Grip good to have..I just got mine yesterday and now realise that I should have gotten it earlier.
First, its good to be able to use AA batteries when the Canon battery dies overseas and far from a power outlet and secondly, just better grip on the camera both vertically and horizontally (now my little finger doesn't need to hang in the air)

The BG-E5 allows you to insert 2 of the proprietary batteries and if you want to use both slots, it is advisable to use 2 of the same kinds (brands) so you will need 2 of either Canon or 3rd party batteries. Anyway, I can't really comment on 3rd party batteries as I don't have any...maybe some of the others here can help you on that.
As for AA batteries, you will have to remember that you will have far less shots so use it if you either have no choice, have lots of AA batteries to use up or just taking a few shots while you charge up you proprietary battery.

Ive had the grip for quite long already, use it with both a third party as well as the canon batt. No problems.
