Ok, with everything almost said and done, my last (and hopefully final) question would be....
Is it worth paying $350 for the 895, which is brand new and have never been taken out from it's box?

Like what Ckiang said, it will be good enough to make you go WOW as long as you don't do direct comparisons while staring closely.
The 895/870/1270 belong to the same generation and use similar printheads. The 830 is based on a newer print engine although it is admittably the lowest in the series.
I've done prints from an Epson Photo 1200(A3) and HP7150 as well. Lab prints on Fuji Crystal Archive do seem to have slightly better shadow detail, but that may be moot since I'm printing on a friends printer and the settings may not be fully optimized.
The key thing is that for 5R and below prints, it will be best to print in the labs.Anything larger, printing it on ur own printer is both fun, economical and satisfying.![]()

IMO, no. Although indeed its a good price for something with that array of features. However, these features don't seem that useful to me.

Therefore, cost per A4 page is $25/20 + 28/20 = $1.25 + $1.40 = $2.65.
In comparison a lab print of 8x10" costs $7, 5x7 costs $3.

Roll paper feeder, automatic paper cutter, Direct print.
The new Epson 900 doesn't have the direct print capability and automatic cutter but has a CDR print capability and the newer print head. It also has the larger T009 cartridges of the 1270/1290 series which makes it slightly more economical in terms of ink usage.
Don't forget the Epson 830 and HP 7150 for only <$239.![]()
Oops. Tot it had a manual cutter at least.Originally posted by ckiang
The 895 has built-in paper cutter? Thought only the new ones like 2100 has it.

I don't really need direct print you see.. just thought i could use it to double up as a card reader.
cK/Zerstorer, thanks for pointing so many things out about printers...Keep them coming!:embrass:

Wolfie, sorry for the late response but I am a 895 user.
For info, the colour catridges are around S$30 for each. If u intend to print more colour photos than normal doc, then it is ok. But if u print a lot of documents in B & W, then the answer is no.
U see, for the printer to print, u need both the colour and black catridge inside the printer. Moreover, the black cat is pretty small, so u can't really print much with limited ink. Don't forget, u will need the use of the black cat even though u are printing colour photo, so the black cat may run out pretty fast...
Another is print speed. The 895 prints B & W document pretty fast (for me at least) but I must say the colour photos is really slow, takes up to 8-10 mins to print A4 colour paper and 4R abt 5-6 mins each sheet. If u set the high colour resolution of course, say 1200 dpi. The qlty is very good, but then again only if u use good qlty photo paper.
Yes, the card slot can act as a reader, so u don't need to buy another card reader.
The pt is this, do u need direct print? If yr answer is yes after all the above consideration, then go get it. I will tell u as a user, the direct print from the card slot somehow is better than going thru the PC, even when u are able to adjust the DPI setting on the PC. I don't know why that is the case.
If u have further queries, pm me.
