Change in Pentax Distributorship ?

Quoted from the back of a Domestic Warranty Certificate issued by Shriro.

"WARRANTY POLICY

All PENTAX cameras purchased through authorized bona fide photographic distribution channels are guaranteed against defects of material or workmanship for a period of twelve months from date of purchase. Service will be rendered, and defective parts will be replaced without cost to you within that period,

Any PENTAX which proves defective during the 12-month warranty period should be returned to the dealer from whom you purchased the equipment or to the manufacturer.

If there is no representative of the manufacturer from your country, send the equipment to the manufacturer, with postage prepaid.

But if there is a representative of the manufacturer (Pentax, in this case), what should we do? Ask EmJay to ship it to Pentax?:dunno:

Anyway, if Pentax don't support their distributors, it's really bad.

it's not really a problem for me, since i don't have any stuff under warranty and come this september it's Pentax USA for me

just hope all ends well

My K20D and DA*50-135 will be out of warranty in a couple of weeks time. I am not so worried about them.

I am however a bit concerned about my new DA*16-50, because of the SDM motor it has:sweat: And I did pay extra for the warranty, otherwise, I could have got it grey.

Anyway, I hope this matter can be resolved without friction.

Well, it doesn't affect me very much either since I only have a bit of warranty left on one lens and that's all. But I think it's the principle behind it - it does seem to be telling us that we as customers can be pushed around. The current situation seem to indicate that Pentax and/or Emjay doesn't care if it may be unfair to the customer who only just bought a >$1000 product one month and find out the following month that 11 months' worth of warranty became void through no fault of his own. To me as a consumer, this is rather disheartening.

Yes, ultimately this is all business, and the bottomline is important, and helping to cover the warranty of something that was not sold under your distributorship may sound like a bad deal at the start. But this is really just a short term investment. The intangible of starting off with a highly dissatisfied customer base may or may not end up costing the business more.

I like Pentax for many reasons, and will still not hesitate to bring the brand up if people ask me for camera recommendations. But one thing that is IMHO a clear disadvantage of Pentax is the lack of a proper HQ/office locally, and this current situation is a consequent of that.

We're not bashing or pushing the blame to MJ but just upset about it.
I've bought a local K20 & lens with several months warranty but now :(

People buy local sets due to convenience and pay the extra cost of the warranty.
Pentax provide the after-sale service (same for any brand or product). But now :dunno:
Changing of distributor causes warranty to void locally and need customer to ship to US or Japan? Call this custmer service? :nono:

In such a case, consumer might as well buy grey or on-line and sent back to shop or Pentax oversea for warranty (at least for the next few months of purchases).

I liked Pentax cam and lens (in fact, I've 2 Pentax cams & several lenses) but this experience is just rotten :mad2: and it just showed that Pentax is not taking care of its customer. :thumbsd:

Instead of ranting at Emjay who didn't issue the warranty when you bought your Pentax gear, shouldn't you also pursue the matter with Shriro as well, since the warranty card was issued by them? Not trying to put anyone down but we need a reality check. The Pentax distributorship has changed hands for the fourth time now and frankly there is no reason why it should cater to customers who were served by the previous distributors. Best to lobby Shriro to make arrangements for a transfer of the balance of warranty to be honoured by Emjay.

You are right, let them hv some time to settle it. ;)

I kinda agree w/ what creampuff said above. It's not just MJ, we should talk to Shriro about the left warranty issues too. When we bought the products they brought in, they should honor the warranty because it's already factored in the prices we paid.

Meantime we should contact Pentax Japan (I'm sending an email to them soon) about this too and see how they'd deal with this.

It's still too early to blame MJ for their decisions. They are just a new distributor for Pentax, not really a Pentax branch office here in Singapore. If there is some compliment from Shriro (passing tools/spare parts to MJ, certain amount of fund, and etc.), I'm sure MJ would be glad to take over the warranty left over from Shriro. It all depends on the agreement between them.

As to International warranty, we were lucky that Shriro considered them as valid. As far as I know, Pentax agents in quite some countries especially in south east asia (China, India, Philippines and etc) don't really consider International warranty as valid, and thus the repair cost isn't free even within warranty period. If MJ decides to go the same way, I don't think we can do anything about it. They are entitled to charge a fee for shipping/labor cost even the defect products are still under International warranty.

Yes, I think you can ask MJ to send the defected items back to Pentax Japan, but MJ probably will charge you the shipping and labor cost as written in the warranty agreement:

Any PENTAX which proves defective during the 12-month warranty period should be returned to the dealer from whom you purchased the equipment or to the manufacturer. If there is no representative of the manufacturer from your country, send the equipment to the manufacturer, with postage prepaid. In this case, it will take a considerable length of time before the equipment an be returned to you owing to the complicated customs procedures required. If the equipment is covered by warranty, repairs will be made and parts replaced free of charge, and the equipment will be returned to you upon completion of servicing. If the equipment is not covered by warranty, regular charges of the manufacturer or of its representatives will apply. Shipping charges are to be borned by the owner. If your PENTAX was purchased outside of the country where you wish to have it serviced during the warranty period, regular handling and servicing fees may be charged by the manufacturer's representatives in that country. Notwithstanding this, your PENTAX returned to the manufacturer will be serviced free of charge according to this procedure and warranty policy.

No where in my post did I blame MJ for the situation.

Sorry if I'm ranting but Pentax has had never catered to this group of customers. Or had it really been overlooked?

It's even okay for me to forfeit the few months left of warranty if I've to take it upon myself. But seemed like the customers are the losers. :(

Meantime we should contact Pentax Japan (I'm sending an email to them soon) about this too and see how they'd deal with this.

Thank you for the effort, FengWei!

Please keep us updated with your correspondences with Pentax, Shriro and Emjay :)

everyone needs to eat. I dont know how Pentax "repays" Emjay for servicing their products but i think its pretty natural to start fresh if bringing over the warranty from shriro means having to make a loss unless shriro is willing to give reasonable compensation for emjay to bring over the warranty depending on the terms of the handing over of distributorship which we have yet to know the details.

another scenario is that they forgot about it when discussing the terms so only now when its highlighted that emjay and shriro are re-negotiating (with Pentax HQ?).

Ideally the outcome is beneficial to everyone. just brace yourselves if the final decision is not that ideal.

By the way, has anyone actually verified the authenticity of this Ronald fellow from Emjay?

Scarly we were all taken for ride.

Looks legit enough.. yes, give him time.

And besides the warranty issue, let's offer to work with Emjay too, on how to promote Pentax, make stuff cheaper for us, etc. We can think of ideas. :)

From my opinion, this Ronald does seem like a hoax. Since when distributors start to reply to users through a forum. This is my first time.

And by the way, if we want to have our Pentax serviced besides by Emjay, who do we go to? Anyone here have any recommended shops to do Pentax servicing?

Nope, he is as real as you and I.....
