I vote f80 too, F5 way too heavy.

Actually I'm leaning more to F65, (cheapest that can use AFs I think) coz it can use the D70 remote.

oh F80 uses NORMAL cable release, compared to the 100bucks remotes for f100.

Suggest you read what Ken Rockwell has got to say on the F80. Good point to point comparison with the F100. One big thing for me is the on-demand gridlines that we take for granted on the D70.

The F80 has the gridlines too.

Just for a cable release it's a good point to point comparison?

Anyway the MC-20, MC-30 can be used on the D100's MB-D100, F5, F6, D1*, D2* series. Good investment? I'd say so.

At least when he upgrades to his digital body, he already has a remote that can trigger the bodies.

F100 by default do not have the gridlines, but you can always upgrade the gridline focusing screen...

Personally i opt for F100 because of its weight, and most importantly - the removable grip.

Anyone else have experience with these two cameras? In particular, I'm curious about the F5s reputation of "eating up lenses"..

As long as you are using Nikkor lenses, u should be safe lah. If a $3000 Nikkor lenses cannot take the motor of the F5, then i don't know what can... hahaha

If i am u i will go for F100/F80, no point of going to F5 because shooting film is very costly......

to me i will only go to film if FM2/FM3 can take G lens...... wonder will nikon launch a full manual body like FM series where it can take G lens... or a converter.... :)

Oh, pardon my ignorance, the F5's grip is not removable?

Also, is the weight of both cameras (F5 and F100) with the grip about the same?

Weight of F5 is heavier than F100+MB15... F5 takes 8 x AA batts (by default) while F100+MB15 takes 6 x AA batts (be default). Trust me, once u get an F100/F5, u will leave your DSLR at home... (my D2H seldom see the light nowadays)

Hey Ansel... thanks, will check TCW out.. but for $1.5k couldn't I get a second hand F5 already? :dunno:

Yeah...you can get an F5 with that price too, but the F100 comes with the vertical grip which you can remove, and make the camera slightly more compact, when you don't need the grip. Flexibility is always good. BTW, the $1.5 is for 2nd hand, i believe you can bargain a bit in TCW.

Nope, F5 is like a D1*, D2*. The grip is built in.

u ask Nikon to make the convertor where i can use my G lens.... then i will shoot films and slides ;)

Thinking of going back to film too.

Fixed between the F80 & F100.
Will use mainly for landscape, still life & portrait.

wow, there is a film trend here. I might keep my F3 as well.

Haha....and yet you call yourself ricohflex ?

Sorry, just can't help this one. ;)

Anyway, my advice to you rat, is to get the F100. TCW has got a tonne of them right now going for ard $1.5k with the vertical grip. I believe you can bargain some more.

Hi,
Ansel

hee hee.... actually ricohflex is just a nickname. :bsmilie:
When applying for clubsnap just thought of my old TLR When young, from poor family, can only afford 1 TLR.
Got fond memories of it.
Actually now still poor. Saving to buy DSLR.....

I do have some old Ricoh rangefinders 500G, though...
Collect these old interesting stuff.

Highly unlikely since Nikon is focusing more and more on new digital bodies, wait long long :P

TLRs are wonderful cams! I got a couple.

Old stuffs are great, provided they still work. Cheers. :D

Sorry, OT OT OT..... :embrass:

Hehe, no problem Ansel.

Anyone else got any opinions on the F80 vs. F100 vs. F5? :)

I must say that I've heard a lot of good things about the F5's matrix metering, so I'm sorely tempted to go for that, but I'm not sure if it'll be too overkill for what I shoot. I don't need the 8fps since I don't shoot sports or fast action (besides, slide film is expensive  ).

How is the battery life/consumption of the F5 vs the F100. How many shots/rolls on average before you need to recharge batteries?

Oh, one more thing: given the cost of film and the shutter life of pro bodies like the F5 (which should be in the tens of thousands, right?) is it safe to say that I wouldn't have to worry all that much about the shutter count when buying a 2nd hand F5? What else should I look out for? Thanks ;)

You shouldn't think so much :nono:

Just BUY BUY BUY!!!!
