comparing a EF and EFs lens? Never go with EFs....

With all due respect, a comment like that is rather pointless aint it? NEVER go with EFs? I dont see how that is a sensible reply without backing up your claims. The TS obviously is not using a FF, so NEVER go with EFs seems wrong here don't you think?

How much did you pay for the EF-S 17-55 F/2.8? I am tempted to buy...but the EF 16-35 L F2.8 is in my heart too....

Actually do you feel that the focusing has been improved after having this lens on the 400D? Through the 3 days of rental, I felt the focusing has been improved but maybe it is the F2.8 and daylight that improve the focusing.....

I got it at around $1550+- w/GST.... AMK shop....

I would not say the focusing has improved... but rather, I think the body AF is the issue, but in bright light, AF with Ring USM is very fast....

For me, I compared the 16-35 and 17-40, and felt that I prefer the 17-40... one issue is the cost... I do not see significant advantage of taking the 16-35 over the 17-40 for F stop and range.....

Honestly i dont see a point getting the 16-35 f2.8 if you're on a crop cam. Not only does it not have IS, it is has a premium of over 500 bucks over the 17-55 (both used). And it has a shorter range. The only reason to get it is for the L designation, which im sure the novelty will wear off pretty soon.

The aim is to capture good pics for rememberance, and not so much of the type of gear you have. Buy a appropriate lens based on your skill and budget.

I compared the 16-35 and 17-40 reviews, and am not convinced of the premium of the f2.8 and image.... in term of distortion and pin cushioning.....

For me, I go for image quality, and I am sure the 17-55 would be better than the 16-35 in corner sharpness..... color and contrast should be close...... but with IS some more... only issue is the EF-S.....

I read review, and the 17-55 is suppose to be better than 24-105... and for FF, the 16-35, 17-40 24-105 all suffer from barrel distortion and pin cushioning.... and corner sharpness also is affected..... but on crop..... I think the 17-55 would be on lens hard to beat in IQ... :)

Totally agree on the fast focusing under bright light....very impressed with the speed when I was shooting at the beach in Sentosa during my retreat. Maybe it was a breakthrough from my 50mm F1.4 that comes with a micro-USM.....so I have not seen better results.

AMK shop as in MS Color?

By the way....during the 3 days of my rental, I realised that the lens will tend to slide a bit downward due to gravity when the lens is pointing downwards and the zoom barrel is not smooth when turning. Do you have such issues? Or maybe the problems are caused by the badly abused lens....

I am so tempted to grab a 60D and 17-55.....but my pocket will gonna be dried up like a desert and I will be eating bread......Hahah

I dun understand.. why?
Cos Full frame is the "holy grail"? :)

"Holy grail"......:bsmilie:

Haha....maybe you are right? Don't you think it is a desire to have a FF? Anyway I am hoping the lens will be able to use on my film SLR, so EF is the only choice....then who knows that I may have a FF in future...HAHA:bsmilie:

Hi Halfmoon,

I am stilling holding on to my 400D and the slow focusing is really killing me and making me miss a lot shots. Just want to ask if your focusing has been improved after using the L lens? As in the Ring-USM helps to speed up the focusing?

My 50mm F1.4 USM is slow with the 400D but I understand that the lens is equipped with a micro USM and not the ring type.

easy way to have fast focusing, and doesn't cost you anything: half-press to focus on an object of the same distance away, then when the opportunity comes, convert the half-press to a full-press. i'm using a ring USM which is faster, but still not as fast as the half-press technique. people who shoot formula 1 night race use pre-focusing, so this will be a useful technique if you ever plan to do a bit of sports-photography.

50mm f1.4 is one lens I am delaying till Canon come out a MK II with Ring USM..... it MM motor have a reputation too...... rented lens, sure kenna abused... Let's call Society for Prevention of Abuses to Lens.... lol....

Mine was not very smooth too.... but still ok.... so far, no sliding downwards yet.... maybe after I abuse it some more.....

You have to plan your budget carefully if you want to get this lens..... I will not eat bread for a lens.... :)

Hi Nathaniel,

Thanks for the tips...Yes I am aware of the half-press technique but it may not be applicable to me at times because my photography subject is mainly my active daughter....and with shooting wide with 50mm F1.4, the focus will be a miss with such techniques... I think for sports, we can some how predict the location....

Please correct if I am wrong....:)

Waaahh....if thats the case, the rented lens must be badly abused to be in such state.....I dare not ask the owner when I return the lens coz he may think that I damage the lens......

Bo...bian...loh......just gotta sacrifice my favorite wanton mee or fried beehoon for breakfast to buy the equipments....:bsmilie: The satisfaction comes when I see nice photos of my daughter....

Well..... as long as you are sure of your lens, and am certain that you will not regret at all... then, go for it and join the 17-55mm IS family....

I wish Canon have a C class... Classic lens = L for EFS maybe..... hahaha...... Now, I am reviewing my photography and doing more reading and hope to bring the best out of the lens.... ;)

Yeah, i was really happy with the IQ on the 24-105.
the pictures were unedited, except for the first being cropped off the sides a little.

well, okay for sports i guess it's easier to predict the location of your subject (compared to your daughter). on the other hand, i've taken photos of kids running around indoors with a borrowed Tamron 17-50/2.8+flash before (3 days of shooting), as well as my recently purchased 17-55 w/o flash (just half an hour of shooting). photos were mostly okay, though not every single one. i think with my 17-55 i got better results by using only the centre AF point to lock the focus, and then recompose the picture... but the wrong focus is a camera body issue (or the problem of having too many objects around indoors), not a lens issue.

i guess getting the focus right with a f/1.4 lens will be even more impt due to the shallower depth of field (compared to an aperture setting of f/2.8 or f/3.5).

Yes....I mainly use the centre AF point and recompose and somehow I do not know how to use the full range AF (9 spots).....

Both are equally good lens. But why are u comparing a EF-S with a EF? 24-105 is a good lens for FF dslr. But 17-55 f2.8 can nv fit into one )=
