Canon 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS

I've tried my friend's 70-200mm f/4 L USM a few days ago. My friend and I both agreed that the 18-200mm focus pretty well and fast for a micro motor implementation.

Of course the USM is faster and quieter, no doubt about it.

But considering the price vs performance, the 18-200mm is really good. If the AF on 70-200mm f/4 L USM is 10.0 (rating of 1-10) for speed, I would say the AF on 18-200mm is approximately 7.0-8.0 (tested mainly at Focal Length 200mm). For moving object, try to use AI servo. I'm using mainly AI servo on my 500D with good results.

i had both copy of 18-200 & 70-200 f4 non IS, some of the shots 18-200 stand up becos of the IS. otherwise, rating the photos 8/10 is pretty fair btwn 18-200 vs 70-200 f4 non IS.

for the convenient to have 18-200 on a single lens, there is nothing else to beat.

i had tried selling the 18-200, but there is no taker at all...funny!

Shouldn't you have used similar apertures for comparison of the lenses?

under the same light condition, while using the 18-200, the apertures stay at f5.6, can't bring down. while the L lens stay at f4.

I know that. Then set the aperture of the L lens to be 5.6 for a more effective comparison?

never thought of that...;P cant do that already...sold the L-lens...but beside the brightness issue, i'm trying to show the sharpness.

Tried water droplet photography yesterday with 18-200. Modified the white balance in DPP to make it more blue.

Great shots..

Was the shots taken with or without flash?

Thanks :) The shots were taken with a remote flash illuminating the background. Not too difficult to setup but lots of fun :gbounce:

Bernice's Portraits and Poses III (Bridesmaid Theme)

Did an outdoor test shot using the focal length (80mm) and F5.0 taken in ISO 200, to see the bokeh effect of this lens. Have used an external flash (diffused) to increase the "catchlights" in Bernice's beautiful eyes.

The EXIF details can be found in the photo.

Hi,
would you recommend i get a faster zoom lens like the Tamron 2875 by selling my Canon 18200 or get an external flash, like the 580 EXII? Both are around the same price new, give or take a hundred dollars?
I'm using a 1.6x crop body.

I think it would be hard for anyone to answer this question unless we don't know what you are shooting. :dunno:

The 18-200 is good because it cover 80% of most ranges that everyone is shooting. Getting the 2875 on a 1.6 crop body would means that you would lose some of your wide angle shots in the expense of a F2.8 aperture. Penny of thoughts?

Serene's Portraits and Poses

Did an outdoor action test-shot using the focal length (40mm) and shutter speed of 1/250 taken in ISO 200, to test the Auto Focusing of this lens. Have used an external flash (diffused) to freeze the Serene's hair for this effect.

need to learn from the expert here for this lens.. =)

Hey Anson have you tried the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6? I was wondering which lens has better optics...

Beautiful photos, enjoy every single of them. I am using the same lens as you and used it mainly for airliners photography, pretty happy with the results! But I have to get a longer range lens to able to take up upclose shots! Nevertheless, this is a great lens, an alternative to L lens which cost much more and of course better quality.

Thanks, but I don't think I am an expert of this lens. IMHO currently I have only utilised less than 30% of it's full potential.

Compared the IQ for this two lens is very subjective: http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4885448&postcount=28

Thanks for viewing. I agree that this lens is not L lens quality (both in built & focusing). But it also does not bear the heavy price tag too.

exposure program? can advise on wads tat.. newbie here as well

This lens worked pretty well for me too. Focussing is faster and there is also less hunting at max tele compared to the Sigma 18-250 OS.
