EOS M: M for Mirrorless

I hope Canon can get their act together: they must match Olympus contrast detect AF speed and put up a wide range of lenses. I am most tempted to sell all my Canon gear and jump onto the m43 bandwagon. The Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 (305g) and 35-100 f/2.8 (360g) lenses are beckoning me....

It is same feeling with me. Hopefully the next EOS-M firmware update can improve their AF speed.

But it took Pany 4 years to come up with the f2.8 zoom lenses. Canon's MILC is in infancy by comparison. I think a lot of people are missing the fact that the EOS-M is basically between 2-4 generations behind the latest MILCs.

I'm hoping they at least upgrade the AF with a firmware update. I really want to be able to use the EOS-M as a back-up system. Then I can sell the OM-D...

When Pana and Oly were making their G1 and EP1 cameras, the market itself is in its infancy. Now, few people are going to wait for canon’s infant system for 4 years to reach the level that Competitors like Sony, Pana, Olympus are at.

Or put another, 4 years late into the game, 4 years of possible research and development, and this is all they have to show? Surely they can’t be THAT bad at R&D. It is far more likely that Canon’s far to scared of cannibalising their DSLR sales and are deliberately crippling what could have been a market-changing mirrorless system. It’s this sort of complacent corporate mentality that will harm the company in the long run. If you don’t cannibalise your own product sales, some one else is going to eat your pie. I for one hope NEX & M43 obliterate EOS-M. If a hard-knock is what is need for Canon to wake up and actually give photographers what they want, then I really hope they will get it.

That's the reason why Canon will have new model(s) very soon. This first product is for Canon to test the market.

I believe this is partly because Canon is the victim of their own success. Their factories probably cannot cope with new products while demand for their DSLRs is still very high. They have to first build more sensor/camera/lens factories before they introduce even more products.

Having said that, I don't understand why they are struggling with contrast AF speed. There's no good reason for it except their driver has fallen asleep at the wheel.

No idea what you all are talking about, the EOS M is a good camera and the competition isn't any better. I would take it over a NEX and NX any day.

eos-m has been on sale in japan for a while longer than the rest of the world.
and besides, it's Canon.

why "Canon" make a difference here? It is just a normal consumer brand not a luxury brand like Leica

This afternoon went to cathay photo to get an M adapter for eos m for my friend. I tested the adapter with cathay's eos m and my 85L mark 2. I 'm happy with its af and fast for me. Considering to get one after this.

Fast?hmmm saw the digital rev tv review of it with the 85...kept getting lots of off focus especially backlit subjects n it was slow comparing to dslrs...even while he was trying to get quick shots..focus was quite off..by the time it was on focus the subject was gone already..quite sad to see it performing that bad with primes..although the 70-200 was ok..looks very awkward though with the lens n those audio equipment mounted in the hot shoe

Haha. Everyone has their own standard of what's fast and what's slow. LOL.

I did test it to shoot some item on display at cathay peninsula .. Snap here and there.. Not moving subject like human walking tho..
yeah somehow i like it.

I happen to have a chance to play around abit with this EOS-M, but as of now, my first impression is not good at all. Before I even start to evaluate other functions, the "Auto focus Speed" gets on my nerves already. I was really hoping that it would be almost as fast as OM-D, but (imo), it's focusing speed is only as good as those G1X and G15 that is right beside it... Kinda unusable if you are trying to shoot some moving tgts.

there are canon fans just like there are leica fans (and nike/adidas/toyota/honda/sony/samsung/apple etc). ppl will buy something just because of the brand. nothing new.

so i tested the eos-m at the canon photomarathon. only tried with native eos-m lens, the pancake 22.

Build quality seems pretty good, but it's a bit too small for my hands.
tested the AF - single center pt, no tracking - on stationary objects - slightly better than fuji xp1 w/ v2 firmware but definitely not the fastest mirrorless af out there.

I tried my hands on the eos m at Harvey Norman. It felt sturdy and well built and felt comfortable in my big hands. I was slightly disappointed in the slow AF thought it was using it's native 22mm f2.0. But on the bright side it did make it up for it's slow speed by letting you chose where to AF via touchscreen which is a plus for me. The price was a not unexpected of canon but I wait to see if canon will release a newer version or just do a firmware update to truly decide on buying it. This is just my 2 cents worth

Agree. retail Price?

Can you double-confirm this ?

Can you imagine how much advertising and marketing presence Canon must have in it's homeland when in our tiny little island, you can't go a day without hearing or seeing something related to Canon?

On the radio, on our buses, on our televisions, on our sponsors, the whole bloody Legoland.... Canon Canon Canon....

I tested it yesterday at the canon photomarathon. First impression, smaller than i thought it was! I kinda like the built and compactness. I agree it is not as small as m4/3 but i guess there is a limit to how small the lens can get for a apsc sensor in there. I tested the AF speed, it is definitely slower than my ep3 and takes about 1-2 second to lock on. The shutter lag however is pretty ok and acceptable.

Not sure why but i just feel it is good fit for canon user. Because once u have the adaptor, u can really bring it as a second body for stationary object and perhap video(never really tested it). The touch screen is acceptable and can be used quite easily (unless u wear gloves in cold country then good luck). I must admit, i am a pro-dslr user (not professional) and would treat this class of camera as alternative to travel light and not to replace DSLR (maybe now the image quality are getting closer but i prefer the AF and controls of a dslr anytime)

Coming from Ep1, Epl2, ep3 and omd experience, i think canon first effort is really acceptable. I think in no time, they will be as good as most of mirrorless out there.
