Canon 60D: Homerun or Disappointment?

I see... I went on a weekday, and lesser crowds... and I was there waiting.... after the previous guy finished trying, I would POUNCE and HOG the camera... one by one, I tested.... try out the GPMG, the Pistol, the Rifle.... and handled all.... and I was hooked to 60D, 7D and 5D II.... maybe when 5DIII with 7D AF, Gridline, 100% VF.... it would have been more poison for me... but for now, 7D poison and as strong as 60D's poison... so it is pretty poisonous for me.... :bsmilie:so both the poison neutralized each other.. so I am safe... for now... :bsmilie:

Be careful. I have heard of cases where the neutralization wears off after 3 days.... then boom!.... the poison is doubled, sometimes tripled!

Symptoms include:

1. Constantly dreaming of a 7D/60D or 5D
2. Involuntary up and down movement of the index finger as it thinks it is pressing a shutter button
3. Involuntary wrist rotation as it adjusts the zoom lens of your imaginary camera
4. Closing of one eye due to the imaginary camera your other eye is looking through
5. Neck pains from the imaginary camera around your neck all day

There is only one known antidote.... buy!

How much is the Pentax going for???? D7000 is in 7D category... are the E5 and K5 from the same segment???? Or is it from the 60D segment??? I think after 60D intro, the price could drop soon....

Hi Halfmoon... correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the D300s is in the same category as the 7D. The D7000 is actually in the same category of the 60D.

I think if get 7D.... maybe need more than a month to study the manual as compared to the 60D, the 7D have more functions right????

Price if is right, I will not hesitate...... but by then, 60D will also drop some more.... hahah... :bsmilie:

Forget to add----- the Sony Lens design is not to my liking too... and also, the feel......

I think it is for still only... seems like highlight tone priority will be helpful if the exposure is over expose... it can retain some details... if it is disabled... activating the auto lighting thingy... it makes photo brighter...

the functions are about the same... but 7D can customize more... :-D

Hi guys... I am pretty impressed by Pentex K5 High ISO test so wanna test out my camera as well... Wahaha! Same settings, using Av, F/8 and ISO starting from 1600... Using 24-105 mm L (that is not cheating I hope cause it is an L...). Only have 1 bottle of wine though... :embrass:

the ISO 3200 100% crop appears sharper than the ISO 1600 one. i presume you left it on AF for each shot?

Nope... I using MF on the large word "Lagupeau"... I wanted to do a 100% crop on the label but I underestimate the size of a 18 megapixels photo... so I crop with the section with the most wordings... Maybe my tripod jerk a bit. Will try again later...

do your find it annoying that there is no sensor that blacks out the screen when you look through the viewfinder?

Pretty good result except that your L lens does not live up to its reputation. Try with your Siggy 50f1.4, use liveview to focus, and shoot with a remote. The Pentax guys used their limited prime lens that's equivalent to Canon's L primes. Anyway, ISO 6400 seems to be quite usable. Appreciate your effort.

I think it depends on your video requirement... if u are using the video mode for a short period of time, then a PnS or a DSLR is a good option. FYI quoted from the instruction manual, if the file size of the video reach 4 gb, it will stop immediately. So for full HD would be about 12 minutes... and yes u can used the tamron lens ( I assume u spelt wrongly...) on the 60D.

For me, I would choose to get a PnS for video instead. A DSLR is designed such that it is most efficient when using phase detection to AF. The contrast AF for all DSLR is amazingly slow so u will have problem focusing if u are using large aperature. For PnS... as it has a very small sensor, everything seems sharp on video... and of course lighter and easier to use. Just my 2 cents... :-D

Hehe... I was looking for instruction on how to prolong the LCD illumination on the LCD panel... love the orange light. Wahaha! Anyone has any idea cause I cannot find it in the manual... :cry:

As what you advised, I'm using a DSLR for photos and a PnS camera (co camera ) for video. I found PnS camera are not suitable for video for the obvious reason - Focusing issue.
Focus is locked the moment you're started filming, and hence defeat the purpose of zooming as the focus will be off. All you can do is stop the video, readjust the zoom, focus and start a new recording.

I'm in the category where I wanna take photos (85% of the time) and videos (15%) as and when I like, without buying a handy cam just for that 15% of the time.

I've some questions for the video mode:

1) I've a Tamron 90mm Macro lens. Can I use it to take videos? Sounds kinda crazy because if this is possible does that mean I can take video of magnified insects like what you see in documentary?

2) Does it support Zoom in / out with real time manual focusing? (no chance for AF right? )

1. Seriously no idea sia... My cousin got a Canon 100mm... will give it a try when I borrowed it from him...

I have been searching for an APS-C to back up my Canon FF for almost 6 months. So far, the Pentax K5 has impressed me most. Take a look at the images posted. So far, from all the 60D and 7D threads, I have yet to see images comparable to what I see these 2 days of the new Pentax K5, not only here but world wide.

What r u looking for in the K5 vs 60D/7D comparison? Arty images? Technical qualities like colour charts & AF speed/tracking, etc? Or combo? Arty stuff anyone can do & they r also subjective. Technical qualities too blend, dun u think? :think:

I have not tried this but I cannot see any reason why this would not work. It would be very interesting if anyone could post a video of macro work that they've done.

BTW: How do you like the Tamron 90 macro? I am in the market for a macro and can't decide between the Tamron 90 or the Canon 100.

Everything I read indicates the Sony A55's ISO performance on par with the latest Canon APS-Cs.

I don't think the non-flip up mirror is a major issue at all, except for Ghosting.

If anything, I think the 60D is not as much a revolutionary step at all. Compared to contemporary offerings like Nikon's D7000 and Sony's new A55 & A33. The 60D is just barely good enough for canon users.

It's really sad. I was hoping they would continue the innovative streak like when the 7D came out or even the 550D - having such features at a lower price point.

I just want to comment that before anyone said that Sony's offerings of A55 and A33 are contemporary and that Canon is far behind in it's technology, the Sony's SLT technology was based on an old Canon technology in 1965. Canon introduced the pellix mirror which was ahead of it's time. Although Canon solved the blackout problem during the mirror flip-up image capture, the Sony A55 failed on that count. Canon EOS 1 RS solved the blackout problem and even able to shoot 10 fps during that film era. Why Canon did not pursue further was because the loss of light caused more issues than one can gain in continuos AF and fast fps. I am sure Canon will watch this Sony advancement closely. And knowing Canon's rich innovation, they will improve with each product's offering. Gotta have faith in Canon.

Has anyone seen any Nikon D7000's in stores yet? I wonder how the IQ of the D7000 compares to the IQ of the Canon 60D.

The Canon G12 appears to beat the Nikon P7000 in IQ at 3200 ISO as follows:

Will the D7000 follow the same pattern? Anybody have comparative photos to demonstrate?

no matter what, canon digital compact cameras are much better than any other competitors, IMO.
