First Impressions : Nikon D800

36mp is a big headache for me .. Memory card x3, harddisk space x3, ram x3, pc also must have 3 processor .. Haha

Estimated availability in spore is March 2012
price: TBA

(my guess is that 1st shipment will be limited in quantity)

ok, initial impressions are good

it is ever so slightly smaller and lighter than the D700
let me get some images to demonstrate

top21.jpg

i matched the hotshoe as best as i can

Approx. Dimensions
D700 - Width 5.8 in. (147.00mm) Height 4.8 in. (123.00mm) Depth 3.0 in. (77.00mm)
D800 - Width 5.7 in. (144.78mm) Height 4.8 in. (121.92mm) Depth 3.2 in. (81.28mm)

Approx. Weight (camera body only)
D700 - 35.0 oz. (995g)
D800 - 31.7 oz. (900g)

you can see that the left side of the camera is smaller
notice the angle of the shutter button and a new dedicated video recording button

Wah... NS allow you to shoot with your own CF card ah?

Just can't wait...

If you had shot any in f/22... put up the full res one so that we all know whether we can severely crop for specific parts in the pic.

the back

D800_back.jpg

main difference here is the bigger 3.2" LCD vs the 3" of the D700
the Live view button and live view selector
just above that is an ambient brightness sensor for automatic monitor brightness control

Viewfinder Frame Coverage
D700 - FX (36x24): 95 % Approx.

D800 - FX (36x24): 100% Horizontal and 100% Vertical Approx.
1.2x (30x20): 97% Horizontal and 97% Vertical Approx.
DX (24x16): 97% Horizontal and 97% Vertical Approx.
5:4 (30x24): 97% Horizontal and 97% Vertical Approx.

yes you can select to shoot in different crop factor (see above)
RAW format is only at full 36.3MP size, hopefully this can be selectable as well

Viewfinder Magnification
D700 - 0.72x Approx.
D800 - 0.70x Approx.

nope, the units there were prototypes, so the memory card door was sealed, my impressions was via pixel peeping at the 3.2" LCD

the bottom

bottom12.jpg

notice the different battery door, the D800 uses a EN-EL15 Lithium-ion Battery (same as the D7000)
while the D700 uses a EN-EL3e Lithium-ion Battery

Battery Life (shots per charge)
D700 - 1,000 shots (CIPA)
D800 - 900 shots (CIPA)

it seems that the rubber material was changed and now feels better.
not tested but my guess is that if you load mov files on the card the camera should be able to play it back, making it into a movie player too

let me dig out the pictures that i took
