Traffic Police and LTA road planners need to re-examine this road junction carefully. This is a known accident prone area. Why is this so?
Any contributing factors in the way the road is planned?
Could the placement of traffic lights at this junction have been confusing to drivers i.e. both the Ferrari driver and the taxi driver thought they had a green light to go ahead.
Any need for road bumps to slow down potential speeding drivers?

They can tackle on another front. Expensive sport car drivers need to go for regular yearly talks and lessons on how not to speed on regular roads. Ethics lessons for potential errant drivers.
Because the natural human tendency is to want to show off in a fast + expensive car and speed. They want to emulate their fave movie stars and copy the dramatic movie car chases.

if those ****ers drive properly nothing needs to be re-examined bro.

If this was true, accidents would be happening daily, if not by the minutes :) In the day, that junction in Bugis is flooded with people & jammed with cars, accidents if they ever happened are small scale. Such serious smash ups usually due to drivers trying to beat the red lights & accelerate instead of slowing down their cars, drunk or not. Relatively empty stretch of road at night, traffic lights turned amber & not red yet, racing car that can go to 100m in less than 10 secs flat, pretty girl at the side ('malu" if slow down the beast quietly & obediently), .... all the ingredients to such a disaster. One can & has probably escaped it a 100 times but need only 1 time to be unlucky, when there is a car in the other direction in your path.

....Could the placement of traffic lights at this junction have been confusing to drivers i.e. both the Ferrari driver and the taxi driver thought they had a green light to go ahead. Any need for road bumps to slow down potential speeding drivers? ...

The route which the ferrari took is good for speeding.. it's a straight road w/o any bends starting from outram.. The route which the taxi took has numerous bends due to downtown line..

what a waste of time. actually there is no such thing as 'most innocent one'. all victims are innocent, period. but to drag someone totally unrelated into the picture is without scruples to say the least.

I prefer the latter - getting these F1 wannabes for lessons. ;p maybe LTA should consider those road bumps with spikes + sensors....any car speeding prior to traffic lights, specially at night, the spikes will come out and burst their tyres....

Just technical discussion.
If passenger and driver in F car wear seat beat, they should be all right ?
Those super car are designed with highest safety right?
Examples: modern F1 car crash, car body all gone in pieces but driver area well protected.

belt maybe being assemble in italy, but must see where the belt is made mah.

Frankly speaking i can never understand hatred for FT becos its the fault of govt policy and not FTs. People will naturally want to seek a better life overseas. The Govt have a duty to take care of its citizens, not FTs.....yuan yu tou zai yu zu .....

Also. it seems SEEMS like the Ferrari driver is at fault probably, whether he is a FT or singaporean....
people are quick to assume there is FT bashing or that FT are at fault..... both views are just as biased :P

But imho the hatred for the Ferrari driver , being glad that he is dead is wrong.... he should be punished , but not in such a way
such hatred shows the ugliest part of human nature , imho

I agree. The policies are what has caused a strain on our resources and our human nature.

Deadly weekend for Ferrari worldwide.

Just technical discussion.

Going through some rudimentary physics textbook calculation, taking into account several factors including but not limited to the mass of the Ferrari 599 Fiorano at approximately 1,688 kg and travelling at a velocity of 180 km/h etc. etc. You'll be looking at an impact force of approximately anywhere between 20 tons to 30 tons on the driver and occupants themselves from the high g-force experienced as a result of the rapid deceleration in a broadside collision such as this.

Even with airbag and seat belt, they can only do just as much. You may as well have Mike Tyson punch you in the face repeatedly with his bare hands.

The route which the ferrari took is good for speeding.. it's a straight road w/o any bends starting from outram.. The route which the taxi took has numerous bends due to downtown line..

I drive on that stretch daily & in the wee hours too. When you get the "green stretch", it's very easy to speed past 150 as traffic is non-existent except taxis. Looking @ the video, the guy probably shot through @ nearly 200km/h assuming it was travelling @ 1 car length per second. (599 is a big car, probably 5m long)

Just technical discussion.

Modern F1 cars have a carbon tub & designed to break apart upon contact to absorb the impact while the tub protects the driver & they wear the Hans system. Furthermore, F1 circuits have many run-offs & safety barriers to reduce the impact. Road cars that uses the carbon Tub technology now is the McLaren Mp4-12C & the Lambo Aventador. The car that crashed is a F599GTO with normal chassis, 3point seat belt & no roll cage. I don't think the factory even simulated the velocity that he crashed. Sigh....

Perhaps you can try & say that to the face of the wife & 3 children of the taxi driver or the relatives of the taxi-passenger who died... you may discover the ugliest part of human nature yet - those irresponsible people who caused all the pains & sufferings for reasons like pride, showing off, etc & those who seem to be inclined to making excuses for the irresponsible actions & its terrible consequences. Just my frank opinion.

hmm i think you misunderstood me just a bit,the ugliest nature i am talking about are other people who say that, those who do not personally know any
of the victims or anyone directly involved in the accident... whereas for the wife and the 3 children, i would think that if they feel that way, it is
still not right, but perfectly understandable, as long as they "think" but do not really go out and "harm " people to get their revenge.

yes irresponsible people ought to be punished i agree, but i would not say that wanting them to die is correct....there is a degree to everything
and not everything needs to be carried out to the extreme.

hope that clarifes.

Cheers!

and to add, since what happened has already happened....and nothing can be changed no matter what our opinions are,
instead of thinking yeah that someone should have died to punish for his misdeed, wouldn't it be better to think instead
that they should have all survived the accident and the reckless driver get punished or jailed or something.....just my two cents
....cos WHAT HAPPENED HAPPENED..... whether you think yeah good that he died or not... he is already dead... hatred will not do
anyone good.....especially if it is hatred as a pure emotion achieving nothing constructive.....

The motto for motorist is Speeding kills. The safety-first measure is when and where to speed.
Where - F1 When - when the road is clear

The screengrab above is 04:09:04. The crash occurred exactly at 04:09:21. From the shots, it looks like it is from the same camera. So this was the shot before the crash. The blue taxi (2nd car from right) has quite pronounced tail lights - probably the taxi did stop and those were the stop lights being on. The car on the rightmost seems to have made the turn right and so was not visible in the crash video. We need to see the whole footage but it seems that the taxi did stop properly at the red light, and proceed to move off at the green light - when it was hit broadside by the red Ferrari (which was so fast in the video that it was just a blur).

Thrs a video/GIF on the temasek times blog showing the uncle moving at green light and the Ferrari crashing not him
Maybe this video quality is better?

some background

The dead PRC driver of the red Ferrari was the brother of Ma Yong, one of the big mafia bosses operating in Chongqing. During the crackdown initiated by Bo Xilai and Wang Lijun on the Chinese mafia, Ma Yong fled to Guangzhou in the south.

The Straits Times of May 14 described the deceased driver, Ma Chi, as a 31-year old private investor. The latter never graduated from college.

According to some sources, Ma Chi used to launder at least 1 million of USD per month in Hongkong.
