Hi everyone :) i would like to ask , any 1 here using 16-85mm or 17-55mm F2.8 lens? if have how u think of this 2 lens?

currently im using D90, 18-105 & sb600

I have used both lens and the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 BIM. I prefer the 16-85 more than the other two. Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 no doubt it's the best Nikon DX lens but the weight is something i don't like the lens for walk around. The Tamron is on par with the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 but sometimes it give me some mis focusing result on those low light situation. I acquired the 16-85 recently and bring it over for holiday in HK & Macau with 35mm f/1.8, this 2 lens combination is perfect for me. The sharpness of these two lens really amazed me.

hi ijnek & Dwenz76 thanks for the reply and info, seem like 16-85 is a gd choice :)

hello guys, I think i have problem with my focus. I got no idea how to check.

You're being very vague here. Care to share what are the problems? :)

when i press on the shutter button it dosent focus & the box dosen't light in red. Sometimes it focus but most probably it dosen't.

Confirm tt it's in AF and tt you half pressed the shutter button. If it doesn't AF, it may be because your camera is unable to acquire the subject. Had this problem in the past.

Know your minimum focusing distance and ensure tt your subject is not one of a low contrast with the BG. Turn on the AF Assist Illuminator as well.

sorry... but if you explained it properly and more thoroughly, it would be easier to figure out what you're trying to say.
Pls help us to help you :)

Is your subject on the move? As ZCA stated, you have to help us to help you. It took me 2 full minutes to read what you wrote, only to understand a bit. No offence meant

It's kinda hard to figure out what is being asked, but I suppose it has something to do with the point of focus being different on the 2nd time that he/she half-press the shutter release.

Well, if some general wide-area AF is used, and there are 2 objects within this area at different distances from camera (eg. 1m and 2m), there is a chance that first half-press, the 1m object is in focus, then half-press again the camera might decide to focus on the 2m object. Nothing strange what... camera is trying to guess.

Could be because some lenses take time to focus...they rotate all the way back and the bounce back towards the front... slow to "search" I suppose?

ok. sorry about that. Im using a D90 with 18-105mm lens. I suspect my AF is having problem, I got problem in checking weather the AF are working properly. Im using Wide area AF with the subject 1m away(not moving). when I tried half press to focus it sometime show the red focus dot on the subject, sometime not. Another scenario is I use all 11 focus point on the subject it use 2-3 focus point randomly the non-moving subject(1m).
hope you guys understand. :)

Yeah it's KRW, I know...
If you're using wide area AF, and you half press the shutter release, and the camera locks focus on your intended subject, why do you release and then half press the shutter release again? That might confuse the camera into thinking you wanna focus on something else.
Sorry if I misunderstood your question. The words you choose are a bit confusing.

other than this,...i catch no ball abt the problem...

I believe he's talking about the AF point selection. For D90 it's... 11 points right?

What I think ducky88 is saying is that when using the wide-area AF mode (i.e. you let the camera intelligently decide which focus point to use), sometimes the camera chooses the correct focus point (i.e. the 'bracket' on top of the subject blinks red) and sometimes it doesn't (wrong 'bracket' blinks red).

hope I understood it correctly.

ok...ic his point now after reading again...

case study 1)
when I tried half press to focus it sometime show the red focus dot on the subject, sometime not.

case study 2)
Another scenario is I use all 11 focus point on the subject it use 2-3 focus point randomly the non-moving subject(1m).

this is probably not a problem of the AF.
rather the IQ of d90. it can't read ur mind on what u wan to focus, but rather will determine it on other factors.
use manual selection so tat u tell the d90 what to focus
