D7000 Discussion Thread II

I believe NIkon is a good reputable world class company in Japan.. but not in this country. We consumers should not shy away from arogant service staff/engineers/bosses/.. after all these people survived on our purchases.. Dont be timid.. go confront them if they are trying to get away from selling us a lemon...I hate to see these companies trying to behave like those freaking banks...just profit..profit.. and we.. suckers ..suckers..

FYI to all potential owners or owners of D7000, NSC has made it clear to me (I swore to him that I'm gonna quote online what he said to me and he dared me to do it and I'm doing it now.)

If the Hot Pixels are not 'deemed' obvious to them or under their level of threshold, they treat it as a common issue and will not warrant it. (Video or Photo (especially with NR on). The kinda of threshold they're expecting is daylight "normal" shooting (which i seriously wonder what is night photography about) with few hot pixels and visible to naked eye. It does not matter to them how many days or hours or minutes u've bought the camera. This is their company policy. (thinking of which, i forgot to ask them for the complete list of company policy. Everything must have black & white if he's so 'obedient' to follow policies)

For potential buyers, PLEASE CHECK the video/photo for hot pixels before accepting the product because Nikon WILL NOT service it at this point in time. The best they can do is remap which they claim that its not guaranteed. If mapping fails, there WONT BE an exchange.

Btw, is there any email or feedback channel that I can use to feedback to their boss?

Sorry to hear about your problem with NSC. I can understand your anger especially those who makes a living from it.

I am glad I decided to wait as I kind of anticipate possible issues in the frenzy rush for the first batch. It is a good camera but the first batch is having teething problems.

The behavior of the NSC staff is NOT acceptable and all will do good by writing to appropriate Nikon staff. Their email addresses are given in an earlier post.

Hope to find some US and Japan contacts too.

My firm stand is within a period of 7 days, we as customers have a basic right to ask for a one to one exchange.

Hope everything turns out OK for all affected customers.

:confused::(:sticktong

Hummm... If I leave the len cover on and switch on live view... I don't see any dots, is that the way to verify?

Try iso 5000, expose 5 sec, caps on.
Mine can see starting at shutter 1/30 at iso800 caps on.

Thanks for that... will try that later.... cross my finger...:)

After all the reading, are those hot pixes happens only in "extreme" conditions? I tested mine and I personally find it "acceptable"... maybe I am not a pro....

During day shooting, I don't find anything unusual... :embrass:

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. Frankly, as a professional (not professional photographer), I won't tolerate such nonsense such as policy. If there's a defect, they should jolly well resolve this issue.

I don't have a good experience dealing with their local Instrumental product sales team already, I certainly don't want a similar or worse one with their Imaging product team. I suggest you go straight to their Chief supervisor, Mr Sim.

Btw as mentioned previously, mine do not have such problem during photos, even long exposure such as 8 sec in almost total darkness. I suspect the NR kicks in well, which I'm cool. The video one has a blue dot (obvious) at 12 o'clock from centre, and I suspect it kicks it at around ISO 800. I guess mine is at the very border of their so-called 'threshold'. Even if I bring in, it'll only end up quarreling. :(

Yeah, certainly should be no hot pixels for normal exposures (as opposed to long exposures).

Not familiar with videos, but if there are observable hot pixels in normal videos, seems to severely handicap the function.

I saw the hot pixel at the top left hand corner of my unit when switch to LIVE view with the lens cap on... one red one blue.. and I saw the blue one in my videos(no matter bright or dark)... not that irritating but of cos would be good not to have them I guess.. so far I am fine..

Did test shots from ISO200-6400 of long exposures with lens cap on... the red and blue dot came out at ISO800... did 1min exposure ISO200 no dots(is that considered ok?)..but usually i dont use ISO higher than 200 for long exposure..

