D700 user...fall in!!!

Any one tried the Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG MACRO HSM with the D700? Any comments?

I've used it with the pre-Macro & it's decent, focuses fast. The price of the one you're asking is close to Nikon's well rated 80-200AFD 2.8 (non VR) which I'm looking for now & holds better value IMO.

Hmm... why did you buy D700 in the first place when you don't have the budget to get a proper lens for it?!?

I suggest selling away your D700 and get a D300 or D90 and have the extra $1K to get a good set of DX lenses.

What you mean by proper lens? Is it only 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200 from nikon is the only "proper" ones? Which only D700 should use? And the rest are just not proper?
Then nikon should remove the motor drive (since all proper lenses are with SWM) and design a special mounting that can only mount this 3 lenses and those nikon lenses that cost more then $2K....:bsmilie:

mavericktan2000 did already budget 1K for his lens. May not be enough to get those top of the range ones but still will able to grab him some good lens... like Sigma 24-70 f2.8, Tamron 28-75, 50mm f1.8, 35mm f2 85mm f1.8...... , he can either buy new or in 2nd hand market. The choices is even more if he is not looking at those fast lenses. These lenses may not be as good as the 3 holy grail, but they will still do the job well, and to me also consider as proper lenses.
Given the good motor that D700 had build-in, it can drive the non AFS lens rather fast and accurate during focusing, so he had more choices for 3rd party and Non-AFS nikon lenses then those using D40...

mavericktan2000, D700 is a good body, just work with your budget and get something that is usable for your style. If you got no lens right now, just go grab a 50mm f1.8 and start enjoy your camera. 50mm is a great focal lens for full frame, B&S is now flooded with this lens, ranging from around $150 to $180.
Enjoy!

Is the 80-200AFD still avaliable in the market or only in B&S?

"proper" means the lens that he/she wanted to get and is having problem to get it due to budget.

Really, what I am ranting about is: why even bother buy a $3500 camera body when you know you will have problem getting the lens/lenses that you want. Previously he/she owned a D40x and then made a big jump to D700. Now, realized that there is not enough fund to get the desired lens.

put yourself in his/her shoes.. budget is $4500.. what fraction of it should go to camera body and to lenses.

in the long run, it's better to downgrade the body and buy good set of lenses than to keep the D700 and go with cheaper lenses. that's all I'm saying and I'm sure you'll thank me for it in the long run.

I see many people got excited buying the latest greatest body without planning to get good lenses for it... what a waste... anyway, these are just my 2 cents

hmm... after following this thread for awhile...

Wondering afterall ... it is worth getting a D700 experience ...

I am from the Canon camp and is considering to grab either the 5D II or D700 ?

I am mainly using for events photography and at times travel ...

Hmm... now i am in deep deep dilemma

I jumped from Canon EOS 5D to Nikon D700, but then again, I was a Nikon film shooter for many years and just wasn't used to the ergonomics of the Canon.

I'd really look at how I would lose if I made the move because changing system can be both bothersome and draining on the finances. Look at your current set up and calculate the actual cost of the upgrade, e.g. if EF-S lenses are your mainstay, then no real difference if you change to 5D MkII or D700, but if you own a series of EF (or EF L lenses), then I'd stick to the Canon system as the investment cost is the price of the body.

Cheers!

After reading the thread, thought I'd put in my 2 cents' worth.

I simply LOVE my D700. As a Nikon shooter since my teens (FE, FM, FM2, FE2. F80), it was very simple to work the D700 controls. I pretty much figured it out and started shooting really quickly.

I had previously avoided DSLR because of the small sensors and full frame sensors cost too much, when I finally relented, the EOS 5D was the only affordable option. But 4 months into using it, it spent more time in the cabinet than out shooting because I just found it too difficult to handle (different strokes for different folks), so I took the leap and came back to the dark side. Made losses on my EOS investment, but I'm shooting more often now.

The mirror slap is a concern, sometimes I wonder if it will break?

I use the MB-D10 when I mount my AF 80-200 f2.8D (still in shops the last time I browsed a couple of weeks ago) as I find that it provides better balance. It weighs a solid brick, but my OP/TECH Pro Loop strap does the job of distributing the weight nicely.

However, my biggest joy of my D700 is the 50mm, I've re-discovered the beauty of 'normal' photography. For my last trip to Western Australia, I only took my 18-35 & 50 and the 50 spent most of the time mounted on the body.

2nd biggest joy is the viewfinder... it is HUGE and such a joy to use especially after installing the eyecup.

Anyway, to those who have invested previously on the DX system with a collection of DX lenses, I'd stick to it as the sheer cost of moving over to FX is a killer, unless of course you hit it big on TOTO or 4D.

I will keep my D700 and start looking for some nice AiS prime lenses as I may get a second body (FM3a or F3)...

Cheers!

Thank you guys!

I think i should go with faith then ...

Though my investments on Canon are not relatively high ... a couple EF lens and gears ...
but i tink my move over to Nikon is purely on the superb low-light condition handling power ...
especially on D700 !

Hope my investment will be a good experience after all !

Cheers

Hi Ppl!

Another D700 user here! The reason I got the D700 is not so much about upgrading from my previous D200 but more so about the Full frame factor... I hated the crop factor, felt constipated. Full frame was like a breathe of fresh air, able to take subjects closer and get shallower DOF while maintaining lens performance at apertures like F2.8 without losing the shallow DOF and also have better communication with your subjects. 50mm felt like it used to during the film times! I use mainly primes and love it, but not willing to spend much on zoom lens as I seldom shoot events, hence I now face the dilemma of unable to get a decent cheap standard zoom, coz the Nikon 24-85mm F3.5-4.5 seems to be sold out! Worst case scenario for my upcoming wedding shoot, borrow the lens from my friends, haha!

As mentioned above, the reason for me is not about upgrading but more of changing the crop factor format to full frame. Dislike crop factor DSLRs unless its for extreme telephoto like sports and bird photography and maybe macro, all which I seldom do. Crop factor is less useful for me.

Welcome Fujiwara

Welcome to the Dark Side....Fujiwara

And have a Happy Birthday!

Thank you thank you!

It is indeed a very HAPPY day with D700!!

Hi Fujiwara,

May I know how much the D700 costs you? And you got it from which shop?

Thanks.

Anyone interested to organize or participate a D700 share and shoot session?

Can I suggest that you start a new thread rather than "stealing" this thread? I think it will be more appropriate. ;)
