yea the speedlites are sufficient. Unless you really feel u need to throw the light more or overpower the sun then ok la. Seriously joe consider speedlights, portability as well as enough power to do whatever portraits u need. Cheaper also.

was thinking more in the lines of 430EXs since he's just starting out. There are also 3rd party options like vivitars and the new lumipro flash. But it depends on him la, if he really cfm set his eyes on studio strobes nothing we can do but let him then maybe can borrow ;p

actually i just qouted that off scott kelby. lol.

btw i was under the impression that uk would have no problems obtaining the old nikon flashes. I camped the B/S threads for ages before getting mine, as well as some from ebay. Most of them are overpriced here.

It's amazing how people in the states can get a really gd condition set for like $20. Have u tried Ebay, i got one off from there, happy with the condition.
