I see, so you are speaking as a professional photographer ... in real life it can be a factor when dealing with customers ...

What I meant by small was usual rangefinder small, which of course is wishful thinking, just dreaming. The D40 is a still lighter than a smaller Leica M, though, the D40 being mostly plastic.

Here's one favorite picture of mine on Flickr (not everyone will like it of course), she took it with a D40, and she always manages to process her work superbly raw :

Can't call me professional. Last time, maybe. Now, it's only a sideline.
Btw, anyone have any idea how to connect studio strobes to D40? I am really too lazy to drag my monster D2x around with me.. (Besides, she's getting old and I want to preserve her) ;p

Read about the Nikon AS-15 hotshoe adaptor, but can't find any info about it in Singapore.

Pros
1. whisper silent shutter
2. excellent low noise performance
3. superb portability
4. excellent resolution from a 6mp camera
5. accurate focus
6. battery life
7. CHEAP!
8. Nice picture colours
9. User friendly and so darn easy

feel free to add on!

Cons
1. People think you are unprofessional, or worse, a newbie trying to make money with his latest bought DSLR
2. Can't AF with non-AFS lenses
3. Only 3-point focus
4. Cannot do in-camera customised trimmings

are you sure? d40 can do in-camera retouching (including cropping), plus a very nifty colour balance function that allows you to correct white balance in-camera, among other things.

i've sold off my canon camera lah!

So there are people who switch systems for the 18-200 lens!

Used to Minolta, Konica and Rollei 35mm, then tried antique Rolleiflex 120mm; gave up. Switched to Fuji, Olympus, Kodak and Lumix PnS, decided to jump ship to Nikon dSLR cos it's so darn easy!

yes there are indeed. ;)

nikon is smiling all the way to the bank with their 18-200VR.

If anyone here is planning to go into commercial photography. I suggest you all don't ever mention that you use a Nikon D40. Tell the employer/client that you are using XYZ camera and when you go for the shoot, just rent that camera. I just finished spending half the day emailing someone who runs an agency providing wedding photography services, with really disappointing results. Call it stupid business sense (on my part). Excerpts from the chain of emails below.

"D40 is a super low-end camera, are you still using this camera? Or you are planning to upgrade in the near future?"

"A photographer skill is not only will be judged by their photography skill but also the equipments they chose to use to do their job."

"And those used to work under XYZ company and own D50, D40, D70, sad to say, none of them can make it pass the *audition. So I am just worries when I heard D40 or D50."

**f photography is a passion to you, keep it as a hobby instead of job, you will lose interest out of it faster than you can imagine."

*Rephrased tag-along session to audition
**It seemed like he/she equates D40 to hobby

what a shallow company.

you can give a newbie a 1dmk3 or a d2xs.. doesnt mean he/she will be able to produce excellent results.

i dont mean to be rude, but sometimes people do equate such photogs as equipment w**k**s :sweatsm:

:cry:I feel rather guilty.. cause I sent him some sample pics... (Sample doesn't equate to best). Maybe it was my pictures that caused this knee-jerk reaction. Didn't think my pictures were THAT lousy, but.. :dunno: I certainly hope it's not my fault.

cheer up :) there will always be someone whom will recognize your works and talents in time to come

anyways on a lighter note here's my latest experiment :)~

exploring on apertures, shutter speeds, and iso. hoping to achieve a good combination so that it can be used in pubs/clubs to catch the effects

What you think of this image? I konw photoshopping not done very well (was in a rush). Is it that bad? (i.e. fail, 3/10) Pls be honest-at least I can kick my own ass if it's my fault. And don't worry, it's very hard to offend me :) Btw, Camera is Nikon D40, Lens 18-70mm, Flash not used.

hmm this image under my rating is definitely a pass, its a good catch of the moment. the bride's expression is priceless

but if one were to be a little nitpicky, it would be the groom's hand motion that is a little distraction, if not, perhaps maybe a little wider would be better, so that the groom's fully in the picture. there could also be a choice of whether the picture could have been a little harder or soft/dreamy right now.. would be definitely something interesting to investigate

I am.. relieved-this is one of my lousiest shots. :cheergal:
The only reason I kept it is because none of the other 3 have the bride's expression, and the car door is not at the right angle to show a balance between the bride and groom.

(Yup. I like to GPMG sometimes. And interestingly, the D40's 2.5fps works fine, contrary to what I thought before buying the camera. A fallback from my press days when good ole George Bush found it hard to keep his face straight and I had to capture every priceless moment

How would you do the dreamy part? Post process and blur the image? (In the days of film I had one special lens I would use-I called it the fungus lens :bsmilie:)

several ways it can be done, one of the common ways is to desaturate the picture a bit, adjust the curve a little and play with the glow effect.

else.. you can actually shoot with the d40 in-house soft-softer mode :P

i think it's a good shot. framing seems a bit tight, esp at the groom's end, but DOF and facial expressions are good. :)

what camera settings were used?

just experimenting only...

manual -> 30 second exposure
front flash with omnibounce
a piece of cardboard to cover the lens

i choose the wall and flash it hard for the background, then cover, move across the room to my lappy and start wiggling the camera around.. but eventually in pub dont need to wiggle so much cuz a lot of moving lights :)~

Once I wrote my name using the camera on a fixed light source. Need to move the camera in a reverse way, quite a challenge. ;p
