I like the look on their faces especially if the tripod costs more than the PnS.. ;p
Such wankers give me no end of amusement. I really do think that they have a massive inferiority complex that can be only be soothed by having the most expensive and the latest gear - just so they can lord over the rest of us. I mean, with the exception of certain specialised needs like professional sports photography (where high burst shooting, high ISO performance and super quick AF), what other situations a cheaper camera could not possibly handle?
I buy a camera that suits my shooting needs. I'm sure all them fancy features are nice to have, but why pay for features that don't use?

Don't worry about them dude.... Equipment is only metal and plastic, it is the person behind the camera. Give a experienced camera guy a basic camera and a inexperienced fellow the same thing and see what results come out. Tried that and tested that method before.
Put it this way, you should be the one laughing back and talking aloud to yourself..... "haha haha so big and expensive camera and so much gear to shoot street photography??! Afraid that people cannot spot u??!"
Cannot believe there are idiots like that who think just because they have expensive gear, they are top notch photographers?? For all you know, they rented the camera or are still paying off weekly instalments for it...... jeezzz
Honestly a good photographer worth his or her salt mostly started off with something small and simple and they get their skills from there. When they are good then they advance to something higher end not because it can give them better photos but because it has more capabilities to let them do what they want to do. The fellow who thinks just using a high end camera will give them solid photos is sigh......

I have a friend who went through media studies down under... and in a photography class project, they were told to use only disposable cameras! Also, I was reading a book on photography, and they said that to train photography skills, a suggestion is to use a simple camera with a fixed 50mm lens... and this has been a real challenge and inspiration for me to work on. Some of the best pictures do not come from sophisticated equipment

As you can see so many CSers support and encourage you, including myself. Most CSers here are really helpful and care for the hobby or craft of photography.
Yes, I have encountered such people who are real show offs and I usually put them in the category of "Equiptment Masturbators". Those who think equiptment really can take the perfect professional shot each time.
No worries, just ignore them.
And if those guys are reading the forums here, someday, somehow you and your group of lens strokers will be shamed good and proper!

I am still using my D70 and will carry on doing so till it stops working maybe someday. Sure I could buy a D200 or some other new "flavor of the month" this is a far cry from the time I use to own the F3 right up to the F5 pro but those were film and I was really into photography more intensely and professionally due to my work in graphic design doing inhouse shooting.
But since jumping over to DSLR...I guess I could upgrade but I see very little reason to.For one thing the resolution for my inhouse shooting is enough, colour correction and cropping is via Photoshop..and if I shoot privately during my leisure period..well it more then enough for me to exercise my creativity. Yes it is an older model and might have abit more limitation to the newer ones but then again I can still express myself within those limitation. There are so many avenues and styles in photography. True some would need the latest and 'best'est to get it done ) but so what if you are still getting as much joy with your dinky old 'click click', This included SLR owners too.
So what? Whether I have money or not to keep upgrading equipment..does that matter so much? As I told my friends ever so often. When I have money everyone want to share in it but when I don't have any, everyone act blurr about helping me out. So I feel the same way about equipment too. At a time when I felt like buying an F5 I buy it for whatever reason I might have and if I want to stick to my 350D or D70 or Prosumer Sony S7 or FG..that's my choice and I don't feel inferior for doing so. NOR WILL I go about judging others either for using something less newer or better. What's the point? Sometime it is just better to spend the money on other things, hobby or just save the money in your bank.
And I certainly will not care what some sh*thead or peer group who you are unfortunate to bump into who looks over and give you that smirk and throw in some bigot remark about whoes equipment is bigger, longer or hairier. Dont let them spoile your day out shooting. There will always be a screwed up parents squirking out yet another pathetic child or two as screw up a mentality as they are to annoy us all. It takes all kind man. Walk away. Nothing you can do since justify beating and murder is still illegal here in Singapore hehehehehehe.

Hee heee .. Something on a similar but jovial lines. During a recent photoshoot outing, all my buddies carrying fairly good gear compared to mine which is a recently acquired 2nd hand minolta 5D. They kidded me a lot. Again they are my friends and it was done in a jovial and friendly way. The results ... well lets just say me and my buddies are all newbies and the difference in our pics were not significant enuff to mention. Dont care about equipment. Just enjoy your hobby dude

A different viewpoint guys - just because someone uses a point & shoot or a fixed lens compact does not mean that he is not serious about photography or he cant afford better equipment. Priorities change as we grow older. Take the case of a parent - he takes his kids out on weekends & he brings a P&S along (It is impractical to lug along all those equipment when u have 2 kids in tow.) What is important is he is spending quality time with his kids (and capturing spontaneous memorable photographic moment ) whilst indulging in his hobby. Only thing is now he needs to adapt his skills to getting similar results from a P&S when he compares the pics to his DSLR

But if these people laughed at you soley based on your equipment, they are so brainlessly wrong. Dont worry dude, 300D is a really good kick ass camera, cos i've won few awards with 300D and I really love that camera too. I've even won an award using Canon G5 back among other ppl using DSLRs before (in 2005).
It doesnt mean that they're so pro or so godly just because of they're holding MkI or L-lenses or something like that. It only says that they've got money. Keep shooting... 300D rocks.

even if they laugh at one's poor technique and are not wrong about one's technique being poor, that is still rude. so to me it is not a matter of whether equipments are important or not, it is a matter of whether one has the right to be rude to a stranger.

In the not so distant past (last year?) when I was still using my dad's 6 year old Sony F707 for outdoor shoots with friends, I had similar experiences too...
It was near Christmas and I was with a friend taking street shots in the Esplanade (my friend using FZ7) when a group of guys toting expensive looking tripods and Dslrs walked past us... They oogled at our equipment and giggled and gave us the "go home la..." look...
It was an offensive move to satisfy your own ego needs when someone does that... I don't see the point in doing it for the whatever satisfaction they gained.....
Now that I've moved on to D80, I realized that the best way when you meet other photogs on the way is to SMILE at them regardless of equipment, cause in the past you were using low tech equipment too... I learned to be humble as I progress in photography and dat should be the way.
