D700... which walk-about lens ???

35/2 and 50/1.8 (One lens on camera, one in pocket!)
35-70/2.8 if you can find one - one of the best zooms Nikon has ever made. Much overlooked, especially after APS-C DSLRs took over market.
24-85/2.8-4. Not a bad zoom lens.
28-105/3.5 Mentioned above. Hope you can find one...

Realise too that all your Hindu temple shots have that brilliant blue sky, quite surreal

I bought my D700 with 24-70mm F/2.8G. I thought this is it! Until I carry this around the weekend. Then, I have the exact same question as TS. I spend 2 weeks looking for a lighter alternative. Obviously, 24-120mm VR was my first find! However, after doing more research online, I found the 24-85mm F/2.8-4 ( with 1:2 macro ). I bought it overseas for $790. ( Locally selling for $1090 ). I have been using it for a month now and no turning back. It is a great lens that I will high recommend it to you!

Hi do you have any photo of the 24-85 shot wide open at 24mmf2.8 & 85mmf4 with 100% crop. I would like to do a comparison with the 28-105mm that I have.... the 28-105mm need to be stop 1 stop to get razor sharp photo, wide open it's a little soft.

Sigma's EX coating is always disappointing.
Why does Sigma persist with its EX coating when nobody seems to be appreciative of it? But please correct me if I'm wrong.

from what I read, this lens is overpriced and not sharp enough.
I agree with Playlens; I also thot with 24-70 put me to a stop at least for quite a while. This combo is quite heavy to walkabout :sweat: Anyone considering Tamron 28-300mm VC? or using could share your views?
I'm actually quite keen on this Tamron since it's focus length could cover most common range of photography and it's pretty light weight too.

The 28-300 Tamron Lens is currently used by Thom Hogan as his "walkabout" lens.
Check out the section "Personal Comment" in his review of the D700. He's got other lens recommendations for different purposes too eg. Landscapes, wildlife,.. etc.

He seems to be getting a dead battery symdrome problem with the D700 and the Tamron 28-300 lens. However, somewhere else on his website, he did mention that he knows of other photographers who do not have the same DBS problem.

Which walkabout lens...
Really depends on whether your priority is lightweight convenience or good quality shots and large apertures (both for shallow dof and higher shutter speeds).
I shoot with a FX camera (D3) and find the AFS 24-70/208G very useful for most walkabout situations (both indooors and outdoors).

My preference is picture quality. My "walkabout" is therefore D700 + 24-70mm/2.8. No MB-D10 in that combo to save some weight. I even carry the 14-24mm/2.8 in my waist pouch, just in case a situation calls for a fanciful wide-angle

Looks like Nikon will be making a new lens to cover this gap soon, a sharp (ED+Nano, etc) lens for FX with VR, slightly longer range, but it will have smaller aperture than f2.8 (constant f4?) since we want it light for walk-about. Hopefully by December holidays,
otherwise I will be forced to bring my DX + 18-200 VR.

Agreed with sf_kang and originalsin where quality is one of the key concern; just that thinking a lighter lens if I need to walkaround for long. Anyway, I still couldn't decide to get the Tamron or not
The Tamron 28-75 is much better optically than the Tamron 28-300 lens.
Here's a few samples of my Tamron 28-75 on my D700. This is currently my "walkabout" lens combo. I recommend this Tamron lens because it is optically sharp at f/2.8 at a wide angle of 28mm. It is sharpest at f/4 at all focal lengths. Even at F/4, I could snap a picture (see photo 2 below) without the use of a Flash in low light situations.
It's got the lightweight (500g), small and compact, sharp lens quality and low light capability for a walkabout lens.
