Canon Pro9000

Hi guys,

Sorry for this late report on the Canon PIXMA Pro9000... so let me say the most important thing first... it is SPECTACULAR! Miles ahead of the predecessor Canon i9950 that I've been using. The reason why I was so late in reporting is that I was quite unbelieving that this new printer is so good, that I went back to my archives of images and started reprinting some of the images I've done on the i9950. The difference between the two sets of prints are astounding side-by-side! I actually wanted to stop at 5 prints but I kept on going because the quality was just so incredible. I was finally forced to stop when I ran out of A3 paper and the stores are already closed... :bsmilie:

I think one of the revelation is that although both the older i9950 and Pro9000 uses the same number of inks, the Pro9000 delivers smoother gradients and much more accurate colours. If your screen is calibrated (the Spyder Express 2 that comes with the Pro9000 if you buy at Cathay comes in useful), the canned profiles for Canon paper delivers very close results. And the prints are vibrant yet neutral, so you are getting the best of both worlds.

As mentioned, the set-up is very easy and fast, so you should be up and running in an instant. The LED ink system is fantastic as mentioned before, and the printer is very robustly constructed. Printing is extremely fast, taking less than 2 minutes for each A3 print! And that is in high-quality mode... which accounts for my burning up of my horde of photo paper so quickly... :embrass:

Monochrome printing is better than I expected, although the contrast is slightly higher than I expected. I think that is due to the use of black ink only for printing, which reduces colour cast when printing BUT it slows down printing substantially. If you are printing lots of monochrome photos, that could be an issue if you need them quickly.

The software is the work of a genius, and it works very well as reported by other reviews. There is no longer any need to resize your images to print them, as the Easy Photo Print Pro software automatically does that for you in a non-destructive manner. Works like a charm, and if you're a Canon DSLR owner using the bundled Digital Photo Pro (DPP), you can even print images direct from RAW in DPP!

Other nifty features include straight-through printing where you can feed in thick media such as the Hahnemuhle papers or cardboard or canvas media. The system is elegant with the back tray sliding out sleekly from the back, and the printer is equipped with wheels at the back to let you lift and drag the printer for straight-through printing! Nice attention to details! But... I wonder why they have a PictBridge port in front of the printer... it's quite unlikely for photographers to print direct from camera for such a high-end printer right?

I've printed nearly 30 A3 prints and the ink is still going strong. Gonna pop down to Funan or Sim Lim tomorrow to get more ink and paper. My experience with this printer has been very positive and it's definitely worth every cent. If you are thinking of getting the Pro9000 and don't already have a colour calibrator for your display, the Cathay offer of $899 for the Pro9000 and ColorVision Express 2 is a great buy to start your own digital lab!

woow.. tempting to get the Pro9000! Wondering how does it compare to the Epson 3800...

But my i9950 is still so new and I got some many ink left...

wow i have the i9950 and already amazed by the prints ALL THE TIME. That must have meant that Pro9000 is REALLY good to beat i9950. Gotta check this printer out.

Heya Neo,

Thanks for the 'mini' review! I am so tempted now. Hehe. Cheers mate!

But still no banner printing option yah i presume?

Is this printer Window Vista ready? thinking of getting a printer that can print larger than my current one.

Heya Neo, I went to Canon's showrooms and none of them actually have any samples of the Pro9000 print outs. When I asked for some they told me I had to wait. :dunno:

I am really interested to see the B&W print outs. When you have time later, I really hope you can a 'little' wee bit more review of the B&W capabilities of the Pro9000 compared to the iP5200. Hope I am not asking for too much. Thanks mate! Cheers!

Anyone using this Canon Pro9000 printer can advise if I should check the 'Black Point Compensation'?

not very sure, but you can check out one shop in SLS 5th floor...
i got my BCI-8 at $18 (outside selling $19.90) and PGI-5BK at $23 instead of the usual $23.90. thats he lowest i found so far. :)

Thanks, I missed this post as I was at SLS to buy a notebook harddisk... a 2.5" Seagate 120Gb $164, if had seen this post earlier would have gone to get the ink. Will try again on Saturday.

Thanks for the review Neo. Sounds very good indeed. But too bad there's limited space in my room and I don't think I will have space to store the A3 printouts.

But I'd be tempted if Canon comes out with a new pro printer that prints up to A4. I wonder why there is no replacement for the iP8500... It's about time isn't it?

Hi guys,

Rushing some projects like crazy... finally got the time to get back to my new toy! :)

Hazmee, with regards to your question on monochrome printing, I've been printing using the Pro9000 on the Matte Photo Paper MP101 as well as some spare pieces of Hahnemuhle papers that my friend passed to me. I must say that it is vastly superior to the i9950 and other Canon printers before it. The contrast is punchy and the tones are very close to true neutral. However, it is significantly slower than colour printing, and so if you are looking at printing lots of monochrome print in a short time, it may not be such a good choice. I've timed each A3 monochrome print to be about 8 minutes, as compared to a colour one which takes barely a minute (it's a speed monster in colour).

The new PIXMA Pro9500 is supposedly designed for great monochrome prints, but I'm very happy with the Pro9000 currently. The colours are fantastic, and the monochromes may take some time but they are great as far as I'm concerned. So if colour prints are your mainstream and you print monochrome leisurely, the Pro9000 will be a great addition to your digital darkroom!

Hi Kiwi,

I'm lucky that my new room has loads of wall space, but I also store a lot of my prints in portfolio for easier sharing. If you can spare the space for A3, you should do it! It's a lot more satisfying looking at the A3 enlargement! :)

A4 pro photo printer replacement? Yeah... I think it's about time... but there's no indication that Canon will be launching one anytime soon.

Thanks a lot Neo! I am seriously considering the Pro9000 right now. ;p

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum. I purchased a Pro 9000 2 days after the launch and have recently started printing on Hanhemuhle Photo Rag 188 and the results are very, very good. I use a profiled monitor of course. Thus far in 20 prints I've only had one colour cast, and one print where colours are not as saturated as they shold be, though it's probably due to a monitor profile issue. Very good printer. Highly recommended. Does guzzle ink however, I now have to replace 2 tanks after about 30 A3+ prints (12x18).

Hi Natnai,

Glad to know that you're enjoying your Canon Pro9000! For the 2 ink cartridges that ran out, are they the Photo Magenta/Photo Cyan? It's normal that the photo inks run out earlier than the rest, as they are lighter in density. Take a look at how much ink the remaining cartridges have and you'll be glad the printer has the Think Tanks system (or else you'd have to throw away the remaining ink when the first colour runs out). I've used other brands before and the Pro9000 delivers one of the highest mileage...

Oh yes... I find the results on the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag very good too! :)

Yes, it is the photo magenta, but photo cyan is still going strong. Yellow is the other ink that has run out. It guzzles ink insanely, especially the "Photo" inks. Those of you who are going to buy this printer, do it. But remember these inks will not last as long as pigments. Very good for proofs though, if you want to proof and then print larger with Chris Yap or whoever...the colours/tones should not drastically vary.
