EOS M: M for Mirrorless

Manage to purchase after getting a good deal.

So far so good and i am loving it. Maybe i am used to unique camera like Sigma DP1s and Fuji X100. (I own a couple of DSLR as well). I dont really find the auto focus slow. It really depends on lighting conditions.

To be able to put the camera into my pocket is something great. It does felt like a compact camera, though its heavier than it looks. X100 felt lighter.

Well though i hope that it can come with an EVF like Nex7, using just the screen is fine too.

The adapter is quite heavy, due to the solid metal mount. And even the small 50mm f1.8 looks huge beside EOS-m. The connection felt strong and it does work well.

It will be a good back up camera during shoot, and will be a good compact travel camera.

Doodah - Yes, there was no 'poor' on the rating scale, if I remember correctly.

All said, I agree that Canon could have done better on the EOS M as (a) they have all the time in the world to study the competitors' products and do better, and (b) the EOS branding is very strong and they would sell millions of the EOS M if they had delivered something with a wow factor.

Then again, it's always a challenge for big companies to come up with a new product that would cannibalise an existing product. Which is probably one reason why Canon is selling a half-baked EOS M to 'differentiate' itself from the faster DSLR line. But that's usually a short-sighted strategy as sooner or later, most companies in such a predicament would realise that it's better to cannibalise oneself than be cannibalised by others!

With lens attached even the 22mm one, it is impossible to put in my jeans pocket unlike real typical point n shoot cam or even the Sony RX100. Nevertheless, the EOS-M cam is I believed designed to be a fun camera to persuade ppl to venture into DSLR segment via the attraction to mount EF lens to try with it.
I tried it n felt very weird handling it. The AF is not as slow as I expected, definitely faster than my Galaxy SII phone cam. It is also pretty sharp when I tried with the native 18-55mm lens.

Ya... Quite huge cos i normally wear hiking pants. With good size side pocket.

Guess thats the smallest one could gets with a apsc sensor and a changeable lens.

If you to through his review for other cameras, he offen take pictures this way. Most cameras do not have problem for most of the time. If he is not able to take picture his usual way then you have to consider carefully if you like to take snap shot.

If canon release a perfect camera now, who will buy their next version?

kai's style is more zone-focus, sunny-16 street.
and he was very impressed with the om-d's and nikon 1's AF and less so with the xp1 (before v2 firmware). but u can see he was really frustrated with the eos-m af.

actually he was also having problems getting the focus locked with the touch screen for the guy who was leaning at the pillar.

Most of his reviews n street shots, he does remain stationary to take the shot. The AF is slow compared to a Canon DSLR but really not tt horribly slow as made up by some reviewers.

Yup. I do agree that he got not enough time to play with it. Every camera got their strength. E.g. Most pple with use zone focus plus manual focus on x100. And it provides a different shooting experience.

But afterall its back to one's shooting style and needs.

Other than AF (AF is not as bad as I thought), the build quality is great. Very solid feeling when holding it.
The images are same as the 650D. Very good to bring for travel instead of a big size DSLR.

This is the first mirrorless camera from Canon. There will be new or upgraded models coming very soon, like next year. The product life cycle will be very short.

For those who can't wait, buy now else wait for next year.

Before Nikon joined this megapixel war, everyone slammed Canon when they released cameras with 22 MP FF sensors or 18 MP APS-C sensors; pixel density was considered too high. Now that Nikon and Canon have swapped positions, it's interesting to see how people slam Canon for releasing cameras with low pixel densities. LOL.

No, the problem with the 5D3 is not its low pixel count sensor. Its problem is the stagnant sensor technology, a sensor with no improvement whatsoever in its low ISO dynamic range. That is the only flaw in an otherwise great camera. Take a look at the D800 LCD with its poorly implemented live view, or its left side misfocusing problem (finally getting resolved...). Those are big problems too.
