[emlee] Mar/Apr 2010 Japan trip

thanks orangedial. Your earlier thread helped in my planning for this trip.

Nice sceneries, very well done

Thank you lichtleiter

#29 rustic
A teahouse by the Hozu River in Kyoto, nearby Kameyama Park. The sky was quickly turning gray, managed to catch this with pockets of light shining through. Had wanted to stay longer to capture the Hozu River and the Togetsu-kyo Bridge, but the rain spoilt my plans.

Had very fickle weather in Kyoto. This was a slight clearing after a rain.

#31 Jang!
That is the sound they make when taking pictures. At the Path of Philisophy, Kyoto

#32 Toilet, where art thou?!
This was the time when the lighting turn good, and we were at a very strategic place between KawaraMachi and Pontocho. Unfortunately, we've held our bladders too long during the walk of Philosophy, and is in desperate need of one. Still had time for a quick snap of this mural.

First great weather of the trip. But Osaka Castle is not good sunrise location.

#34 Himeji Castle
This was taken on 28th Mar 2010. Had read in the guide books that Himeji Castle will be under going restoration work, and will have scaffolding for about 2+ years. The place was so packed, we did not enter the Castle.

#35 Kodama
This is probably my favourite shot of the Shinkansen Kodama. I love it's funny shape in front.

#36 Wallflower
Onward to Nara. More signs of Sakura blossom.

#37 Younglings
this is a young deer, kept in a fenced area in Nara Park. Deers roam free in the park, and they **** all over too.

#38 Nods
The deers somehow learned to ask for food. There are stalls that sells biscuits for 100 yen, to feed the deers. The deers will come to you and nod their heads, asking for food. Somehow I find that a bit weird and unnatural.

#39 Thief
This deer having a go at the visitor's food without permission. I caught a quick snap before someone alerted them.

Very lovely shots of Japan.. i wish i could visit someday too.. But hear from many that it's very expensive.

Great series of pictures especially those of Mt Fuji...and im subscribed to this thread too...

Overall ur pictures really give us the feel of Japan..

Very nice series you've got here emlee

For #36, I personally would love to see the blossom in colour rather than B&W.

#21 turn left, turn right
Taken from Shinsaibashi, these "bashi" shopping streets are a lot more interesting that the proper departmental stores.

Inspired by the movie huh? :bsmilie:

Frankly speaking, interesting composition but doesn't quite go with the turn left, turn right title. Nonetheless you do have an eye for nice shots. :)

thank you weisiong87, for your comment and dropping by. well, Japan is cheaper than Europe, almost same price as New Zealand - for the same amount of time spent.

thanks mimik07. I did at first, but for the coloured version, it is not so exciting. let me go back and post it for you to see. thanks for dropping your comment, appreciate a good discussion.

thanks, but not really because of the movie, the title is an after-thought. I had wanted a shot of many umbrellas before, preferably at the Shibuya mega crossing with so many people in so many directions. but as I learned in travel photography, you hope for the best, but you take what you get. take it as you see it, if you hesitate, the moment/weather will be gone/changed.

in this example, the original image in my mind is one of UWA at eye-level. instead, this was shot at 200mm, and i had to climb onto a MacDonalds banner stand to get an elevated view.

that reminds me, i do wish lowepro or whoever produce a camera bag with an aluminum (or whatever strong/light metal) skeleton that can be unfold into a chair, that can take a 80-90kg weight to double up as a stand to take pictures in a crowd.

Very nicely put. I've been trying to condition myself to feel less regret when the latter happens!

That's a distinctly niche market! :)

For the recent batch, 28 and 32 invokes a sense of calm and serene when I look at them. Have you tried cropping to lose the clip-on lamp on the right though?

Thanks Zichar. I think such a bag would be handy on local assignments too. Sure beats going around with a step ladder. And also good for a short rest for your legs. I just wrote to Lowepro on the idea, hopefully they see value in it.

You are referring to #32. Perhaps I will give it a try. It was shot at extreme "high tide" condition, mind not fully concentrating.

another example of HND application. this was a long exposure to make the crowds disappear.

I cant recall exactly, need to check. But I suspect it was 15 sec.

Just curious...what is the technique then to ensure that u are still sharp after 15secs? Im suspecting u cant stand still for 15 secs and be sure that the picture will still turn out alright? :dunno:

thx.

we did stand still for the whole shot. passerby were turning to see what is going on. small movements are still not too bad at this is UWA.
