I think you have a great combo... 5D & 7D and the lens combo....

Thanks Halfmoon, it really is best of both worlds :D

Still.... I think after getting the gears... must remember to go and shoot more.... ;)....

Totally agree  never enough opportunities to go out and shoot in my book ;)

There should be a national photography day where everyone has to go out and shoot, should also be made a public holiday as well. ;p

Enzeru... I think you did not catch ball here... We are talking about 50% of the Auto focus issue is the lens and 50% is the AF in the camera body..... :)

my bad~!! :bsmilie::bsmilie:

but i wasn't referring to your case.. i was just replying to the equation... hahha...

yup yup.. sorry we digressed~!:sweat::sweat:

No problem bro.... were are all trying to help each other out, and in bear's case, it is the AF system he is having challenge now... ;)

Haha bro, once the F2.8 bites you, you will only want to get F1.8 , F1.4 etc... have fun. I loved the 2.8 on the 17-55.. so fast, so sharp so gooood....

You got me.... now... I am looking at those Big F lens..... but still... review of Canon prime for <85mm are not so well.... that turned me off... and good for me.....

But aiming at a USM prime, the 85mm F1.8... I lost my 50mm F1.8 to a fall.... so now, bigger F is 35mm F2.... and wonder if I should get the 70-200mm F2.8 and skip the 85mm.... F1.8.....

But still.... I am not through with my lens yet... so still exploring this lens..... seems like no weakness so far when I shoot indoor... I know flare is one of its weakness, and yet to proper shoot out.... :)

i can recommend you a better and cheaper 3rd party lens like tamron 17-50mm f2.8. but if you insist on getting canon product, then i would suggesting that you would go for the 17-55mm f2.8 :) the 17-55mm f2.8 is the best partner for crop body. its much sharper than the 24-105mm and the ability to shoot in low light is really necessary. ;)

Hi Bro...

Thanks for your recommendation. I am aware of this Tamron F2.8 lens, and I did thought about it for a while... read some review, and saw the VC version too... and concluded that I need IS... and VC is no where as sharp as the Tamron non-VC.... I had some experience with 3rd party lens before, and need to calibrate... so I am concern about compatibility issues too.... since, I have a preference for Canon lens.... ;)

50mm L??? That's a cool lens you got there..... I am thinking getting a 85mm F1.8 when I have enough budget....... Wish they have a 50mm F1.4 with Ring USM.......

Nice buy man.
Is the range working great for you?
Or have you found it too short in certain circumstances?

Yea, its the 1.2L

The range is ok for me... Wish it could be longer at times, but I am fine with it.... Not a real big problem, and when I see the color, contrast and sharpest, it blow me away!!!! I am happy.... ;)

Still learning the weakness, and notice some flares and that's about it..... maybe will consider the hood....... now, trying to get to understand this lens more...... this lens made me addicted to big F zoom..... :bsmilie::bsmilie:

Just to share....

I have loaned the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 for a 3 day getaway at Sentosa, it is a great lens that produced tack sharp images with my 400D. I am really impressed by the performance but the weight is kinda pulling me down....it is rather heavy and not balanced with 400D. F2.8 is great but there is still some limitation with indoor lighting condition.

Seriously in a dilemma whether to invest for one........dunno whether to cross to EFS.:dunno:

You will find the weight more balanced if you use the battery grip with the lens.

I am using this lens with my 20D and 550D, both with grip, w/o issue.

Limitation because you didnt bump the ISO? I dont know about the 400D but the 550D can handle high ISO pretty well. 6400 should be still usable.

My rule of thumb is i rather get slightly noisy images than blurry images which i cant even use. Cheers!

PS: dont mind if i go off topic a bit, how much did you loan your 17-55 for 3 days? from where ? Sgcamerarental? Can pm if not convenient to say here.

I find that even with Batt Grip... on my 400D with 17-55... it is still front heavy......

Guess it time for me to move to the next level... haha........ :bsmilie:

60D or 7D.... let 4D decide... lol...

400D is best below ISO 400... Tried ISO 800 before.... and noise is pretty obvious... though if you do not print big, should be able to escape.....

I was testing 17-55 at night, using IS and go ISO 800 for a night scene shot.... pretty obvious when pixel peep... ISO 400 was not enough for me to capture that scene... but if 550D can do it, I hope the 60D can push up well.... then, will be tripod free.... hahah.....

I conclude that for 400D.... ISO 400 is the max... for me.... Maybe I should Canon 6400D and can hit ISO 6400??? Just kidding...

Yes...I do agree that 400D is good to keep up to ISO 400.

$70 for 3 days with Cam2Rent at Chinatown....it is a good experience to try it out before jumping in to buy one. Considering now....EF or EFS.......haha!!! Through the 3 days, I personally feel that the IS is a good function to have when paired with my 400D because of the off-balance weight which may prone to have a bit of camera shake. A bigger body or add-on grip should be able to balance it as mentioned by many CSers. The $70 is well-spent because I get to try out the lens and shoot loads of photos of my daughter at the pool and beach.....I was a bit kan cheong when I enter the pool with my naked 400D and rented lens.....if kena titanic....I die!!!! Hahaha

How much did you pay for the EF-S 17-55 F/2.8? I am tempted to buy...but the EF 16-35 L F2.8 is in my heart too....

Actually do you feel that the focusing has been improved after having this lens on the 400D? Through the 3 days of rental, I felt the focusing has been improved but maybe it is the F2.8 and daylight that improve the focusing.....

Honestly i dont see a point getting the 16-35 f2.8 if you're on a crop cam. Not only does it not have IS, it is has a premium of over 500 bucks over the 17-55 (both used). And it has a shorter range. The only reason to get it is for the L designation, which im sure the novelty will wear off pretty soon.

The aim is to capture good pics for rememberance, and not so much of the type of gear you have. Buy a appropriate lens based on your skill and budget.
