Canon 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS

Yes I am using ETTL II with compensation.

Curious... this thread is meant for Canon 18-200mm. May I know why you post a photo using the Canon 55-250mm without any other description or comment? :dunno:

there is no thread just for that lens .. thought it may be good to see how this lens fared to the 18-200mm

Well, you could start a new thread for 55-250mm len. I guess it is always good to have more people sharing their experience with different lenses ;)

If you are comparing the two lens, you should use both lens in the same location & condition. Posting a random photo taken by another lens would not be benefit to this thread discussion.

As the TS for this thread, I don't mind other sharing their experience & photos (taken by the Canon 18-200mm). However if the photo is taken by another lens, and it does not contribute to the discussion I would suggest that you start a new thread with your test photo taken by the lens. Agree?

To not confuse others that it is taken by the Canon 18-200mm lens, appreciate if you could remove your posted photo. Thank you. :)

deleted the photo as advised

hi, thanks for sharing the photos. Do you have issue on slow or indecisive focusing, especially for long range or fast moving object?

Depends on the lighting condition, generally focusing is very fast (not as fast as USM). For fast moving object, I general use "AI Servo".... hope it helps... :)

I've tried my friend's 70-200mm f/4 L USM a few days ago. My friend and I both agreed that the 18-200mm focus pretty well and fast for a micro motor implementation.

Of course the USM is faster and quieter, no doubt about it.

But considering the price vs performance, the 18-200mm is really good. If the AF on 70-200mm f/4 L USM is 10.0 (rating of 1-10) for speed, I would say the AF on 18-200mm is approximately 7.0-8.0 (tested mainly at Focal Length 200mm). For moving object, try to use AI servo. I'm using mainly AI servo on my 500D with good results.

Did a few indoor shots using the min focal length (18mm) and F3.5 taken in ISO 400. There is a couple "spotlight" above the gals and my 580EX2 is pointing up with a diffuser dome (just to get the catchlights on the eyes).

The purpose of this test shot is to see how mixed light condition much color cast & lens flaring affect the IQ of the lens. The EXIF details can be found in the photos.

Did an outdoor test shot using the focal length (28mm) and F4.0 taken in ISO 200, to minimize the barrel distortion issue while maintaining the sharpness of this lens. The EXIF details can be found in the photo.

sorry ... i was thinking about canon 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM.
its a canon 18-200mm IS ;)

Noticed that there are quite a few people on the forum purchasing the 18-200mm lens from 500D Kit II and almost immediately selling off the lens @ approx $850-1000. Of course, they will not be making any losses as the Kit II street price will be around $1850-$1950, meaning they get the 500D body for approx $1000.

Personally, I'm not against this practice. In fact, I will probably do the same thing when I'm ready to upgrade my camera body :). However, I would like to suggest a better (win-win) way of getting a good price and creating less negative (and false) impression of the 18-200mm lens.

Instead of purchasing the 500D Kit II first and then advertising to sell the 18-200mm lens, may I humbly suggest that you advertise the fact that you would like to sell the lens BEFORE you purchase the Kit II. When you've found the buyer of the lens, both of you can proceed to purchase the lens and body together. In this way, the buyer of the lens will know that they are getting a brand new lens and they will most probably be willing to pay a higher price for it. In the end, you get a better price for the lens while the buyer will also be happier with a brand new lens with un-registered warranty, win-win isn't it?

I believe there are also a lot of people selling off the 24-105 f4L lens from the 5DmkII kit for a similar reason.

Hi guys.
Currently i have a 28-135 on my 50d but feel that the wide angle not enough.
should i sell this to get the 18-200????

think i bought a wrong lens when i got my camera

Maybe ask yourself if 18mm is also wide enough for you? Keep in mind that there are other lenses that allow you to get wider, if you need.

Tried water droplet photography yesterday with 18-200. Modified the white balance in DPP to make it more blue.
