Saw the release of the much awaited 35mm f/1.8 few days ago. I'm just curious to find out if the new 35mm f/1.8 glass is really sharper than the f/2 version?

I own a 50mm f/1.8 and was wondering whether to grab the new 35mm glass. Under certain circumstances, a wider lens will be a better option so that I dun really need to move back any further..

Are you planning to go into FF later on?

If so, stick with the F2. The f1.8 is DX only.

anydates whether AMK or John 3:16 has this lens??? I know Edison electronics don't have anymore at the moment...

I guess u have just made psycho270 more confused! Cheers!:sweatsm:

i tot that was pretty concise. i was super blur last time too. also tot that the dx lenses are different.

ok whatever is marked on the lens is the fx equivalent, 35mmf2=35mmf1.8dx (on dx body=52.5mm). 50mmf1.4dx=50mmf1.4 (on dx=75mm i think). just that dx sensor are 0.66x of a fx sensor (my guess).
dx lenses can only cover that 60% on fx bodies.(still guessing, i think lesser cos someone tells me that the crop factor is 1.3 on fx - okok now i'm confused too - someone explain.)

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

Whatever marked on the lens is the actual focal length, which is a physics/optics parameter. If you can mount a medium format lens on a DX camera, a 50mm lens is a 50mm lens is a 50mm lens. The FOV changes, and unfortunately instead of talking degrees and minutes we talk about FX equivalent - most photographers grew up on 35mm (or FX in digital land).

Yes 35mm DX lens = 35mm FX lens = 52.5mm DX FOV. As for sensor size, from www.nikon.com.sg:

Nikon DX format (23.6 x 15.8 mm) CCD sensor
Nikon FX format (36.0 x 23.9 mm) CMOS sensor

You work out the math for the size - use area.

Crop factor of 1.3 is only in Canon land where they have 3 different crop factors:
- 1x
- 1.3x
- 1.6x

Better not listen to Canon users - they will confuse you further, for them 50mm = 80mm FOV.

For those who wants to buy this lens but not in urgent need, I suggest wait for a month or 2, it will appear in B&S section as I personally feel that 35mm DX is not a very useful range and people who rush for it may regret their impulsive decision.:)

well i thought 35mm would be more useful than 50mm on a dx body? no?
to me 50mm on a dx body is like neither wide enough nor tele enough..haa not here nor there

I kinda agree here... I have a 50mm manual lens and I always have to move really far back from my subject in order to get more... kinda irritating not being wide enuff... then coz it's fixed you can't zoom also... Been eyeing this 35mm for awhile now.. but looking at all the feedback i'm starting to get slightly hesitant.... sigh...

To each his own.

You (usually) either love prime lens or zoom lens. Horses for courses.

If you have to move really far back to get in more then you are using the wrong lens, get a wide angle.

50mm on DX is a lovely short portrait lens. If you live within the limits it is a superb lens.

35mm on DX will be a "normal" lens, not here not there, not wide enough, not long enough, but in the right hands, a super tool. Cartier-Bresson used a Leica and a 50mm lens only, and he is world famous. God bless his soul.

Based on your comments (maybe) you should get yourself a zoom lens, better a superzoom like 18-200, everything-also-bao-ka-liao lens. But you'll won't get the bright f/1.8 or small compact size.

Or buy the 35mm or 50mm, play with them, not happy, sell. No real harm, just some loss (some call it tuition fee).

haha i like the tuition fee part.

after i impulsively bought a used 35mmf2, i feel like selling my 50mmf1.8. 35mm is limiting but easy enough to use, you cover an ok FOV (really not here not there), i do miss my tammy17-35mm at times but for f2, nicer bokeh, 200g is an ok compromise for me.

i love it.

would still like to try the sigma 20mm1.8 though and the sigma10-20.

Paid lots of tuition fees in the past, and continuing to do so in the present and probably in the future.

I strongly urge you to consider the strength of the 50mm f/1.8 before selling it. A prime lens can teach you a lot about photography.
1. Learn in theory what others use it for. In this case, probably portraits, shallow depth-of-field, street shooting.
2. Go out shoot it, try the various things you learn from theory, books, net, etc. Let the lens teach you its limitations, and strengths. Next time you will know exactly when to use which lens to get that exact effect.
3. If you still don't like it, sell it. But then again, at $100+, why bother?

The reasons I am not running out to buy a 35mm f/1.8DX right now:
1. I have the AF35mm f/2 lens (I have D300 and D60 - no AF on D60 that I carry more often for size and weight).
2. Minister for Home Affairs and Second Minister for Finance says times are bad, better don't anyhow-spend. And "you have so many lenses still want to buy somemore...".

No worries, some day I will sneak one home.

The 10-20mm would be a big eye-opener for those not exposed to UWA. See this http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=474066 for some UWA samples.

OT liao.

haha that is serious poison. i want a sigma real bad, haha. gotta save.

i wanted to sell the 50mm to get a tamron 90mm2.8 in maybe 6 months from now. i try to have 3 lenses only. now that i got my new favourite 35mm. i'm thinking of getting rid of my other tamron 28-300mm first, then i'll let go off the 50mm later. maybe get the 1.4 in the future.

i went thru both the 50mm b4 settling on the 35/2. actually, i like the 35/2 even on a DX camera better than the 50mm. strange but true...

the 35/1.8 for DX camera will probably end up as the 50/1.8 of DX camera if you want to go for a low-light cheap (ok... $400 oddish is not exactly cheap compared to the AFD50/1.8) lens. if only nikon can give us a little more pro-quality DX lenses (rather than yet another kit lens) along the lines of the 17-55/2.8... sigh... :(

Yeah, but I think they probably already thought about it. If they make it pro-quality, then we must be prepared to pay for more, 2 times more...and i'm not prepared for that yet...:p

Huh. So all those shops are selling at RRP?!

well, i guess i've more or less understood it. :) the replies are sort if helpful. ha, thanks guys, im still learning. :D
