Hey bro... Just did a simple test for u. I tried firing at a distance of 40cm using Viewfinder and Liveview. No probs for me. At 30cm, could not fire off in Viewfinder. Managed to fire in liveview using auto focus but this is how the results looks like after some slow focusing.

yepp yepp taken from Nikon Website (Under technical specs):
Closest focusing distance 0.45m (through the entire focal range)

Haha don't worry too much bout this. U just have to learn to accommodate the kit lens! :)

WOOO hey guys...just got my D90 yesterday!!!! Super happy...got the 18-105mm kit+50mm f1.8 and sb-900(although its very bulky and heavy..its Power~)... Getting the travor batt grip later!

A noob question...my dad has an old nikon F80...comes with 28-105mm lens which works perfectly on my d90....but between 18-105mm and 28-105, which is better??

Anyone here did wedding shoots with their Kit lens or any specific lens, care to share your experiences? I wana go into wedding photography soon..

Hi all,

I am new to D90 too and its also my 1 SLR not to mention DSLR :)
have been using with the kit lens 18-105mm had already invested in accessories
like dry cabinet, tripod, bag and now looking for a lens for portrait taking.

Had gone thru the forum here to look for 2nd hand lens.
I had tried once on a manual lens 50mm F1.8 taking the pics was fine but the shutter settings, iso, aperature are not save into the pic file and i also notice that there is a FEE once the lens is mounted. tried remove and remount still same. but once i fit in my kit lens everything is fine.
Anyone can tell me if there is some lens that is not usable in the D90?
Things like AF-S, AF-D,AF-IS what part do they play?
Or does the D90 only takes lens with the AF series?
Tks :)

Have recently upgraded to the D90 after trying out the D40 for a month... Felt too limited by the limited AF on the D40. Quite happy with the camera so far, plus buying second-hand (approx $1.2k) made it pretty affordable (with warranty left summore).

Currently using 18-55mm VR kit lens and 50mm f/1.8 lens. Thinking of upgrading my kit lens to the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. Anyone has advice/opinion regarding that? My friend suggested getting a second-hand non-motor version, is there any difference for the D90 between motor and non-motor version?

From what I understand, more or less every Nikon lens is usable on D90 (with exception of some really old ones). But I think for noobs like me, stick with AF lenses because manual focusing is no joke (I've tried, and suck at it)...

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/nikortek.htm gives quite a good explanation of the lenses. Or you can look at http://www.bythom.com/lensacronyms.htm for a fast summary.

I have noticed something interesting with the D90. The camera interprets the colour purple as blue.

Hence, I would like to know if there is anyway to fix this issue?

U worry too much mate.
You have to understand that every lens has a minimum shooting distance. If you would like to shoot close (or even to the extent of macro), you gotta look @ either a new lens or add in some close up filters/adaptors/etc....

What you should be focusing on now, is to bring the cam out and start shooting away.

Wow... 1 shot buy full package. Hope your interests can last you long enough.

you can't compare both lenses off the shelf direct. Both are different type of lens even though they may lie within the same range. 28-105 is equipped with macro capability.

You wanna read up on equipment, there's always www.kenrockwell.com

FEE error occur coz you need to activate the aperture lock on the 50mm lens.
shift it to the lowest aperture f/22 and lock with the orange tab.

D90 should be able to take most lenses... only a matter of whether can MF or AF + got meter or no meter.

MF is a skill that requires practice. The more you use it, the better u are.
AF is not everything. There will be situations that require MF...
So, it's up to you to choose.

practically anywhere is a potential spot for shooting.
You can start near... like your home, neighbourhood.

Or just grab the cam and head downtown / city and start shooting away~ ;)

go out and try then only you'll know what you lack of... my first few weeks having the camera was a very busy month... go out shoot... go back home review... not satisfied then google for techniques and tips for improvement... go out and test out all those techniques and tips then go back review again...

the cycle continues until today... 5 months after i got the camera in hand... so happy shooting and happy learning...

Haha...take kenrockwell with a pinch of salt. He can one day sing praises about something and the next day put it down until its worth nothing. No harm reading for an opinion, but he's not THE authority on Nikon stuff. You (users) are.

hey hey... just got my 50mm... time to start playing with it =p

About the 50mm... Is it a must to set lock the aperture?? Cant we manually choose the aperture?? sorry...very new to this lens..

Are there any way to get rid of Fee while still being able to manually play with the aperture?? Or if its not possible then, could you offer a simple explanation for me??

Thanks guys..;)
