Which would you chose??

Both are equally good lens. But why are u comparing a EF-S with a EF? 24-105 is a good lens for FF dslr. But 17-55 f2.8 can nv fit into one )=

Iirc this thread was a comparison between the 2 lenses with the 7D as a body.

This thread is comparing the two lens for Crop body..... :)

My major beef with the EFS 17-55 is the poor build quality. Image wise, I would prefer f/2.8 glass any day, but ... the shonky plastic feel of the 17-55 leaves a lot to be desired.

Even if there is IS...it is going to weight like a tanker...

Maybe the thing to do for the time being is to hold on to ur money and think carefully first..

the likely hood of moving to FF, versus the likely hood of using the range...

if its my choice, i would take the 24-105 as a daily lens.... and couple it with a fast prime.. not so much of a wide shooter.. so its fine..

After some thoughts.....I think I will probably zero my pocket to get the 60D and EFS 17-55 F2.8. Surprisingly my wife said "BUY"....Haha!!!

Actually I was thinking to get the 28mm F1.8 to pair with the 60D but after some deep thoughts, I guess a zoom range will be more practical....hopefully I will love the zoom coz I have been a 50mm F1.4 shooter....

Really wish Canon just simply go and refresh their ancient prime.....

The 28 F2.8 are much cheaper, and performance is not that poor compared to the F1.8........

Seriously my thought about buying the 17-55 is because I am carrying the thoughts of "Zoom may come in handy" but my heart goes to the prime, as I am a prime lens shooter. If I am going to move into the league of prime lens 28 F1.8, the Sigma 30 F1.4 will come into the picture as the price is very close.

I am very impressed with the 17-55 during the rental, sharpness is great on my 400D. Downside of it is the weight as I will prefer to travel light weight as being a daddy, I will need to carry the diaper bag...shopping bags...push the stroller....and not forgetting my camera bag. And recently my daughter has just enter the play school and I can foresee that will be opportunities for me to shoot and document her school life. There will probably be scenario like I can get to see her perform some dance and singing in school, so a zoom lens will be handy. My photography equipment is dedicated to her, and my flickr account is mostly her photos.

28 F1.8 is a love and hate because 28 x 1.6 is not really that wide after all but I do read good reviews and see great photos produced by it. I told my wife that I am going to buy the 17-55 but in my heart......Ok!!! I shall get the 28 F1.8 in the future....haha!

Camera brands seriously know how to tempt and seduce their customers, you gain some and lost some....and in the end you have to buy everything to be a winner....

Do you have a love and hate relation with your 28mm? Is the coverage suitable for a wedding table group shot....like a group of 10 people and you are just standing opposite of the table? I am not shooting wedding but I will meet such situations during family gathering.

so far the love is there.. the hate is not there la.. no reason to hate.. don't realy find myself in those situations where its too tight.. usually just move back lor..

there was once i was using a 50 at my church camp.. then ask a fren to take a group photo, then must ask him move back quite alot but its just a small inconvenience in these rare instances.. so with a 28mm its not so much of a problem.. unless you are really having a huge group.. if not.. ask them to stand closer.. squeeze together.. it also helps with the photo.. making it more natural and cosy when they squeeze tgt.. not so rigid n nervous looking..

Not everytime you can move back.... That's for sure.... and why I prefer 35mm fov... though it is not perfect either....

17-55mm is good for portrait.... at F2.8... it is pretty sharp wide open....

I had a debate on lens too myself, as I found I become pretty much more prime... and I concluded that I will have F4L Zoom and supplement it with Primes..... but I do not go L primes... but compact primes... like the F24 F2.8, F35 F2.....

If you going for portraits, I think your 50mm F1.4 is the best for this..... But if you need to take group... 24 F2.8 is another option... as it give you 35mm FOV... and this is my personal favorite.... so not sure if this is ok for you....

If you intent to get 28 F1.8, then, go for it.....

Well... Canon marketing works very well.... and that's we are all suckered in by them to BBBBBBB............ :bsmilie:
