5 min is a lot for a single scene....I seldom see a movie with more than 5min in a scene shot...:)

I used to take about 6~9 minutes for my children's stage concert event.

Looks like I'll have to take in lower resolution mode since there's limitation of 5 minutes for HD resolution.

Yeah, really love the ability to isolate the subject to create that film movie look (the sample movie of the lady walking in front of the green trees shows this quite well) - something you can't do with consumer level video cams with their 1/3" sensors.

Also like the ability to take documentary videos of macro subjects at 1:1 magnification or extreme wide-angles with a fisheye or something.

How about bellow or endoscope? ;p Would love to try the 135/2DC for movie.. Ultrawide will not be a problem also with Sigma 10-20 and FE 10.5DX. Zoom is covered by the 18-200VR as well.. I'm really excited about this camera more as a movie camera. Maybe they should take out the mirrorbox, the pentaprism, the shutter etc, up the movie resolution to 1920x1080/24 and make it cheaper. ;p

DV is 1h at 720x576 PAL or 720x480 NTSC. So 640x424 is not much smaller.

At the price mentioned by the cichlid, I WILL find means to upgrade from my d80 provided the autofocus is faster on the d90 (though the specs indicated similar autofocus module...) and the iso performance is on par with the d300 (aka 1 stop better than on the d80).

From the reduced shutter lag time of 65ms, it is squarely in the middle of d300 and d80. And the fact that it can shoot 4.5 fps makes it a very good contender with the d200.

And of course the fabulous D-Move mode, although future nikon and other brand cameras will sport this new feature in the years to come, which will be better than that on the d90.

Darned... I got a Canon 450D in May to take better pictures of my baby girl... now I want to switch to Nikon coz of the video-capture...

Darned...

Trying to sell the 450D now... who else is in my shoes?

It's time for me to upgrade my Panasonic DV camera to this. ;p At the same time I can take great stills with this too. ;p

Haha! Yup i agree with you.

If i'm considering an upgrade from a d80, it will only be the d90 vs d300.

My concerns:

AF - Obviously d300 will be faster 3500 vs 1000... not too keen about the many af points but just the speed of the af using the centre af point.
ISO - SEEMS like the same noise quality control. If it really is, it will be a boon for those looking for a better iso control camera in the nikon family.
Resolution - both the same using the expeed processing. BUT d90 only 12bit vs 14bit of d300...argh!
FPS - 4.5 vs 6...honestly don't require so fast. but 4.5 fps is VERY good!
Handling - I prefer the ligher weight d80 over the d200...so the same can be applied to d90 vs d300.
Shutter lag - believe me or not, but i can feel the difference between a d80 and d200's shutter lag, and when shooting events, the discrepancy is painfully realized. d90 is halfway d80 and d300
Viewfinder - 100% on the d300 vs 96% on the d90. Not much diff.
Upgradability - D80 to D90 can resuse the 3rd party batteries, battery grip, SD cards....etc etc...

In all, I really feel that the d90 is a very legitimate upgrade choice for d80 users and for those who wants to move up from the d40/d40x/d60 series and also for those from point and shoots.

Is it possible to change aperture during video recording?

Can we use Manual lens for video recording? May be no auto exposure, but can we record in M mode? Hmm....

ONe more difference that bugs me:

d90 can't have metering with manual lenses, but d300 can...

Speaking as a landscape shooter, with immediate review of what you shoot, you can always adjust after the 1st shot. But then again, if you are shooting The Moment, then its difficult.

Luckily I don't have many MF lenses. One more diff is that D300 can do AF correction for individual lens while D80/90 cannot.

That I don't know.. If cannot then it would be a big limitation. DPReview mentioned exposure is fully automatic in D-Movie mode but exposure compensation is honoured. My feeling is that aperture should be controllable otherwise it's hard to control the DoF like what it's advertised to be able to do.

yah, I only read that camera settings can be made b4 shooting..so hopefully can still adjust Aperture during shot. And if manual lenses can be used to shoot in M mode then I can buy the cheaper 200f2 (or like) to shoot video since its MF for video anyway.:bsmilie:

If manual lenses can be used, then you can use the aperture ring to adjust the aperture too, right?

How do download har? All in Jap, cannot understand...:bsmilie:

Need some DL key...

Most of sample movies from the D90 have been converted into flash movie format for display on the web. Apparently this is a .avi movie directly from the camera

http://home2.dip.jp/upload100_download.php?no=2907

pwd is D90

haven't downloaded it myself yet
