Irregardless of whatever decision that you guys make....

There will always be a BUY BUY BUY Virus.

CRY CRY CRY

so the idea of the C.U.G. I gather is to....

a. share knowledge
b. dicuss ideas
c. forge new friendships
with others who have a similar passion for photography
[and not just Canon] ?

;)

canon-only? Why be such an equipment purist?

Members condition:
Everything you buy must be a canon as long as Canon has the product.
Example:
PnS - Must be canon
DSLR - Must be canon
Lenses - Must be canon
Fliters - Must be canon, unless canon does not manufacture it eg: LPR fliters
Printers - Must be canon, unmodified, meaning NO usage of continuous ink system becasue it's not by canon. Inks must also be canon.
Vest - if you need one.. must be a canon.
Camera bag - Canon logo embossed bags allowed only
Eye-glasses - if canon has the lens you must buy canon lenses.
Tripod - Must be Canon (those scrawny ones given at IT shows)
All other accessories - TCONs, Extension tubes.. must all be original Canon.

No grey set are allowed.

:dunno: Is that what we want? A Canon purist? So CPS stands for Canon Purists Supporter.

I didn't buy a Canon DSLR because Canon couldn't make a decent enough entry level body for me at a good price, I was contemplating very hard to convince myself to but the 350D but cannot bear to do it and 20D is out of reach for me. My mind-share has always been with Canon and I'm not afraid to say I support Canon more than the brand I'm using now.

The point of the group is that, IMHO, as long as you support Canon, regardless of whehter you actually own it is immaterial.

Unless a troll would want to waste his time to come down for canon meet ups, people who actually meet up will be canon supporters discussing about canon equipment.

We Canonians must be dare to differ.

Hi.

I couldn't have say it any better ... why don't we put our money where the mouth is, leave it as it is - unique ... why form another competing group?

As for SEED, it is incorrect to say it's only meant for learning photography per se. It welcomes all and we try to facilitate networking and such.

I've been using the Canon system for years, from a simple Canon P+S in the late 80s to now and I'm proud of the fact that so far at CS, we have not gone into forming a brand-user group which IMO has worked to our advantage as that has indeed made us unique. I have no wish to comment on the rationale behind the formation of other user groups because I don't belong to one.

I started off as a Canon user when some of us come together to make ClubSNAP a reality and I'm glad we did not try to polarise the community into various usergroups, otherwise the community will not be as vibrant and varied as of now. As a Canon user, I'm urging fellow Canon users (I find the term Canonite awkward though) to make our equipment work for us, not the other way round. Yes, there'll be new users to the system and I'm sure there'll be ample opportunities for you to learn to how to use your equipment be it through SEED, photoshoots and chit-chats. Let's not polarise this and instead meet to improve our photography experience by meeting up with interesting characters who are also using other brands and makes.

I know not everyone will buy this. As a passionate Canon user, I'm making this appeal. Come on people, let's make the right choice and stand together as photographers! :)

Why not think of it as similar to the other systems user grouping? They have no "puriest" mindsets... I doubt canon users want to "isolate" themselves as well.

It's ment more of the system users to interact rather than serve as a polarisation of the members of CS.

Also, if we dwell into the details... each systems have it's respective distinctness... for example the E-TTL of the canon flash (or E-TTL II)... I was hoping such group might provide more answer to such things (although I've read the threads and links in CS) it's good if there are discussion on how to optimise the system..rather than comparision between pro's and con's of respective systems.

Furthermore, Techmage have offered not only the location for gathering, also there might be a chance of getting Canon to "take notice" that there are such amature-photog group (the other group is CPS of course). Who knows what future opportunities might be created for this user group have for the average CS'er like us.... might it be a spingboard to something more?

edit: IMHO, if this user gathering wants to be unique, then should have a different focus from what is already established... be it SEED or "whatever-UG"... I'm thinking along the line of "know your system"

Pardon me if I OT quite a bit here.
Several years ago when I was still in uni, one of the subjects I took up was about asian history. And so I got to borrow and look at some books in the library that was closely related to this subject for my assignment -- something about asian and chinese history in the early 20th century.

As pictures tend to catch my attention far more than words (like most of us), there was this photo taken in those early years in China of an English restaurant as I recall. And at the entrance of this restaurant was a signboard that writes in bold: "No Chinese & Dogs Allowed".

I wonder what the locals must have felt then. Perhaps they looked away since most commoners could not have been able to afford a high-class meal tailored for gentlemen, ladies and people of high standing. Well, that was probably a century ago. Today we have all kinds of resaurants that serve good food and everyone and anyone who appreciates good food can enjoy it together.

What's my point in this? That's for us to ponder in our own way.

Unknowingly, White Supremacy still exists, as shown in certain restaurants with double-standards towards locals and Caucasians. ;)

But den again I'm not sure abt it... If its kinda like inviting juz only Canon users to meetup, wun it feel like an elitist group? And eventually, as with most elitist groups, ppl with average skills gets pushed to the bottom slowly, eventually u get the best ppl within the group but.... Dun expect a large happy crowd... It'll be kinda like a 'upper-class people gathering' thingy.

I think its ok for DMH to support Canon users. As to what defines a Canon user, its best for DMH to decide.

My personal view is that a Canon photography / videography user is any one that uses a Canon device for such purposes... Thus this would include Canon video recorders and Canon cameras (P&S to DSLR to Film SLR).

Whether this is elitist or not, depends on its members. I don't see NUG being elitist, nor do I think this Canon user group will become one. Each system is unique... there should be nothing wrong to get together to dicuss the idosyncracies of their own unique system.

For example, Canon users can get together to discuss about its ETTL and ETTL2 system. Or compare the benefits of getting the various flavours of the 70-200 lens. The benefits of Zeiss / M42 lens on a Canon body. These are all unique to Canon anyway.

I don't think anyone in their right mind would gather just to bash another system - its a complete waste of time.

Just my 2 cents worth....

Btw, I use Canon DSLR, Nikon/Sony P&S, Sigma, Tamron, Canon lens... but I won't mind joining this group to talk about Canon.....
:)

I may be wrong, but think that if we look at the macro view (ie clubsnap.com), I do not see an elitist mentality emerging ... Newbies like me still can post help and I-Dun-Know-How msgs and some kind souls or other often respond to me ... I see this gathering as a possibility where I can maybe rub shoulders with people who use 20Ds and maybe even higher eqpm and I may hv opportunity to see and appreciate the difference between their equipment and mine and learn more things ... people who use the same camera may have some tricks up their sleeves that I can learn. No point I learn the camera tricks of a N or O or even F users ...

my 2 cents ...

Wah, still debating?

After so much "heated" discussion abt "For All" or "For Canon Only", I wonder who will be there next Friday. :D I just wanna learn more abt my equipments. Hope this topic wouldn't be next Friday's agenda.
