speed. my aim is to get about f8 to f11, to prevent diffraction. :)
