Just got my D600 back from NSC. They told me the waiting time was 3 weeks but I got it in 8 days, with the shutter replaced. Keeping my fingers crossed that this is THE solution. I am keeping my faith in Nikon ... ;-)

Sensor is clean (and stays clean) now?

I haven't heard from anybody with a new shutter unit who got a spec free sensor now. Shutters got replaced already for months. Maybe Nikon changed something just recently so let's wait...

Yeah. Something changed very recently. As far as I've been able to learn from Nikon (and they have been rather closed-mouthed) the new shutter mechanism was only rolled out a couple of week ago.

My camera is at NSC now, I'll keep everyone posted.

Aiyo ... Just got my D600 back today and of course it's still clean. The question is not whether it is clean or not. The question is how long will it remain clean ...

Yeah and that's why I asked the question you quoted.

I too got my D600 back from NSC today. They rang me and said it was ready for collection. It has a new shutter mechanism and the few pictures I took looked OK. Spots all gone. Will monitor and update the thread here if the dust spots are back. Aside from this, I am happy with the camera. I encountered some AF hunting problem when in low light situations but I am thinking that is perhaps cos I got spot focusing on and maybe it couldnt find a bright enough focusing point exactly at the spot it was focusing on. Will switch over to multi point focusing to see if that is the case with the low light AF problem. The shutter would not fire even when depressed if the AF is off. I got around the problem by switching to manual focus and I could then fire the shot.

I did think about upgrading to a D800 especially when my camera was in NSC but I think I don't need the features and higher resolution offered. Camera bodies go obsolete in a couple of years anyway and I might as well save the $1K difference for a better lens or at a later stage for an even better body when its time for replacing my D600.

Take care all. Happy shooting.

• If a high percentage of new D600 owners sent in their cameras for FOC shutter replacement, it may mean a loss for Nikon.

• It will tempt those owners who have little spot issue to ask for free shutter replacement after long period of use, claiming they got serious spot problem.

• Would anyone know or will Nikon announce that after serial # X, new D600 will not have any spot issue because they have the new shutters.

I got my D600 back from Nikon today as well. The repair invoice says "Sensor Cleaning" then "Refer to service advisory, replaced shutter unit."

Sadly, when I got it back there was more dust on the sensor then when I brought it in, but maybe somebody forgot to do the sensor cleaning and just replaced the shutter.

I have a couple photo shoots planned this weekend, I will let you know if the dust comes back or it seems to be fixed. I expect there may be some extraneous dust still rattling wound the shutter area, so it might take a bit to all shake free and be blown out....

Looks like the wait is over for those waiting to buy a unit - if this is indeed the fix.

Why is that?

If only more people understood what owning a DSLR is about...

got mine back, shutter replaced too.
will see if this works

Initially they mentioned that it would take 1 week. And then they call me after 3 days. I got it back clean yesterday (I bought mine sometime in October last year by the way). Similar to bulltier I was also thinking to shift to other brand or upgrade. I really got frustrated when I saw the spots on the pics I took.

It would be bad for them if the problem re-appears. I'm sure Nikon doesn't take this issue lightly. Today they made a call asking some 'customer service' questions (ex. Whether I'm happy with their service, whether I'll still buy Nikon and so on). I'd still buy Nikon.

That's what I was talking about earlier. Shutters got already replaced right after the dust phenomenon started last year. Singapore might be just a bit slow...

The wait is over -

Can buy now if changing shutter solves the problems

or

Shutter changed, problems remain, what next? Nikon has any ideas? No point waiting, there are other alternatives. :bsmilie:

Now the "problem" is D7100 released, except the sensor cannot match, all other features are better than the D600 :bsmilie:

Especially the focus points on D600 confined only in the middle area....

What do you expect? It's cheaper than the D800.

My guess is that this is a problem within NSC.

This is known as the "silo" complex. This is how different departments within an organisation work independent of and sometimes against each other.

The staff or unit in charge of shutter replacement is only interested in fulfilling their (silo) part of the duty.
That is, to replace the shutter unit.
They do not care about anything else.

Sensor (filter) cleaning? Oh, that's not their responsibility. Someone else has to do that task.

New dust created while replacing the shutter? Also not their problem.
