kekeke the Canon Defenders seem to be out in full force

hi there. thanks for pointing out the defect. appreciate your time posting on CS.

$4388 12 months Citibank visa installment

Good price. mine 4300, shop warranty and only have photocopy of booklet. sigh!

So glad that you were able to get a replacement for it. Better check everything to make sure that this one is ok.

cheers!

TS: Thanks for the kind info and pure simple harmless statement imo.

you guys react like I'm proclaiming all 5Ds to be faulty. c'mon the tread title was just a bit sarcastic, that's all. I know it’s a great camera, I just was unlucky to get a bad copy, that’s all.

Personally, I had bad experience with this camera too... this is not the easiest camera to use and semi automatic mode with flash is pretty bad for its consistency. No wireless flash, no IS on 50mm... what I am going to do with it?

Of course. Image quality is great, but other than that, it is not such a pleasure camera to use...

That is my opinion... feel free to trash my opinion, nonetheless, if I am paying for $4000 for a camera, I expect to be a little bit better than this.

thanks for the info mutabor. i check almost everything before i buy. however i never thought of checking the focusing point one at a time.

I had a similar experience when i bought my 30D, I found out there was a dead pixel in the LCD screen.. (after 2 days using it) I came back to the shop and get a replacement one to one on the spot. It was in Hong Kong, shop: Wing Shing. moral of the story: thorough checking before buying is a must!

TS thanx for the update coz i may go into 5D  . Sad to see alot of forummers are flaming for no reasons. funny to see crapper defending another crapper :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

Not trashing you but I am confused with your comments.

What is semi-automatic mode? You mean shutter and apeture priority?? I found my 5D extremely accurate with the 580 and Metz ct4.

Isn't wireless flash an option with the flash unit itself? So what are you talking about? You meant no on camera flash you can trigger wirelessly? Well, the 1-series is much more expansive, and they don't have on camera flash. Canon must be a lousy designer if according to your logic.

What on earth is "No IS for 50mm?" Why do you need Image Stablizationfor a 50mm? For all EOS camera, the IS is still on the lens itself, so why is this a problem with 5D?

thanks for the heads up and bringing up the point for the benefit of others. It helps us take utmost care when buying. After all I don't want to take a chance after making a huge investment.

jumping over to canon?

When are you guys going to learn that nothing man made is ever perfect. Be it a Nikon, Canon, Olympus, etc, etc.

Yes, Aperture priority... my experience is with 5d and 580 too... not very accurate. Hence I want to shoot manual on everything... and can't figure out how to use the M mode to change the aperture...? frustrating.

Yes, how do you trigger the flash wirelessly? extra thing to buy, Canon didn't give me anything to trigger the flash wirelessly thought they told me the flash can do it, but how? and yes, It is a lousy designer as far as wireless flash goes. Image quality & Build quality department is impressive I must say.

I need an stabilised lens/body for an exposure when it goes down to 1/5sec at 50mm f1.2 ISO 1600. Can't use the tripod in most cases. I can't get sharp image on that combination. I don't think Canon 50mm has any IS? well at least not on the lens that I am using.

Sorry I am comparing it with the so call much inferior APS-C Dynax 7D body which I can changing aperture and shutter speed is a breeze in M mode, image stabilise with my 50mm f1.2 lens and wireless control with a flick of the flash... I just can't justify all the cost with less feature and flexibility... I mean 5D+50mm f1.2+580 flash is not something like $2000, they are roughly around $6000?

I might sound harsh or just plainly stupid to some, but the math just don't adds up. It matters to me if I can't get the shot I want.

I was seriously thinking of buying into Canon or Fujifilm (Nikon System) system, starting with 5D, but was utterly dissapointed.

Maybe I should try 1 series before I jumped into the conclusion.

If it makes you feel better I paid 5800 for the same camera heh heh

 the camera gear is back to Canon. so cost nothing to me... I was evaluating their system... I told them the requirement, they give me the stuff and say, nah, the camera is easy to use, you don't need a manual..., they must think I am a rocket scientist of something... Luckily it was just a backup camera and for evaluation only. So... guess I am staying where I am.

I don't think the 1-series will be any different since IMO, the issues you have with the 5d are still the same issues you will have with the 1d(user issue).

To change the aperture in M mode, you will need to make sure that your rear dial is "on". There are 2 'on' settings, one with the rear dial enabled and one without. I found this out without the manual after about 5 mins of use. All Canons with a rear dial have worked this way in M mode since the film days.

Wireless flash can be triggered by the ST-E2 or the 580EX or a slave flash, take your pick.

The whole problem is that you don't know how to use the camera and are not familiar enough with camera systems such that you can pick up a body and roughly figure out how everything works within a short span of time without the manual. Because you can't work the body, you assume that it cannot work. That is the issue. I find the 5d childishly easy to use since there aren't button "combos" like that on the 1-series bodies, which is why, had I been in Canon's position, I would have also told you that you don't need the manual.

Generally, if one is serious enough about photography to plonk down the large sum of money required for a 5d, you'd tend to expect that they'd know quite a bit about gear in general.
