erm say for instance you are shooting at 200mm, a safe shutter speed to use in order to prevent handshake blur would be 1/200 sec at least. But this is only a general rule of thumb. Also this only prevents handshake blur, but not the subject's motion blur,so if the subject is fast moving and your shot still comes out blur, make the shutter speed faster

multiply by 1.5 to be safer :D

 BBB virus alert. :bsmilie:

TS, even a kit 18-105, or even the 18-55 is a "good" enough portrait lens. depends on your style (whether u want the bokeh, or u always go f8-f11 as in studio shoots, full-body or tight headshots, etc) and your budget (50mmf1.8 on the low end, f1.4 primes on the high end). even the 70-200 f2.8 is a good portrait lens. once you know your shooting style and budget for portrait, the choice for lens becomes easier

i want the bokeh portrait shots...

70-200's IQ, bokeh, compression.. all are excellent in taking portraits. we are talking about portrait, right? nobody said portrait means it's a wedding shoot. you can mount on a tripod right? subject can sit or stand 6 feet away. still considered as portrait, right?

this is a portrait shoot/workshop. and wouldn't you know it, he's using a 70-200. :bsmilie: and if you can recognize the shooter, he's very good at taking portraits as well

and here's a video of another workshop of his. he even uses the humongous 200 f2.

Well, he's a bigger size than any one of us here, hence 70-200 + D3 is like D300+70-300 to us. :bsmilie: Btw, that should be the VR1 version.

Edit: we take in 1 kg of juicy delicious steak and call it a day... They take in 1kg and ask for seconds... :bsmilie:

then you'll need a large aperture lens. f2.8 or lower. if you can get the f1.8 or 1.4 lenses, they give smoother bokeh. and primes are usually sharper than zooms. :)

there are also other factors in getting good bokeh other than aperture, like distance of subject to shooter, distance of subject to background, etc.)

Focal length can also be taken into account. With a bigger focal length there is less DOF

I can also ask for seconds.... is 1 kg alot??? :bsmilie:

that means if im shooting at 30mm the SS should be at least 1/30 and i have the option of bringing up the SS to like 1/60 but not go below like 1/15 etc?

I guess tt's right. :)

hmm that means cant shoot in aperture priority right? i should try to shoot in manual mode? cause if shoot shutter priority cant adjust the priority. sensor smarter or human smarter? haha.

Hmmm... I don't know leh. I haven't really been using A, S and P modes. So I can't help you there. Sorry.:embrass:

Just got myelf a Nissin Di866..

D90
18-105mm kit len
50m 1.8D
Nissin Di866 flash
1 excited man... :)

how about Manual? ;)

Er... I use a shutter speed that I feel I can handle without a tripod. I usually hold my breath when taking a shot. Same concept as shooting

You can still shoot in Aperture priority. I shoot in that mode most of the time. you can choose your aperture you wish to use, and if shutter speed is too slow, bump up you ISO :bsmilie:

wah the how you control your SS and EV?
