D800 User Thread I

Just wanna ask, does the left AF issue affects any users here? The more i read about it on DPreview, the more hesitant i become in wanting the D800.
Does this only affect the D800 or both D800/E? I don't mind spending that little bit of extra once the supply stabilises to get a proper working camera. I have already sold all my DX gear.

I did an unscientific test on the left and right AF of my D800E using Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G. In both these images, I focused on the numerals "16-35". The one with the manual to the left of the frame is focused using the leftmost AF point and vice versa for the one to the right of the frame.

In both instances, the focus seems acceptable.

At this distance, the variability in the two AF points appears to be only in millimeters (if any) with the aperture wide open.

With regards to the card speeds (for both SD and CF) did anyone do tests whether the premium speeds made any noticeable difference?

I don't need to keep the shutter depressed for 4-5 fps, but may need 1-2 fps at times, and found that it reaches buffer full at maybe 18 shots. At max fps, it started buffering at around 12 shots. All shots in RAW. Was using Sandisk SD 95MB/s.

If shoot with RAW files in 4 fps or after shot previews is almost the same.

Maybe for CF can stand up to 12 and about without buffering?

Hi, do you know how to set the shutter speed over than 1/60s when using the speed light.

I notice mine is a bit blur on using the 180mm prime.

Because no VR.

Should be set e1. Flash Sync Speed?
Cause the e2. Flash shutter speed only reach 1/60s.

Nope I mean if using the pop up flash the shutter speed can be remain as 1/60s when low light, if need set above 1/80 or 1/200 shutter speed. Then shall I set in Flash Sync Speed and used the Auto 1/200s ha ha.

Its somewhere in the settings. I just scrolled around and found it. Can set to 1/250s. Sorry don't have exact directions coz don't have the cam with me now but you should be able to find it by scrolling around or from the manual.

If I did around 1.5 fps, its about 18 or so. Definitely less than 20. Expected more than that leh.

Overall, almost same rate of filling up buffer when shooting on D80 even on slower SD card. Yes, 36MP vs 10.2MP, just want to confirm if I'm missing any special setting here

Based on my experience, this seems about right I.e. raw and SD extreme pro.

two days with this camera... can say that to get a very very good picture.. really need faster shutter than before. My work flow timing now really increase by 3-4 times compared to previous D90 files. But once in, the adjustments and everything else is still smooth.

Noise is surprisingly well controlled for a 36mpx. And agressive Noise reduction applied the details are still there! ISO 6400 no problems at all if you are not viewing it at 100%.

This camera in Good light is super!! Images are crisp and sharp.. avail light need to improve on technique.. no chance to bring it out yet, now thinking should I bring it to Sydney next week.

Nope lah, cause I got both cam, D7k & D800 sure click more on D7k new thing should have slowly ha ha

how does the 16-35 perform on a D800? Sharp?

I agree with JacePhoto. Visually looks quite sharp, but whether it is sharper than other Nikon lenses, I'm not sure. Haven't done side-by-side comparison under exact same conditions. Ken Rockwell thinks it's very sharp. But here's an image taken with the 16-35mm handheld at ISO100, 1/200s at f/7.1 for you to see for yourself.
