D600 User Thread II

Well, maybe it worked before anyway... :P

Ya ur right... I tried before upgrade and aperture changing works before upgrade.

I got confused with not being able to change aperture in LV movie mode

Actually I never shoot movies and if I would do I would never change the aperture while shooting anyway. It's a non-issue for me. However, if I had to I would rather buy a lens with stepless aperture control on the lens itself.

Anyway hows the 18-35 for u so far?

Im thinking of getting another lens for traveling. Im hoping to go for convenience (& light if possible) without spending too much.

So my shortlisted are nikon 18-35, 16-35, or tamron/nikon 24-70.

16-35 would be good for sight-seeing during travels and the 35 end can shoot some portraits. the 18-35 will be a cheaper alternative (albeit still not very cheap @ 1k) with 2mm lost at wide end and variable aperture. VR is prolly not an issue. Im still thinking thru if these are worth another $600 over 18-35.

24-70 is another lens im considering. It is big and heavy, a lot less wide. 24 is prolly enough for many sight-seeing/landscapes shots (of cos wider the better, and not only for landscapes :p), with 35 - 50 good for portraits. is 70mm any use during traveling? Besides, the 24-70 can be used in many other areas like street/events when im not traveling. Also not sure if i shud get nikon or tamron for 24-70. Seems like tamron has some AF issues and hunts a bit in low light, but other than tat its a good lens. The nikon is blazing fast but very $$$$!

Having headache now.... Haiiii. Anyone got any suggestions? Im also open to suggestions for other lens.

It's always an easy decision if you know what you want. The AF-S 18-35mm is perfect for me. I don't like the 16-35mm's IQ, it's heavier and VR is useless for me. The 24-70mm is too heavy anyway and the Tamron one isn't my cup of tea at all. ;) The lenses mentioned are so different, it should be easy to make a decision.

Anyway, never trust someone recommending a lens he owns himself.

It depends on how many lens you are willing to carry and what compromise you are willing to take.

A working combination that i have rented was the Nikon 16-35mm f/4 VR and 50mm f/1.8G. In the end, i did not bring this combination overseas because i knew i was going to do something specific during the trip and i brought along my own 2 workhorse lens instead.

If you like to shoot in UWA and is concerned about the performance of the 16-35mm at its widest, look at the prime lens out there offered by Samyang and Zeiss in this focal range and take along an all prime setup (24mm, 35mm, 50mm) or add the 24-120mm f/4 to complete our lens luggage with 2 lens.

With regards to the 16-35mm f/4, the actual hands on performance is not far from the MTF graph as well as the reviews given by the usual suspects so i suggest you give it a try. Rent it or test it out at the shop (so take note that the 16-35mm is a popular lens, could be sold out and needs pre-order).

You need to know and understand what you're aiming for when you travel.

My combination included
- 17-35 + 10.5 FE - for highly scenic locations
- 17-35 + 24-70 - for scenic + street shooting
- 17-35 + 70-200 - for scenic + street events

As I acquired the D600 solely for the main purposes of backing up my D4 + travel, this month's trip I've targetted to bring the 17-35 (lack of funds for 16-35VR now) and 50 f/1.8 along without the grip.

Tested yesterday this combo, seems fine so far, will see how it goes on real travels.

I visit my friend's shop in funan when time permits and i hang around the shop for a few hours. I have chatted with customers (tourist and locals alike) who come in and for Nikon users, the 16mm to 35mm zoom lens coupled with a 50mm lens is quite a popular combination that can fit in most travel needs.

The benefits of such a combination is quite apparant in the context that in photographing lanscapes, 24 to 35 suffices in covering most landscape and cityscape and in really tight situations, the UWA FoV comes in. For street life, portraits, when using a 24 Mega pixel sensor, it gives opportunity to crop and still retain more than 10 Mega pixels. Although a compromise, it may just work in the favour as opposed to carrying heavier and more bulky equipment like the 24-70mm. This is especially so when travelling with family and children or when means of locomotion excludes driving.

Just sharing experience.

Haha thanks for all ur suggestions and advices. I guess for me, its a case of needs vs wants. The 16-35 is what i need as i shoot wide more often than tele. But the 24-70, being such a reputable lens with fast AF its just tempting!! :p pardon my swakoo-ness but i have never own such a lens with this AF speed...its awesome just to feel the focusing lol

I guess ill go with my needs. I had loved both my 11-16 on aps-c and 35 on FF, and having both in one lens would be great! I can sacrifice a bit on losing the bigger aperture and carry less load while i enjoy my trip :)

24-70 is fast, but also a very heavy piece of glass. I would have loved the barrel exterior finishing from the 28-70 being brought over to the 24-70.

24-70 + speedlight + camera + grip = wrist pain.

Hahhaa yea ur right. Fun is one thing, but to carry a 1kg lens all day is no joke. Not to mention how ur heart starts to pound when u pass ur $2k lens to locals to help u snap a photo :o

AF speed makes a difference only when it is needed and that would refer to street life (in the case of 24-70) especially when light conditions is challenging. Yes it is tempting but like you said, it is more a want than a need.

Photography (at least to me) is about getting the shot now and also in being able to travel to/and get those shots now.

Hope that you can get what you need and start photographing.

Cheers,
