Canon 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS

Oh great my 18-200 finally died for no reason, was taking some shots in class when I zoomed to ard 135mm (was using manual focus), i felt the focus ring was kinda stiffed up and then when i zoomed back to 18, it got stucked at 24mm, and when i tried to zoom out, some crap came off inside and now my front barrel can just slide freely and doesn't zoom in or out any more. So nw my 18-200 became 24mm prime, cool eh!:o

I think CSC is your best bet in fixing the lens...

Studio Group Portraiture

There was some inquiries on how does the Canon 18-200IS kit lens perform in studio lighting condition.

The following test shot was taken using a focal length (50mm) at an aperture of F13, ISO 200.

Constructive criticisms & comments are welcomed... :)

wah, i like how you eliminated the shadows of the models.

Nice...you are like the unofficial local spokesman for this lens.

Thanks, it's actually a simple three lights setup that was typically used in blogshop shoot. The purpose of this test is responding to some inquires to me on how the lens perform stop down in a studio (multi-light conditions).

Thanks... I am sure there are photographers out there with outstanding photographs taken with this kit lens but is too busy or shy to post their masterpiece here.

Many would agree that it's a versatile lens, especially for a kit lens. :)

Let me try to bring this thread back alive so that people who wants to know about this lens can look here to see its potential.

Took this cat recently under my void deck at late night.
Canon 500D + 18-200mm
at 200mm (scared the cat will bite me if I am too near)
ISO 800 f5.6 1/5s handheld.
Converted to B&W since there's already alot of noise so might as well make it a B&W grainy "portrait" picture.

Getting my first DSLR soon (getting the 60D) and have a hard time deciding which kit lens to get. Coz I read the web review and all lens have their pros and cons. But this thread really help me to make up my mind. ;)

Thanks, Anson.

Glad to be of service. Credit goes to all the photographers who have contributed their wonderful shots in this thread. :)

hi, Anson, you are using 450D, right? What is the length of the whole setup from the back of the camera to the front of the 18-200mm lens. I am thinking of getting the Kata 3N1 22, just wondering whether it will fit a 60D with 18-200mm just nice.

Thanks. :)

Did a little googling... with body and the lens attached the 450D is 164mm while the 60D is 181mm.

Personally if I am using a single body and lens I would just use a normal neoprene camera pouch..

i did google and found out the length of body and lens separately - added up to about 180mm. Just want to double confirm. ;) Thanks for your reply. :)

Btw, what to look/check for when getting the camera at the shop? I mean other than checking the contents of the box. Sorry, first time getting DSLR, dun know what to expect.

My advise check if there is dust on the lens, follow by a focus check and most important valid that the warranty card matches the serial number of the equipment.

Best to bring a friend along who knew the system well. Test, test & test before making the purchase.

Here's my contribution for the EF-S 18-200mm. I would say this lens performs above expectations in good light. But when the light is low, God help us all. :bsmilie:

Another candid shot I took. Again when there's good light, things tend to look sharper.

Thinking of buying either 18-135 or the 18-200 lens... Read review the 18-200 are not as shape but more convenient due to the longer range. Will the extra 65mm range means alot if I buy the 18-135 lens (cheaper)? Any shot will 135mm and 200mm on the same scene so can see the difference of the range? Thanks. Just got my 1st dslr 600d not long ago.

thanks for the tips. :) btw, noob question, where to find the serial number at the camera? :embrass:

most likely tomorrow will get it, dun think have friends who is free during office hour to accompany me to go. ;p

Anyone experienced the issue of having the silver ring peel off? =)

At the base of the camera (near the tripod mount), if can't find ask the sales person to show you. :)

So far after 1.5 years of usage nope...maybe you exposed it under harsh environment and the silver paint has worn off haha.

But no matter, as nobody will really notice it unless you are talking about SOME red paint dropping off.

Hahaha cos I realized it's just like a sticker instead of paint that's why I asked haha