I also did the long exposure for 10s, varying ISO from 100 to Hi2.
Hot dot appears once ISO heated to 800. and many stars come out in Hi2.
So I think the usable ISO is 800. The High ISO NR works, that remove a lot of dots, however they are too many. Anyway, I can accept the performance in low ISO, but why D7K offers such unuseable high ISO setting.
My video is worse. I can find many hot pixels blue or red, and three of them are always on, and others are blinking when cap is on. Even, I just remove cap and point to dark area, the three hot pixels are easily observed in LCD. So, I can not accept this. I will go there, but I am quite busy now. So sad.
By the way, is it possible to hide them by software or update firmware.
Oh. Thanks

Just a minor update: I've got a reply (email) from them, which I emailed out before I made the call. (I'm not point names)

This lady asked me to bring it down to their service centre and they'll try their best to help me.

Btw, increasing ISO = heating up the sensor, which will results in hot pixel. Also, their manual indicates that there'll be hot pixel if the sensor is hot. The way to remedy it is to let the sensor cool down. It makes sense wrt the phenomenon seen in my video.

The question is, 'How much tolerance you have towards the hot pixels?". It's determined not only by individuals, but also how bright is the hot pixel, and how many are there.

It depends on individual...?
For me, I dun think 5 seconds, f22 iso1600 is extreme for night shoot.

Day shooting should be fine. Except low light indoor, let say iso1600 1/30, u might be able to see hot pixel in d7k pictures like mine. Pray hard my replacement set will be ok after pixel remapped.

Good luck to you...

It seens that everyone is having the problem with their D7k... I think if I bring my D7k down, I can just give it to them without saying a word and they know what issue... save my breath.... ha ha....

Tested mine a minute ago.... got one "green dot" on the lower right corner... I think I have to tahan with it first... no time to send it to NSC for remapping...

Can bro here tell us what is the "fixing" or "One-for-one exchange" time? 2 days? or One week? Thank you... :)

Simply put.. Nikon Singapore or anywhere for that matter can step forward and acknowledge the perceived faults and suggest remedies.. they need to be upfront to consumers to prevent misgivings. As consumers, we need to be clear about the specs and not demand performance of a lower product to perform like their higher ends.

But again I am sure the Nikon camp is reading this forum..or should have hear wind of the pixel issues.. directives are always given by the top..reckon its time for them to rethink that consumers are no push over..

You're 101% right!!!

Hi jackychua, maybe I am a "upgrader" of D70, not even D70s... so I am very happy with my D7000 so far... cheers! ;)

dam.
Called I photo already, they said no stock. and suggested me call Nikon.
And they said it is no meaning to change another one if this happen on everyone.
OK, I called nikon and a lady told me I have to bring the camera to NSC and show them.
Oh, too bad. I have been using Nikon camera for almost ten years.
I can't understand why Nikon rush to release this model if development have not accomplished.
That did waste time and money.:thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd:
This is Friday, so I only can go there in Next week.
Can any body tell me how long will they fix it.
I rush to buy it, because I will take photo in my bro's wedding at the beginning of Dec.

Yes. Body only set is available, i.e. In gold box not a break set from kit set. However, there are very limited sets available to all the dealers. I knew a friend collected his from Cathay Photo.

I don't think you can get it at $1,650 w/GST, atleast not now, I think it is more of a wishful thinking. D7000 is very hot now in US, constantly go out of stock almost immediately everytime the shipment arrived. If you can get it at $1.7k you should grab it now before it go out of stock here too. Important thing is that you can start enjoying your new toy now like the folks here.

Guys, you should not be paying more than $1,650 after GST for D7K without kit lens at this moment. Don't be chopped by shops that seem reputable.

Did you manage to get a set at $1,650 after GST?

I agree with Kopiroti that you should grab 1 if its going at $1,700.

Hihi,

Wish to know where can I get the set with $1650 inc gst?

Just got a new exchange set. I should say...
The camera is ok after remapping at the moment, still got one hot pixel after remapping but not very obvious.
So.. Conclusion... I tested 3 sets, 1 at iPhoto, I bought from iPhoto, another 1 exchanged from NSC, all 3 are suffering hot pixel on still image. Not sure whether we can conclude that none of the d7000 in the market is hot pixel free, or worse?

And most importantly, not every set can be fully fixed by remapping. This included the 2 sets that had been done remapping on my hand.

NSC service... I should say the front line is bad, trying to fob off most of the users by saying that it is common. But my case was smooth and speedy after handled by supervisor. Thumbs up for the supervisor service.
