Many of regular cyclists are still not sure how to secure their bikes properly
to prevent bike thieves to take action. The few tools needed to put your
bike into a more secure position when you are leaving it for sometime.

1. Chain (at least two pieces 4 ft in length). You can use old inner tubes
to cover the chain to prevent abrasion on the paint work of your bike.

2. Shackle locks in different sizes

3. Other suitable locks for seat post.

Yup. I do cycle on and off pending weather aka raining , and have to reach 30 min before work to shower. Unfortunately the roads are not the most cycling friendly.


Recently kenna another freggin flat 15 minutes into a cycling trip, and took me almost an hr to the nearest LBS to fix the flat. Finally convinced myself to bring spare tubes and pump to DIY troubleshoot. Ordered Conti Gator tyres and spare tubes from Evans online ( along with some pretty interesting Fibre Flare hehehe )

@ petetherock - ur definition of non macho might be too difficult for many of us ..

Hehe, just got myself the Trek 6700 abt a month back, and like the rest of u in this forum, i am thinking of riding it and go out shooting pics with it haha... my tummy's getting out of control in size, its time to stop its expansion...
I have gone to the website and sign up for the ride of silence this weekend, hope it will be a fun one, and just hope that my legs dun give way by the time i cycle to the marina promenade.. cheers!

That's the bike - the Monotine FR 700C which I rode during one of the yearly Runway Cycling
Event held at the old airport. I got it from Gnee Hong which is also into the furniture business.

Be more adventurous by getting more cycling buddies to join your team.
This van can accommodate three 26" MTB together with the cyclists to
any venue you desired. You can negotiate with the driver to pick you up
at whatever destination and sent you back later to the pick up point.

We got the driver to drop us at Katong Shopping Centre so that we can explore
the Joo Chiat area and then proceed to East Coast Park and then to Changi
Point. The driver will go to the pick up point to pick up all the three cyclists.
So you'll have to arrange yourself to meet at the pick up point first and wait
for the van to pick you up.

Get out to explore the island instead of just riding around your
neighbourhood. You can get riding buddies by letting known your
needs in the cycling community. Be enthusiastic, polite and a keen
interest with eagerness to help others will get you in the long run
to have more loyal members in your team.

With the current encouragement from the authority to ride a bicycle more often,
I feel there is a need to organise event like "Ride a bicycle to work week"
to kick off the ground. I am sure there will be much positive response and
enthusiasm from the public. This event should be held at least twice per year
in conjunction with the OCBC Cycling and the Runway Cycling event.

By encouraging the public to ride a bike to work will one way or another help to
ease some of the problems that our public transport is facing. The Ride of Silence
has made all motorists be aware of the importance of giving equal respect to
cyclists as well as other road users.

A typical but rare scenario

The white roadbike on the right had its front wheel taken off. There are two possibilities,
it can be either the owner took the wheel off because of a punctured tire and sent it for
repair or someone took it away because it was not locked. But since the bike was
locked to the bike rack with the back wheel, it was obvious the owner had no choice
when he took the front wheel off for repair.

The bike on the left had been painted roughly with red and blue paint. The job was
done quickly as you notice the spokes on the back wheel also got some of the blue
paint. Quite obvious to see the reason for the quick paint job.

Looking for something light, but i'm not a weigh weenie, so I don't need those really light, really expensive kind.

Hope to avoid carbon, because installation is more troublesome.

it is not just the wheels that are stolen.
Anything that is fastened by screw, bolt and nuts and is not locked down can be stolen.
I have seen seat post, handlebar stolen before.
This apply to really cheap and old bicycle to expensive and new one as well.
It could be the pranks of the neighborhood kids.
Best if possible, bring it inside the house.

Bike vandalism

The owner had the frame of the bike locked to a lamp post.
He used two locks but did not lock the saddle. The next
thing that could happen, you know what, the wheels will
disappear in no time. Usually bicycle crime is committed
after dark even when the bike is locked beside a lamp post.
Cyclists usually don't secure the saddle of their bikes
thinking thieves won't be interested.
