Seeking advice. I have an EOS 5 (film) and 28-135USM IS. If I wanted a digital equivilent, options are:

1. buy 'cheap' EOS 350D and 17-85 USM IS. However, if in future, FF becomes cheaper and I want to upgrade, I will have to buy not only a new body, but my 17-85EFS would be useless. So total spent, 2 bodies and 1 lens.

2. Buy 5D. Although initially expensive, it already FF, so won't need to upgrade in future, and don't have to buy a new lens either since my old 28-135 works as intended. Total cost: just 1 expensive body.

Thus would it be penny-wise pound-foolish to take option 1? Better to just bite the bullet and buy the 5D?

Any advise? Thanks. Backgound: I'm just a casual shooter, but like FF for better 'background blur' and wide angle.

buy the 17-40 f4L

Ok.... the price of the Full Frame DSLR is not a barrier.

Lets say that the 1DsMk2 costs 2,000.00 & the 5D costs 1,500.00 I am sure that a LOT more people can now afford those cameras,...

Let's say that the D2 suddenly came with a FF option....let's pretend they have a "D2F" body...and a "D200F".. at the same price points above......and then throw on a pair of FF bodies for KM & Pentax too..

IF they were offered, & to cost only this much,..would you want a Full Frame DSLR, or not..?

:)

If that day will to come, almost everyone will jump ship to FF bodies except those bird shooters who need the crop factors. Having said that, I am sure these bird shooters would also buy a second body (FF) as a spare.

Unfortunately, economics are always the prime objective for both the business and consumers, there a different markets for different makes.

Based on manfuacturing and marketing processes, the FF option will always be more expensive then the crop option, regardless of brands.

So there are markets for FF when preceived value of the FF is justifiable. There are also market for those on shoe-string budgets where the croped version is more justified.

Why do you think that Canon till date did not price the 1DsM2 @ 2K, or 5D @ 1.5K? I sure that without direct competitors Canon would that effectively corner the entire DSLR market if everyone wants a FF.

want? yes.
in fact have.

need? no lar.
20D good enough, if not more than enough.

price will become less of an issue over the years.... as prices come down or salaries go up ;p

But what happens if the reverse were to occur?

Do you think that the reverse will occur?

Nobody will predict accurately.

But one thing for sure is that this year, most people will have higher salaries and fatter bonuses.

Prices of DSLR or FF DSLR will drop over the years, that's for sure.

but when the prices of FF drop...how low will the prices of 1.6x or 1.3x camera become?

comparing a full frame DSLR with the oly e-system which is also full frame but smaller sensor, which one is better?

I personally think in the future the smaller sensor will be better. 3 years down the road, the pixel density will increase by quite a fair bit and olympus can probably make a good 10+Meg sensor, I would rather have lighter lens than a 20+Meg camera with heavy lens.

The trends in electonics has always been towards smaller... doesn't make sense to stick to the big sensor format even after one has gone digital.

people want FF for the wide angles...oly system the crop factor seems to spoil all the WAs..especially the 1.6x...and i dont think canon will make more ultra wide angle lenses...and you cant get it at f2.8constant.

Its not just about MPs, how about low noise high ISO (without compromising details), and high dynamic range (especially at high ISO as well).

ultimately how high a dynamic range you want? How high a ISO you want?

Currently I am pretty satisfied with my oly E1 ISO800 after using neat image. I do wish for 10MP for large prints. But beyond that, do you REALLY need ISO3200??

I personally NEED lighter lens. There is not much chance that canon full frame lens will get any lighter but there is plenty of chance that oly can produce a 10MP sensor with good ISO1600 within the next 2 years.

As for wide angle, I agree that olympus should have a affordable wide angle... I really wished that they have a 18mm (35mm eq) lens that is around 1k... like all the 12-24mm lens on 1.5 crop factor bodies.

Same for television... I mean after you reach 1920 by 1080 HD resolution, is there ANY POINT in increasing the resolution? Once you reach 5000:1 contrast, is there ANY POINT in increasing the contrast. What I am saying is sensor technology will improve rapidly, sooner or later the advantages of FF sensor will not be so apparent anymore. Then all you have is a HEAVY BULKY outdated system

Hmm.. But then again, the title of the thread is "do you WANT" not "do you NEED" a FF DSLR..

Right on... Each of us got our own individual needs.... i definitely want a FF DSLR, but Nikon doesn't make one. And I dun dig canon's wide angle lens.. so what to do? Continue to shoot film.

and may i add that there isn't a full frame fish eye lens for the cropped sensor.

looking thru the lens of my just bought zenitar,
wow! the full frame body is no horse run,
whereas my beloved 20D is very,....
don't know what to say.
